That's a movie I kinda liked when I was 17. Not sure if it's really worth a rewatch? I was randomly crazy about the movie Sheitan too (I guess Vincent Cassel has a lot of weird charisma), and a teen worshipper of Gaspar Noe.
Not too long ago I watched another abhorrent film that was a favorite of Noe's apparently, Angst (1983). It's one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen, in that same sort of "transgression by pushing the boundaries of decency" space, no wonder it's one of Gaspar's faves. It's truly sick, it had me shook, and the fact that it was directed with incredible style just made the experience all the more worse and complicit. I would call it in the top 10 all time horror when it comes to its camerawork imo, but maybe I'm just too old because i found it also a nauseating and evil film. It is an incredibly unpleasant cinematic experience, but the more that I type the more I realize that this description might actually appeal to some people.

There are people on letterboxd who have it on their favorites list and if I were president I'd have all of those users watched very very carefully

It's been probably 15 years since I've watched Man Bites Dog, but I distinctly remember it being a comedy, was that not the case?

Either way, I'm glad it seems like the community has lost interest in "R U mad at how shocking I am bro?" movies. A Serbian Film never happened, it's fake, so no, I'm not upset, I'm just annoyed by how much space it took up for a while. A film like Henry is shocking and disturbing, but it has a point.

It can be classified as a dark comedy or horror comedy. It definitely tries to make jokes and say things but it's also just a very hosed up serial killer movie.

We shall dive down through black abysses... and in that lair of the Deep Ones we shall dwell amidst wonder and glory forever.

There are legit a couple of funny things in it, but they do not support that length. It’s just kind of a miserable watch, and not the fun kind of miserable.

Once the shock value wears off you’re just kind of forced to sit uncomfortably until it stops. It feels like going to the dentist.

What are some good deep sea horror movies?

Leviathan (good)
Underwater (good ++)
Deep Star Six (haven't seen)
Jaws 3 I guess (nah)

Movies where people are deep underwater and would get crushed/drowned if they went outside, and that is a plot device

Space horror is similar but I'm looking for water

The Rift (on TUBI)
Deep Blue Sea (kinda)
The Abyss (another obvious suggestion like Deep Blue Sea and not really a horror movie, but if you haven't yet seen it this has a terrifically realized underwater setting and some killer suspense sequences)

Wild that there just hasn't been any legal way to watch it apart from buying decade+ year old DVDs forever. They're only now playing a first 4K remaster at film festivals. They should had that thing ready and up on Disney+ to coincide with Way of Water's release.

Also, the theatrical cut is the superior version by a wide margin.

Never underestimate a studio's ability to make incredibly stupid decisions. It's like someone suggests the most common sense option that even a toddler could understand, and they do the complete opposite. Case in point, rather than release Haunted Mansion in October, release it in summer where it has to compete against Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Apart from the 24/7 channel my partner and I have a double feature every week, and of course in October we stick with horror and adjacent. We've planned our Fridays out for the month and I'm stoked. Our first week will be Hellraiser IV and Petey Wheatstraw, since we've been watching a new Hellraiser movie every year. First year was 2, which we loved, then 3 which was extremely funny but not a good Hellraiser, and last year was the new Hulu one, which I was...not fond of. I know they only get worse from here and I'm looking forward to this new tradition. :getin:

No One Will Save You wasn't quite the horror movie I previously thought Nope was gonna be, but it was an anxious good time.

I kinda wish we hadn't found out what happened with Maude, that made Brynn so hated? The almost complete lack of dialogue made me feel very much like an outsider and I think it would've been neat to just leave it up to the audience to figure out for themselves. But I guess then you wouldn't really be zble to tie things together at the end.

Very fun ideas, though I'd still like to see a 90s style alien abduction horror that's less generous with showing the greys.

Worth noting that a huge portion of the water effects shots and diving scenes in Underwater are practical, and Kristen Stewart is terrified of the water

She signed on thinking the movie was gonna be CGI like Aquaman, but toughed the shoot out, even when sets broke up and a malfunctioning dive suit injured her arm.

(Thankfully the director doesn't seem to be nearly as big of an a-hole on set as Jim Cameron was on the Abyss, enough that Ed Harris straight up decked him after nearly drowning)

Michael Gambon has passed away at 82. For those looking for a unique Horror-adjacent film to slide into their October challenge I cannot recommend The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, And Her Lover enough. Shithead Miller in Underwater is a lot more tolerable than Shithead Miller in Cloverfield. Until I rewatched it recently I forgot how much Shithead Miller is in Cloverfield. You don't see him on camera much but he's doing dipshit commentary the whole way through.

I usually just set up everything I haven't watched in front of my TV and then randomly pick from there.

I tried to specifically plan each movie out one year, but it didn't feel as fun, and I like to have friends over and let them choose so they feel like they're involved.

I dig into the ol' watchlist for horror movies, usually retro, and throw a few rewatches of old favs in the mix too. Definitely going on some whims and flights of fancy. And I try to mix in some B-movies that might be funny to write about too.
