went to a friend's place and an acquaintance I rarely see is here. she mentioned something about not being able to smell for a month and I was like wait what happened? and (of course) she said she got COVID 5w ago and lost her sense of smell and it hasn't come back. I happen to know her father is a doctor AND had prescribed her a *prophylactic!* paxlovid course in 2022 when her roommate got COVID. she never tested positive that time, so maybe it worked? anyway so I said, oh your dad didn't give you pax this time? and she said, no I took paxlovid last time and it suuuucked! so of course I said, does it suck more than losing your sense of smell? and she just shrugged and said yeah that's a good point ?????????????????? we are hopeless lol

I like how it didn't register as "oh good, COVID tests!", it registered as "oh good, the ghouls have spit in my face." Like sure, I'd rather have the tests than not have them, but how about we do something about stopping the spread of the deadly, disabling rapidly mutating vascular pathogen? Can we try that? That sure would be a lot more helpful than a one time gift of "not even enough tests to accurately determine if you're ok."

i genuinely hit the end of my rope burnout 2 months ago and now for the next two weeks i get to play the avoid covid game for the 3rd loving time because my parents have to live their best lives. that car drive home is probably what is gonna get me if i do get it. i replaced the filters on the corsicube, built a second unit, have fresh air cycling through open windows. i have the "works well under pressure/in a crisis" thing going for me but i'm not excited to see what that looks like at the end of this avoiding covid cycle when i'm already pretty much baseline ready to just find a ditch and go lay in it. Someone yelled at me from their car either “there’s no covid” or “there’s still covid?” Can’t work out if the increasing random hostility I’m getting is because of general people getting more aggro about covid obviously still being a problem or because I’m finally registering as girl to more people this year.

Aranet4's on sale for $168. Both from their website and through Amazon. I ordered through amazon since their website linked to it anyway, and it said shipped by Aranet, but it was actually shipped together with other amazon stuff by amazon, so they must be handling distribution entirely. I've not heard of any counterfeit Aranet's anyway so, fingers crossed.

Hey, I’ve been there before and it sucks. It makes sense to worry but don’t forget you were prepared before you even picked them up from the airport. You were wearing your N95 and you had the windows down. The odds are well in your favor that you did not get exposed on the ride home. All you have to do now is hole up in your room, keep the corsi cube going, maybe open a window, stuff a towel or something under the door, eat and drink in your room, and mask up before you leave your room. Then it’s just a matter of sticking to it for a week or two. I’ve showered in my mask before and it was fine. If you have central air maybe close those vents if you can. The feeling of being under siege in your own home really sucks. If you’re not sharing air with your parents they can’t get you. I really hate this loving economy, those of us that want to be covid cautious should be able to afford a studio apartment instead of being stuck at home at the mercy of entitled boomers, or spending our whole paycheck to live with covid denialist roommates. The only thing that can solve this long term is just hopefully we find better jobs, and below market rents. Death of Innocence has issued a correction as of 04:32 on Oct 8, 2023 |

I finally found a store here in Melbourne which sells the combo covid/flu A+B/RSV rapid tests. I've been keeping an eye out and most pharmacies don't seem to stock them, I guess there's not much call for them In other epidemic news we're switching from the Zostavax shingles vaccine to Shingrix but it's still only available to people aged 65+ and immunocompromised people at high risk of developing shingles. Even if I could find a sympathetic doctor to write a scrip for me it looks like it'd cost me $560 out-of-pocket since I don't meet the criteria for the free dose

Considering how most people test and the variance between variants, I don't think this is such a hot idea. As an aside and fyi: COVID news are exceptionally slow, I suspect IP is currently sucking all the air out of the room right now, but it started when the public health emergency was cancelled (day to day ~halving the news). At this point it is a trickle, where - as an example - close to zero news items on the dedicated COVID-19 Google news page is about or even related to COVID. As time passes time zones this changes, which is why I've been posting news later and later (as the prime time passes over different areas of the US, more news pop up). For now the best source of COVID news is found here: https://www.infmed.dk/nyheder-udefr...oV,%202019-nCoV But as this is purely scientific publication, there isn't much to post So I want to ask: does anyone have some really good COVID news aggregators?

