Also I'm about to ask the real loving question: How does the Merkava compare to its equivalents in other militaries? It seems like you'd have to make major sacrifices in maneuverability, armor, speed, ammo capacity, operational range, etc. to have an MBT that also has space for passengers instead of just the crew.

i think sometimes they get court orders and phony documents to show themselves as true owners of the land, at least i remember one high profile case a few years ago that was like that.

The difference between today and 1939 is that proto-fascism has become an accepted political truth in the whole western world, not just fragmented powers that missed most of the imperialism boat like Germany and Italy.

I wouldn't count on Europe as being a decisive factor in all of this. Their militaries are glorified police forces at this point.

The passenger space is primarily used for ammo.

Overall it's a decent if slow design, with modular armor blocks containing plenty of NERA. Probably goig to start showing up with cope cages

So I was talking about this in the Ukraine thread but the shortest answer is that the IDF has a military doctrine where every Jewish life is precious, and that overrides pretty much everything else. Which means, they don't care about maneuverability, operational range etc. if those things risk Israeli casualties.

They're neurotically casualty avoidant for ideological reasons that get dark pretty fast.

Also, it seems like SOP has been to fill the rear of the Merkava with extra ammo, and we saw some spectacular explosions as a result when Hamas destroyed them.

So you're telling me they just have boxes of tank shells rolling around in the backs of their tanks...? Isn't that why the Sherman had a reputation for immolating its crews in WW2, because they'd just carry spare ammo wherever they could fit it?

This has been going on for decades, yes. Every single settler is fully aware of, and an active participant in, the fact that the land they live on, the houses they live in, and the goods they possess are forcefully taken from palestinians either through murder or dislocation.

Every single adult settler is a legitimate war target.

Yeah. Even recently, settlers go in and just take houses either by force or when the residents are out. Even when the residents have their own house keys. It’s hosed.

Well, they're on purpose built racks that fold down into seats or stretcher spaces... but yeah

E: and that's why the wet storage Shermans do so well, all the storage was well placed and had jackets of anti fire start fluid mix

Up until recently, I've (shamefully) only been vaguely aware of the pro-Israeli p.r. campaign, and even I noticed long ago that they are always very very keen to group Israel with The West. This latest Hamas attack has been explicitly described as a major terrorist attack on The West.
How any time there's an attack or violence against an Israeli, they have a good photo and a heartbreaking bio for the victim.
In the media, virtually every dead Palestinian is just one of a nameless, faceless mass of interchangeable, easily replaced 'others'

This is pretty much how war propaganda has always worked (humanize the “good guys,” dehumanize the “bad guys”), we just have the language and communication networks to call it out en masse now

okay, so al jazeera confirmed that turning the water back on was just an israeli PR stunt, like everything else

quote:

14m ago (18:28 GMT)
Israeli decision to renew water supply ‘publicity stunt’, say Gazans
The Israeli decision to renew water supplies to parts of southern Gaza should be taken with a “grain of salt,” some Palestinians in the besieged coastal enclave say.

“I think this is a publicity stunt and a distraction. I think only very few people will get water. The focus right now should be on food and fuel for electricity,” said Refaat Al Areer, a Gaza-based writer.

“Many water pipes were damaged”, in the Israeli shelling, Al Areer said. And “without electricity, most households will not get the water as we need water pumps to fill the water tanks.”

Al Areer added that the majority of Palestinian families buy fresh water on an average day because tap water is mostly not suitable for human consumption.

Because of Israeli shelling, “freshwater stations are closed and again we need electricity to pump water to our fresh water tanks,” he said.
