The Perfect Element posted:There was definitely a lot of hope. That election night ended up being one of the worst of my life; not just defeat, but utter annihilation. John McDonnell having to keep it together on live TV as the exit poll came in... Man. I've never had my dreams just crushed like that before. Same. Throughout most of 2019 I didn't actually think that Labour had a chance of getting into power - the media hit-job on Corbyn, the charisma and adulation of Johnson and the self-interest of loads of people would see to that. I thought it would be a 'hold your ground' result in comparison to 2017. Then when the 2nd referendum policy was firmed up I was sure it was going to be a real thumping - however sensible and logical it was a policy guaranteed to piss of a lot of people on both sides of the issue (thanks Keith!). But, living in Peterborough, the by-election in June (not my constituency) did spark some genuine hope that things might pan out OK - that the pundits and polls were wrong, that the political landscape was too tumultuous to really predict. When this place - a highly Brexit-y and gammon-city - can vote in a Labour MP at the height of the media pushing the antisemitism/Britain-hater angle on Corbyn, after all the Brexit shenanigans and after the last Labour MP was recalled after being convicted of perverting the course of justice...maybe something could happen. I distinctly remember going out that evening to pick up a takeaway, walking through the park and thinking "maybe this time tomorrow, it'll all be a little bit better and the start of something big." Well, it wasn't. Unknowingly, it was the first time I've watched GE coverage with an emotional rather than a merely intellectual investment and it really was like being punched in the gut. I watched the exit poll and almost immediately went to bed. Horrible. Not helped by waking up later, going down to get a drink, flicking the telly on and seeing/hearing Alan Johnson giving that smug speech that was soon being plastered all over facebook by everyone's Tory uncle.

For every young person I knew in 2019 who was feeling invested in politics by Corbyn’s labour I seemingly knew an equal number of thick cunts who intended to vote Tory for ‘the bants’ because it would be funny to see the silly clown man in charge of the country.

Bobbing up again with the latest on Camrath. His funeral is this Saturday, 7 October. His wife has asked, quote, "Could you ask the goons if they'd do some more bluescreen H fudge meme photos please?" Consider yourselves asked. Your very finest for this fine man. While posting, I found this a few days ago; a poem I wrote for him two years ago. I wasn't originally going to put this in my imminent poetry collection, but now, it's going to be the last one. RIDING THE ZEITGEIST SINCE 2003 Today it pleased me, friend, to note Our friendship's reached the age to vote, Can buy a whiskey or a beer, For it has reached its eighteenth year. It soon, absent unomened strife, Will have been with you half your life. Online, on stage, on boats, in cars On Boston streets, in hotel bars, We've done such deeds and seen such things, Have lived like paupers and like kings. I think it fit that I confide It's been a wild and joyous ride With miles and years before its end. Here's to the next eighteen, my friend. ENVOI How on this friendship have I lucked? Simple: because we've never hosed.

Don't forget Liz Truss was elected leader by Tory party members. What dethroned her was the stock and financial markets response to her swinging tax cuts pushed a bunch of Tories that hadn't nominated her pushing her out in defiance of the members vote. It's essentially what we all feared would happen if Corbyn had won narrowly in 2017, except in reverse of the PM being too right wing rather than left, and the consequential less media savaging. Liz Truss is an idiot, but she's an idiot with a single idea she believes in defiance to the facts. Sunak is just a empty suit with no ideas beyond looking at a budget spreadsheet, and the recent incoherent vote begging.

It's a bunch of guys who inherited a lot of money, have no economic sense because they inherited rather than earned, and just want to pay less tax regardless of the consequences. Don't look any deeper into it than that. The nice Truss lady will lower our taxes and it will definitely work this time, because don't worry about it.
