The best one for me was when FFVII Remake showed off Aerith, who was clearly in her twenties and could definitely not be misconstrued as a teenager, so someone immediately "improved" her design by giving her a perfectly round child face.

Absolutely the funniest part of the Baldur's Gate 3 release was the contingent of people whining on forums that 'all the women are ugly', that western game companies and cinema 'don't understand beauty', and specifically contrasted western RPGs/cinema with JRPGs and anime. This, in a game that featured multiple female romance interests clearly designed as nerd fantasies.

In the context of the recent posts it kinda feels like that said contingent has been trained by certain gross tropes to expect those tropes and view those tropes as ideals, to the point of wanting to punish anyone who moves away from them. When they move outside that comfort zone they get confused, angry, and start blaming the wokes. So its like anime companies are in a pervy hell of their own making?

Well pretty much yeah. Also the people in game looked totally fine just that they were uhhh..ADULTS.

Godammit you beat me to it. I remember there was a huge stink being raised about her face being too western that I thought was absolutely psychotic. Apparently they want her to look like a 9 year old or something.

Will again, always, recommend Monster. No anime tropes. A neurosurgeon tracks down a serial killer, lots of European politics and class criticism, a college-aged woman is the female protagonist and is never sexualized. Naoki Urasawa writes his women as people, not Female Characters.

And for the crying immortal boy in Pluto: That's Astroboy. Astroboy is a Frankenstein's monster to his dad, the kid has earned the right to cry. He's a good boy who gets treated as a little boy.

Also check out 20th Century Boys: Apocalypse, cults, and rock n' roll.

Holy gently caress, I love Naoki Urasawa. Read him if you hate anime tropes.

Franken Fran and I was actually referencing this chapter directly LOL. It's a horror manga with a pretty dark satirical bent. This from chapter 37 about an actress trying to make her big break by getting plastic surgery to look like an anime character. It's kind of one long deconstruction of how that kind of body would actually function. *spoilers* Not loving great.

there's plenty of good anime out there that is as close to caveat-free as you could hope for. watch barakamon, sakura quest, acca-13, bocchi the rock, a place further than the universe, get your hands off eizouken, sonny boy, chihayafuru, kaiji, mushishi, natsume's book of friends, and (for the sake of ex-Games mod Metis of the Hallways) revue starlight

i'm not saying these are all COMPLETELY caveat-free but you'll be fine

I've got a tween niece who loves anime, so when she came to town I took her to the local shop. loving yikes.

Which means that the debut season really drew a lot of attention, and now fans can look forward to the now in production second season.

i think the more interesting/fraught/evil politics of Gurren Lagann is that it's hard to ignore how much the struggle to be free of lordgenome and the population control/containment policies of the anti-spirals evoke Japan becoming a client-state and being forcibly demilitarized by the united states after the war.

Of course, japan-as-client-state is an absolutely horrendous status quo irl - look at the unaccountably abusive behavior of US servicemembers stationed in Japan - but it's also a powerful motivator for the same right-wing parties that push for remilitarization while denying imperial war crimes.

Just this season a few caveat-free anime series are going on, Like Frieren and Helck. So if you do want to watch something not made in the US.

Frieren is about an Elf that is living out her life after having gone on a 10 year journey to beat the demon king, and She's a basically immortal Elf and has to deal with people who aren't.

Helck is about a hero who abandons the human world to join with the demon world, and joins a trial to become the demon king. It starts slow and goofy, but once you get into the lore of the world it picks up.

I'm also pretty sure Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi) and Shangra-la Frontier are mostly Caveat Free as well, but they are very early on or not out yet. Dengeon Meshi should be good, but I think there might be some non-sexualized nudity. I don't think Shangra-la has anything in it, but there are a lot of jokes about the main character being a perv, since his outfit is a fake bird head and some modest briefs that he wears cause, like a true gamer, only the stats matter.

