Luddite doesn't need to be "reclaimed" lol, it already is. Just ask how their ape and crypto investments are doing and the tech utopianists will scuttle back into the dark and miasmic corners and forgotten places. The future belongs to people who will say "it doesn't matter what we do if we're still pulling more oil out of the ground every year" and the future is grim indeed

From experience, that's not at all what happens, lol. It's an uphill battle to convince a steady stream of morons that your project doesn't need 'AI' or 'blockchain'. I wish I primarily lived on twitter were rationing someone meant you won the debate, and you can only ever see how your online pals dunk on ape avatars and Elnor Snusk. Meanwhile, the only people who self-identify as Luddites in real life are equally deranged cretins who think that cooking on an induction stove is gay.

The only Twitter I have is an account that just has some favorited tweets, social media is the leaded gasoline of our generation and chiding people for being too online as a default defensive stance isn't the slam dunk strategy you think. If you have to field those questions and can't just tell them to gently caress off it isn't your project. Thinking a gas stove is better than induction because it's old or whatever isn't being a Luddite lol

Then I have no idea why you would think tech bros have already lost the battle for hearts and minds. It is simply not the case.

Regardless of what definition of Luddite is 'correct', it's pointless to self-identify as one. Which is evidenced by how people who self-identify as Luddites are tremendously dumb. Techno sceptic is a better moniker when voicing opposition to techno utopism anyway, as it encompasses a much wider set of concerns than the original Luddism.

I'm not a skeptic tho, I've got a very good idea of how these things work and I oppose any technology that will cause more immiseration than it "solves." If you want to waste your life supporting reforms to soften these impacts or whatever, great, I'll be happy to support "advancements" once a comprehensive welfare state is in place and I've deemed it sufficient, but not a second sooner. If I were skeptical I'd be open to the belief that there's some new fact or argument that would change my mind. I am not. I used to be, but I got tired of having my time wasted.

Tech bros are "winning" because hearts and minds don't factor into anything at all, that's only trotted out when something good needs to be stopped. The only thing that matters is money and a great way to make more is to crush wages and create a huge pool of desperate people, something technology has proven to be incredibly good at and thus we find it deployed to this purpose. If you find yourself beset by morons everywhere you look, stand somewhere else.

BonHair

If you first have to explain some hundred year old historical context and propaganda for people to understand, maybe your label isn't particularly useful. Especially if instead you can just say "I think capitalism sucks and a lot of technology is helping capitalists". It's like debating whether USA is a democracy or a republic, pointless words that could be replaced with talking about why USA sucks.

Now, if someone calls you a luddite, feel free to agree and briefly tell the story. And then seize the means of production or whatever

Nope the small pharma startup I worked at was 100% venture capital then IPO/shareholder $. The only subsidy would have been a small grant to the scientists at a university lab that figured out how heart muscle works before the same scientists pitched it to venture capitalists.

Those scientists are now multi millionaires, the drug was approved which is hella rare. But the workers in their labs at that uni doing the pre drug development biology work never saw a dime.

Not all the science happened at the uni though. Most of the papers were authored and published by the private pharma company scientists after venture capital got involved. They ramped up the science 100x

"My small startup took no government subsidies" says man drinking from the money printer firehose.

lol.

Like I said, every part of it is 100% subsidized by the government. The only money they spend is on marketing and bribes then they just get trillions in profit. Cool system.

oh it's not a government subsidy because they gave billions to a group of rich white "investors" via one of the dozens of ways to pump money into the top of the pyramid and then that literally free money was given to your startup

also if whatever you do works more billions of free government money will be used by one of the big pharma corps to buy you up and thus make the vulture capitalists who "funded" you with fed money even richer.

this system of funding research indirectly by handing out negative-interest loans to anyone who claims they're worth at least a bil and enormous subsidies for buying out proven designs is vastly superior to the government just paying people to do research directly because it's not government interference in the free market

The difference is that government funding is done by using MY MONEY that the IRS stole, whereas venture capital is good, well deserved surplus value extracted from Legitimate Sources.
