Even well known games like the original Unreal have some gems hidden in them, like this track that only plays in a 30-second cutscene in the expansion pack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4Tyd8SaZZM Bloody Pom fucked around with this message at 01:06 on Sep 26, 2023 |

All of the leads I could find were dead, including on archive.org, and all I could guess in the end is that it's from a fan-made Speccy remake of an ancient arcade game named Deviants that added this completely original track as BGM where the arcade version only had silence. I couldn't find anything about the artist, and checking it again today shows that the only website that catalogued anything about said Speccy remake, retrospec.sgn.net, has basically shut down. That Mod Archive page is the only evidence this rad song has ever existed, same with countless other orphaned songs. Honestly actually playing the game sounds like more than I gathered Valve actually did in terms of testing new games.

Imo they should focus more on the content that's only accessible by console command after getting stuck in the tutorial and less on the first-person sequence in which you're sexually assaulted by an alien

mycot posted:If they were just playing the game wrong surely they could just give them the answer instead of telling them to open console commands? Is this what PC gaming does to a mfer? Eh I've worked in QA and you almost never have perfect access to explain stuff between disparate companies and with this it sounds like contact isn't an immediate thing, like an email chain with hours/days between responses rather than instant message like a slack or discord or whatever so trying to explain and anticipate any follow up questions might have impeded matters. You can send a screenshot, a video, do a screenshare of you completing the thing to show them exactly how it's done or whatever obviously, if that's allowed/they have whatever transference method available for a video ready and waiting, etc. So for example, the note might have just been "tutorial is uncompletable" and that could run the gammut from "it is actually hosed" to "we got halfway through it then didn't read a prompt properly and so couldn't continue it" to "we finished it but you have to press a button on a wall on the side of the room after you finish and it's not amazingly signposted" and loads of edge cases in between so they just said "look you can do x, y and z to get out of the tutorial (that being completing it properly and then like, selecting a terminal or whatever and the Valve testers just missed it, very possible depending on how overworked and quick to say "ok this is hosed, move on to the next thing" they are) or you can use this console command and trust us that it works the proper way too". Like clearly valve oks broken poo poo all the time so I find it hard to believe they are rigorously testing every game the way I've been familiar with doing, this seems unusual based on what I've heard Steams process being is all I'm saying. The way I've heard it is that their certification process was more a formality that mainly checks for truly malicious stuff and out and out scams and companies were expected to have done their own QA in whatever capacity for any real work in that regard but obviously from this things have changed or they just always did a bit more than I'd been lead to believe. Also, just to clarify, I'm not trying to carry water for the devs, the entire rest of that statement is very weird, as Impatom says, "other devs try to make their sexual assault scenes too sexy" is an odd statement, I've clearly not been playing the same games that dev has. Usually I'd say they use sexual assault to try and be edgy/shocking which is gratuitous but in a different way I guess. Either way, a very weird statement. I just wanted to say the first reason for the game being rejected might not be a case of the devs being bad specifically, they just might have made a poorly explained tutorial or whatever, or yeah they could have just hosed up and made an actively broken tutorial as well of course. thebardyspoon fucked around with this message at 19:53 on Sep 26, 2023 |

I'm not familiar with Valve's verification process but if "Yeah this bit is kind of confusing/not signposted properly" is actually an approval failing issue it seems like that would come up all the time for a huge number of games? Maybe they're just leaving things out but the dev's story is very strange.

"rape is a motivation in our hero's journey" is such garbage writing that I wish Valve actually DID reject games for that poo poo but yeah, valve only cares that your poo poo can open and close, and isn't a virus. they don't care about sexual content in games until people complain loudly enough about a specific game this dev is being sketchy about their explanation and they're also shittalking at the DUSK developer so idk. i don't like the vibes going on here e: when asked why they're crunching so much when they can just delay their response is, "this is just how it is, shut up" https://twitter.com/FortunesRun/status/1706729464275595459 The 7th Guest fucked around with this message at 19:59 on Sep 26, 2023 |

the devs seem like morons but stuff gets denied from steam for completely random minutiae all the time. it seems like the amount of effort put into researching it and the reasons you might get denied are just completely random based on which individual is reviewing your game, outside of 'literally does not launch.' for instance there are dozens of games on steam so broken you need to noclip out of the tutorial.

Yeah, but that's just a failure of Steam's verification process to do its job, not an indication that they're OK with games that can't get past the tutorial without using cheats. I'm more interested in what their actual feedback to the devs on why they're getting denied is. Right now we're getting the dev's version of things which is really loving weird, but I'm also wondering how reliable a source they are.
