I imagine this thread probably has heard of this already but in case you haven't: For the people here who were maximally horny for Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander once upon a time there is a free, open source game called Beyond All Reason that is one gushing love letter to those games. It's pretty good. I have sent hundreds if not thousands of robots to their doom.

LordSloth posted:Tangent; anybody remember the story of Haegemonia: Legions of Iron? As much as I liked the game, that was some the most laughably bad characterization I can recall. I only ever played Skirimish mode, what was so bad about the story?

My own issues with it were that almost none of the characters felt like they properly lived in the world of the game. Exactly who was responsible for what was happening was difficult to tell, as it too often was left to the player to figure out how to trigger the next event of the script, instead of having it follow logically from the story. Thus you had characters saying they were doing something but they were so interchangeable (and often ineffectual) that you couldn't get a feel for them. It was also a campaign with shifting loyalties but any supposed tension that might have arisen from that seemed to be wasted. On top if it all there was the fact that the writing wasn't great English, and some lines would even be in other languages. (Again, this could have been intentional to highlight the cosmopolitan nature of the group, but it just as easily was a translation mistake). Looking at the notes I made when I played it, this was my thought about the story: "...it breaks if you don’t do what it wants, and it rarely tells you what it wants." e: Also forgot to mention one of the biggest problems of the gameplay, which is that genociding planets is simply something everybody does with regularity, and it's not regarded as anything worse than normal combat losses. Seems like the T3 Arm stuff just gets wrecked. And do enemy AI use nukes? My ally AI were slinging nukes left and right but never seen an enemy one.

appropriatemetaphor posted:Hell yeah game owns. Pound for pound, Cortex has the stronger T3 units. For Armada, you can mass Marauders much faster and use them to run by and inflict critical damage before Cortex can start snowballing their slow, expensive T3. If it get to an all-out brawl, Thors are quite tanky, and can front line for the powerful Armada T2 support units like Sharpshooters or Starlights. Use the constant threat of your Marauders on flanking attacks into the economy to keep pressure. But on a more fundamental level, this game is all about eco. If your eco is bigger than your opponents, then you will win even with far worse units. See pawn/tick spam.

What's a good Armada T2 bot to mass build? For Cortex, spamming Sheldon and Fiend combo seems to work well. Good range and can run away if things are going bad. For Armada the hound is kind of similar, but their equivalent to fiend is way slower, webber perhaps?

Love Stole the Day posted:(Re: Beyond All Reason) Well, seeing as the Spring Engine began as a Total Annihilation remake that makes sense. If you didnt come up with RTS games like Warcraft 2 or Command & Conquer, its sorta hard to explain the appeal of Total Annihilation (and why TA:Spring and Supreme Commander missed the mark). IMO the big unique things about TA: - the game engine is vector/3rd rendered and not bitmapped - gun lighting effects, accurate wreckage, destructable terrain in 1997 - the game world is 100% persistent - i.e. ten robots = ten wrecked carcasses' to navigate past or salvage for metal - resources are unlimited - troops (except the Commander) are highly expendable - building your economy is more important than building your army - you can queue up factorio-levels of building and production

Radar being an actual thing with actual considerations and counterplay really added to the range stuff. Instead of just a building so you get a minimap like in c&c. Like people using scout planes both as chaff and as ruses to make a force seem larger on the radar than it was.

Base defenses having teeth was also rare for the genre then. In TA you could set up firebases like that and they wouldn't crumble to the first artillery unit that ambled into range, unlike everything else on the market. T2 artillery defenses had comparable range to anything mobile, even battleships! It took concentrated firepower and some sacrifice to punch into a defense line and man it felt good on both sides of it. You could SimCity a bit and it wasn't a waste of resources. Although I happily abused Big Berthas in the final ARM mission. They could kill all but a very few CORE units and I could sit behind a wall of turrets and giggle at CORE counterattacks kerploding. The final CORE mission had a terrain wall that Intimidators couldn't shoot over so I had to go in the hard way there which ultimately lost me my entire attack force and I had to stop a dedicated ARM counterattack with stockpiled artillery units which hadn't come out of the factory fast enough for my young tastes. I really wish Purple War had caught on. That game had a lot of potential, but they didn't have enough marketing to keep the money and engagement coming in. At least we have Iron Harvest! That game holds up really well.

Purple War just seemed like a blatant SC2 clone with War3 graphics when I tried it. Even one of the few demo maps was very obviously Lost Temple. I didn't really see anything that would pull SC2 players away from a much more popular and feature rich game.

TA:K was the first TA game I played, and only for quite some time. So it holds a special place in my heart. You could resurrect other factions builders and get access to their entire tech tree! That was pretty cool! I mean yeah you could swipe a construction yard with engineers too, but the factions were a lot more varied than GDI/NOD

There's mineral lines, the units have that Starcraft wobble move, there's a supply cap that looks like it goes to 200, active units have a portrait in their stat window. The biggest differences I see are vespene replaced with 2 more kinds of mineral lines, space vs ground terrain, and the power system. Clone might be a stretch, but it is closer to Starcraft than even Age of Empires, and closer to both than anything else in the wider RTS space.

Needless to say I'm looking forward to the full release of this, I enjoyed Armello and that game seemed to have a decent public multiplayer community for drop in games.