Continuing to work through my second viewing of Pantheon with a friend who's never seen it before. Still a great show.

I like that it's effectively a cyberpunk piece, but without many of the visual markers we typically associate with the genre. It's mostly not set in cities and instead spends a lot of time in small desert towns, the technology is contemporary-ish, the fashion is modern and the music is recent. The characters are a bit more typical, though they're also modulated to fit with the show's quotidian qualities e.g. highschool outcast Justine would absolutely be a heavy/merc in something a bit more traditional. When the show dips into its more genre heavy elements it mostly goes low horror or high fantasy, but it'll also do really cool things that play with its SFal qualities where it'll play with the bodies of its performers in ways live action can't achieve.

I appreciate that the performances are toned way down too, it fits what they're doing here -- there's a lot of character in the animation that you don't get with a lot of other productions, which means that the production doesn't have to lean on the voice actors to provide these exaggerated, stylised performances to substitute. Which, yeah, is good, since the series is about the physical and the body, and its attempting to generate a more grounded aesthetic in order to make its points. I reckon Taylor Schilling gives a particularly good, nuanced performances in her demented psychosexual drama, though she's playing by far the showiest character in the human cast.

(Though no one in the couch is a slouch; and this thing is WAY overcast, Lara Pulver turns up to deliver some news chyrons and gently caress off).

I mentioned music earlier. I love that they splurged for a big song or two every episode. It's a really big part of the show's vibe, and even though some of the choices are incredibly on the nose (for a while, that cover of "Don't Dream It's Over" was a very dark joke) it all really works for me.

I'm just gonna come out and say I absolutely do not hate all anime. And hell there's a lot of loving amazing ones even from "problematic" studios like Trigger; I loved Promare, I love Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, Trigun Stampede is amazing and so is the works of Miyazaki and Junji Ito. I can pick plenty of examples I like just fine however I'm not wrong when I say it's like picking seashells out from the beach. There's a lot of dross and I get tired when I think I found something good and it turns out the protagonist wants to gently caress his underage cousin or something. It's just a bummer it's like this. But that's why we talk about it here to recommend good stuff to each other. It's not all crap after all. Juuuust mostly Isekai.....

Like you might enjoy modern superhero blockbuster movies but there are a lot of reasons you wouldn't go into a comic book shop, you might enjoy the chris pine dungeons and dragons movie or warhammer space marine videogames but not want to go into a local nerd den miniatures and dice shop, etc.

There's a lot of stuff in US animation that is tasteless as well. Family Guy has Quagmire, Rick and Morty had that weird rear end incest season, and them there's all those old Looney Tunes cartoon from WWII. We just get it drowned out by the actual quality stuff and the Live Action shows, of which we never really see from Japan.

That said, some anime is awful and shouldn't have made it to air (looking at you Redo of Healer, which I have heard enough about to steer clear of). Someone who knows more can probably comment more on it, but I know some of the creepy sex stuff was a plan in someway pushed by their government to combat their declining birth rate. Which is really hosed up. It's sort of like how Florida is letting teachers show Prager U videos to classes.

I'm not 100% on the details, I'd just heard from multiple sources about it in non-joke ways.

Not trying to defend the creepy anime stuff. I wish there were more normal people into anime so we could get better opinions over what is good instead of seeing reviews from places that are so deep they've become at best numb to the caveats. I'd like to stop having people tell me I should watch Shield Hero or Jobless Reincarnation, and then just being like :dogstare: 5 or less episodes in.

That said I just finished Fionna and Cake and that show is really good. It starts slow, but kicks it into such a high gear at the end. I really wish more legacy shows would work like it did, adding and shaping context to the rest of the show. Feels like most of the rehashes end up either being only nostalgia bait or subversions. Also turning Ice King from an annoying villain into one of the best characters in the show is amazing, something I'd like to see more of, especially if the villain is just kind of goofy and not IDW Megatron levels of evil.
