Perez was much better suited to being the lead driver in a midfield binman team so everybody around F1 could talk about his potential and how good he looked rather than putting him in a position where he can prove that he's poo poo.

Remember his McLaren drive came on the back of his 2012 performance at Sauber - after in which he was confirmed (between Singapore and Japan) he never finished in the points again, while Kobayashi rattled off a podium and 2 other points finishes.