gradenko_2000 posted:I would not be in favor of making things more complicated. If you test positive, continue to isolate. Simple as. ???? When to Isolate Regardless of vaccination status, you should isolate from others when you have COVID-19. You should also isolate if you are sick and suspect that you have COVID-19 but do not yet have test results. If your results are positive, follow the full isolation recommendations below. If your results are negative, you can end your isolation. IF YOU TEST Negative You can end your isolation IF YOU TEST Positive Follow the full isolation recommendations below When you have COVID-19, isolation is counted in days, as follows: If you had no symptoms Day 0 is the day you were tested (not the day you received your positive test result) Day 1 is the first full day following the day you were tested If you develop symptoms within 10 days of when you were tested, the clock restarts at day 0 on the day of symptom onset If you had symptoms Day 0 of isolation is the day of symptom onset, regardless of when you tested positive Day 1 is the first full day after the day your symptoms started Isolation If you test positive for COVID-19, stay home for at least 5 days and isolate from others in your home. You are likely most infectious during these first 5 days. Wear a high-quality mask if you must be around others at home and in public. Do not go places where you are unable to wear a mask. For travel guidance, see CDC’s Travel webpage. Do not travel. Stay home and separate from others as much as possible. Use a separate bathroom, if possible. Take steps to improve ventilation at home, if possible. Don’t share personal household items, like cups, towels, and utensils. Monitor your symptoms. If you have an emergency warning sign (like trouble breathing), seek emergency medical care immediately. Learn more about what to do if you have COVID-19. Ending Isolation End isolation based on how serious your COVID-19 symptoms were. Loss of taste and smell may persist for weeks or months after recovery and need not delay the end of isolation. If you had no symptoms You may end isolation after day 5. If you had symptoms and: Your symptoms are improving You may end isolation after day 5 if: You are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication). Your symptoms are not improving Continue to isolate until: You are fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication). Your symptoms are improving. 1 If you had symptoms and had: Moderate illness (you experienced shortness of breath or had difficulty breathing) You need to isolate through day 10. Severe illness (you were hospitalized) or have a weakened immune system You need to isolate through day 10. Consult your doctor before ending isolation. Ending isolation without a viral test may not be an option for you. If you are unsure if your symptoms are moderate or severe or if you have a weakened immune system, talk to a healthcare provider for further guidance. Regardless of when you end isolation Until at least day 11: Avoid being around people who are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19. Remember to wear a high-quality mask when indoors around others at home and in public. Do not go places where you are unable to wear a mask until you are able to discontinue masking (see below). For travel guidance, see CDC’s Travel webpage. Removing Your Mask After you have ended isolation, when you are feeling better (no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications and symptoms improving), Wear your mask through day 10. OR If you have access to antigen tests, you should consider using them. With two sequential negative tests 48 hours apart, you may remove your mask sooner than day 10. Note: If your antigen test results1 are positive, you may still be infectious. You should continue wearing a mask and wait at least 48 hours before taking another test. Continue taking antigen tests at least 48 hours apart until you have two sequential negative results. This may mean you need to continue wearing a mask and testing beyond day 10. After you have ended isolation, if your COVID-19 symptoms recur or worsen, restart your isolation at day 0. Talk to a healthcare provider if you have questions about your symptoms or when to end isolation. [1] As noted in the Food and Drug Administration labeling for authorized over-the-counter antigen tests, negative test results do not rule out SARS-CoV-2 infection and should not be used as the sole basis for treatment or patient management decisions, including infection control decisions.

Why not? Barely anyone will actually do it, and fewer still have the means to do so even if they wanted. It's a completely harmless suggestion. Then again, I suppose the same could be said of masking and yet we still urge against that. Although masking is visible and isolating is, to an extent, invisible. Yes, your coworkers will notice your absence, but unless you say you have COVID - and considering how liberals have made it into a moral failing to get sick you might not - they won't know. Maybe you caught that summer flu that's been doing the rounds. Or just took some time off! Who knows! I mean, you're not allowed to say the C-word on Youtube or Twitter, so it's not like you can publicize your condition.

My wife and I are the only people we know who wear masks regularly. I'm starting to feel more and more self-conscious, but not wanting those stories to be me next time is I guess a good enough motivation.
