Finished ZZ. Didn’t like it much by the end. Just ran out of interest in the characters, can’t put my finger on why. The shounen pandering was way heavier in this series than others I’ve seen as well; in terms of how women are treated, the deluge of unique enemy mechs, and zeta zeta being a voltron. I did like the more irreverent tone and humor and there were some fun memorable moments for sure. Just not high (at the bottom) on my list of Gundam series seen so far. the mobile suit breakdown discourse also reminded me that when they started on ZZ, they brought up some interviews with the staff behind it, which was very enlightening as to why the massive tone shift. everyone said they were getting tired of grim and intense anime aimed at adult fans, and sincerely felt like anime should return to fun kids shows. also given how the last stretch of zeta is, you can understand wanting a break

The prime demographic for SEED and Destiny when they first aired is well into the 'establishing their careers' phase, assuming they didn't get their knees broken by global economics. There's a better than even chance that the teams working on the movie have at least a few members who watched the original as teenagers.

The only parts I can think of that are truly messy are the Ple deaths, which don’t have the weight and aftershocks of other character deaths. Edit: oh wait whoops I forgot the Leina thing lol

I completely understand that it’s a product of the times and culture, and that it was made to cater/pander to a very specific audience. Those aspects of it just haven’t aged well and brought down my enjoyment.

I just can't get over the new Seed character designs. Jodhpurs and insane proportions? The leader(?) character looks like someone watched The Neverending Story and got inspired but in a bad way. You could get better results with one of those doll maker sites. I too am a big fan of Mashmyre. Dude is just charmingly deluded and doesn't go hard core creep like Glemmy. Glemmy sucks and I'm glad he dies.

Shiro has the eject button smashed on his story and ends up floundering the rest of the series, getting cucked by a fascist, and then ending up in the exact same place he was and still lusting after a woman who betrayed him. Totally incompetent I purposefully didn't rank Hathaway until his movies are all out, and forgot Banana existed. He'd be next to Shiro tho
