https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2023/09/06/president-biden-flaunts-not-wearing-mask-after-covid-19-exposure/70778723007/ posted:

President Joe Biden joked about not wearing a mask Wednesday following this week's positive COVID-19 test of his wife, first lady Jill Biden, sending mixed signals as White House officials insist the president is following CDC guidelines.

Biden walked into the White House State Dining Room holding − not wearing − a face mask before delivering remarks to a room of reporters, White House aides and stakeholders on a new contract between unions and shipping companies in West Coast ports.

"Let me explain to the press: I've been tested again today. I'm clear across the board," Biden said as he got underway, holding up a black face mask. "But they keep telling me, because this has to be 10 days or something, I've got to keep wearing it. But don't tell them I didn't have it on when I walked in."

After Biden spoke for about 10 minutes, the president left the room with his mask still in his hand, not over his face.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises individuals who were in close contact with someone infected with COVID wear a high-quality mask when indoors and around others for 10 days, in addition to regular testing and monitoring for symptoms.

[…]

But his public appearance without a mask contradicted White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who minutes earlier said Biden "is going to be masking in this 10-day period" in accordance with CDC recommendations.

[…]

"The president's going to continue to following CDC guidance," Jean-Pierre said of his interactions with world leaders at the summit. "That includes masking. That includes testing."

Biden's nonchalant attitude on masks Wednesday seemed a far cry from his COVID approach during the first two years in the White House, when he strictly followed CDC advice on masks. Much has changed, however, since the lockdowns that dominated the beginning of the pandemic, and much of the country retired their masks long ago.

they mention that most of the guys don’t use masks, or if they use masks they’re dust masks which aren’t good enough

seems like wearing better masks and keeping particulates out of the air would keep them alive. if only there was an agency with the power to enforce them at work…

Paxlovid is legitimately a miracle drug.

3-4 hours after my first dose, my symptoms were essentially gone. I'm about to take my third dose and I feel fine, just the tiniest bit of mucus in the upper throat but no congestion, no cough, no fever.

WTF?
:britain: Some potentially important Paxlovid news for UK residents in this article, which is mainly about how UK politicians managed to ruin a perfectly functional system.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/sep/24/changes-to-covid-treatment-system-in-england-could-lead-to-postcode-lottery posted:

Changes to Covid treatment system in England ‘could lead to postcode lottery’
Patients have been left confused and frustrated with no centralised system for obtaining medicines

Changes to the way Covid treatments are obtained by those most at risk from the disease could lead to a “postcode lottery” for access, experts have said, with charities warning patients have been left confused and frustrated by the new system.

Previously, people eligible for Covid treatments in England were contacted by their local Covid Medicines Delivery Unit (CMDU) once they reported testing positive for the virus.

But in late June the system changed, with arrangements for prescribing Covid medications, which include antivirals and neutralising monoclonal antibodies, devolved to the 42 NHS integrated care boards (ICBs) in England.

Patients were informed that if they tested positive they should contact their GP practice, NHS 111 or a specialist. However some ICBs have a different procedure, for example requesting that patients contact their local CMDU.

Now experts have warned the shift is leaving eligible patients struggling to get hold of Covid treatments.

“Nurses on the British Liver Trust helpline regularly receive calls from people with a liver condition who find themselves in a state of uncertainty regarding their eligibility for antiviral treatment,” sad Pamela Healy, chief executive of the British Liver Trust. “The callers often express frustration and confusion, as they have not been adequately informed about whether they qualify for such treatment or how to go about accessing it.”

Azeem Majeed, a professor of primary care and public health at Imperial College London, added that the new system puts the onus on eligible patients to work out how to get hold of the medications.
(..)
The concerns come amid a delay to new guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) that is poised to expand the pool of adults eligible for the nirmatrelvir plus ritonavir antiviral treatment to include all those aged 70 and over, as well as people with a body mass index of 35 or above, people with diabetes, and people with heart failure – should they have Covid and do not need supplemental oxygen.

However despite confirming there is no stock or supply issue around the drugs, NHS England has asked for a delay, citing “operational implications” which it says were not fully considered in the appraisal.

The political and bureaucratic apparatus in this country appears to be a corpse to superficial inspection but some folks at OSHA looked at COVID and were like "drat, this is a workplace hazard" and wrote a bunch of draft rules about mitigating it that leaked onto the internet in April 2021. Rules that, if they were put into force, would have made employers liable for people getting injured by COVID if they contracted it on the job and the employer was found to not be following the rules on things like air quality control. Plus the precedent that if those rules were strengthened later, people would have to comply or face regulatory action or lawsuits.

That dead-rear end could not be allowed to happen. The biden admin ripping their masks off in June 2021 and saying covid is over, mild, and fine, even as Delta was ripping through India so badly they ran out of wood for the funerary pyres in Delhi was the direct reaction of the entrenched neoliberal elites to a state bureaucracy that isn't fully captured trying to do its job. You want to try to protect people from a disease? gently caress you, we'll re-invent reality and disappear the disease entirely. That was the response. OSHA leadership scrapped almost the entirety of the draft rules and the rest is history.

even unvaccinated, I'm having trouble finding recommendations for adults to get two doses.

kids 6mo to 4 years are supposed to have at least 3 doses, so they recommend to keep taking the 2023-24 booster 2 months apart until they get there
