They launch pirate raids for food or water every so often, and most of us let them get away with it because they’re from Frigid. Your fakes probably wouldn’t commit a whole battalion to wiping them out, so an extra lance might make a difference. If you can talk them into it.”

The locals arrived on, and live amidst, a WarShip that's going to just nail the drop ship with naval PPC fire in twelve seconds and afterwards you scramble to pick up the salvage and try to find a survivor from the attacking team ahead of local recovery crews that won't be taking prisoners.

It's like a backwards escort/rescue mission.

The map looks interesting. The defenders have a strong position, but there are also plenty of avenues for an attacker to approach. If the attackers do have a Fortress there might be artillery to watch out for. I assume the lines are roads buried in the snow?

Dragon’s Teeth 3-1

Ironhead’s Sentinel kicked up sparkling clouds of dry, icy powder with each footstep. The shimmer of airborne snowflakes rose like dust from a dirt road, marking her progress towards the site of the battle. By all accounts the locals had done well at first. They’d kept their heavier ‘Mechs hidden behind their emplacements and feigned that Port Afternoon was defended only by their lightest units: a Locust and a Stinger.

From what Ironhead could tell, the fake Star Leaguers had been so deceived by this show of force that their scout lance had engaged directly—and walked straight into the waiting guns of the locals’ heavier ‘Mechs: an ancient but still powerful BattleAxe, and an assault-weight FrankenMech that was probably still more Banshee than anything else.

Smoke rose from the wreckage of Lt. Bellaro’s BattleAxe; the fires that spread inside its chest worsened by the occasional minor detonation from whichever of its ammo bins hadn’t already fully gone up. A light ‘Mech was slumped on the firing step behind it, its figure unidentifiable amidst the fires that raged over its own surface. The false SLDF had paid a hefty price to take out Bellaro’s BattleAxe; but they’d still paid it—and a much heavier attack wave had caught the locals in the open as they’d been trying to run down the last remaining scout.

“It’s about time you showed up,” the self-proclaimed Colonel “Wendigo” Dohman criticized. “I was starting to think the Star League was going to leave us to our own devices.”

“We’d have been here sooner,” Prodigal’s tones were only slightly warmer than Frigid’s ever-blowing winds. “But you asked us to stay out of it. We’d have been glad to coordinate, you know that. Now we’re all playing catch-up.”

“What’s done is done,” Wendigo agreed, after a fashion. “Do what you came here to do; with my blessing. If it saves us, great. If it doesn’t, I’m sure we’ll find some way to curse you. And if you’ve been lying, I’ll drag you to hell along with me.”

“If we were lying, we’d have been here at the first, with or without your permission,” Syntyche replied. “But we didn’t spend two months freezing our fingers off just to watch you all die. I can’t imagine these fakes are zealots, if Port Afternoon’s too tough a nut to crack I’m sure they’ll run. And with luck, our reinforcements will be closer than theirs. Just remember, Colonel: we need captives if we’re going to convince the SLDF that something’s going on out here.”

“You can have the meat.” Wendigo agreed, “I want the metal. Small price to pay for getting you your intel, Lieutenant.”

“Let’s win this fight first,” Syntyche countered. “We can bargain over beer.”

At the risk of sounding very, very dumb. Allow me to ask which mech is my Mongoose? I assume the one at 1004. Also, do the dirt paths/roads mean anything or should they be treated as empty?

I'm having to warm up my Battletech brain again. It's been a while. I assume sprinting forward to immediately engage the enemy in front of me is a bad idea. But it's also a think I could do

Sprint (10mp) to 1012 facing 1113 (straight forward)
If sprint is disallowed, 0811 facing 0912 instead .

So it is!

1608 looks like a good spot for the Mongoose. Gives you a fair shot (9+) at the Falcon with your large laser, while keeping yourself out of its ideal range and obscuring yourself from the enemy Talos.

Walking the Hoplite to 1306 gives you an 8+ shot on the Falcon with the autocannon, while keeping out of its range entirely. This is a scenario where Theo's gunnery skill is going to be very useful.

I'll probably post up on one of the berms for a while, with my lovely movement profile, just sitting still in partial cover is almost certainly better than maneuvering around too much.

They're not paved with anything that would inconvenience a 'Mech, if there were any vehicles on the map they'd get the typical road speed boost.

I'm just gonna do as Bloody Pom suggested and park myself on 1608 for now. Puts the light mech in range of my large laser and gives me some flexibility in where I want to move next. I considered stopping in 1607 since that would be walking distance for me, but I really, really don't want to run the risk of getting sniped by unknown medium with the LRMs. I'm not sure if they would have line of sight or not but, better not to risk it

Dragon’s Teeth 3-2

The microsecond flash of Prodigal’s large laser was nearly lost to the glare Frigid’s snow. With his cockpit automatically filtering out the worst of the reflected ultraviolet light, Grandpa’s computer barely even needed to auto-tint to block the laser as well.

Not expecting an attack, the enemy light ‘Mech reeled as Prodigal blew a hole through its arm armor so large that nothing in any of the lance’s arsenal would fail to penetrate. Grandpa dropped his crosshairs and fired as well, but his autocannon slug missed wide. The little light ‘Mech was nearly as slender as an Ostscout. It would be a difficult target at all but the shortest of ranges.

Startled by the unexpected attack, the enemy Mechwarrior kicked their ‘Mech into reverse and backed into a copse of trees where they probably hoped they’d avoid further notice. It might have even worked, he mused to himself, as a pair of big medium ‘Mechs crested the ridgeline behind it. They looked similar to the ‘Mechs they’d faced on XR7715: Each brandished a heavy autocannon in one arm and missile racks over each shoulder. If they were keeping with the trends, each was probably packing Infernos—but at the same time, on a world as bitter cold as Frigid, just blasting or even kicking apart all the local shelters would probably be sufficient to effectively wipe out the frontier colony.

“I really wouldn’t say ‘no’ to a pulse laser or two to help handle the fast-movers,” Prodigal lamented.

“I’d settle for some jump jets, or a bigger autocannon,” Ironhead replied jovially—only to switch to pure business a moment later. “I’ve got eyes on the Colonel. Looks like he’s engaging an enemy—there’s no mistaking that, that’s a damned BattleMaster! … Just past the south ridge. They’re just trading blows for now; but I’d bet half my next paystub that BattleMaster’s going to eat that ugly FrankenMech alive.”
