I've been hardcore listening to Conan O'Brien's podcast from start to finish and I think he's one of the funniest human beings on the planet and it's a great place to learn more about comedy and comedians.

This is relevant because Conan wrote for SNL, knows and makes fun of Lorne frequently, interviews lots of their cast, and has interesting discussions about forms of comedy where he often brings up Steve Martin due to how uniquely serious he is about it.

That's my logic as well. Bill Heder is funny as hell and Barry was a good show but Eddie had three straight films open at #1 before he turned 30.

edit: He ended up with SEVEN straight films opening #1

I saw him during a tour of a studio in LA in like 1979. Just walking down the hallway. He held my baby sister. He had gray hair.

Murray's been consistently headlining films from the 70's on, and over the last few years I assume he gets paid nicely for the smaller roles and cameos.

He was never the mega star Murphy was during his run, but he hit pretty big stardom from the Ghostbusters - Groundhog Day window or so.

Nah, Winston.

And Beverly Hills Cop was originally written for Stallone and was a much more straight forward cop action movie. However, Stallone added so much to the script that the budget went way out of control so he bailed and made Cobra instead. Once Eddie came onboard, they added all the humor into the script.

edit: Good lord, Cobra made $160 million, how was there no sequel

Cobra was awesome and I too was waiting for the sequel that never came. Smelled like a franchise.

I feel the same way about Chevy Chase as some goons do about Steve Martin. I mean, sure, I remember liking Vacation and Christmas Vacation (European Vacation sucked poo poo) along with Three Amigos when I was young, but he always had this prickishness to his acting I could see right through even as a kid, and it turned out that he really is a massive prick IRL.

I can’t recall ever liking any other films or projects of his other than those three core films, and I haven’t watched any of those in years.

As for Steve Martin, Roxanne is an underrated Cyrano de Bergerac adaptation.

Yeah I can see that, I like Chevy Chase in all the classics , groundhog day the most, and the vacation movies

But yes every character he plays there is a little hint of superiority complex and smarminess with EVERY line he delivers

Even if the character is supposed to the 180 degree opposite

if you haven't seen the director's cut with the original ending DO IT

it's loving amazing and it's crazy that they threw it out because they clearly spent most of the budget on this insane 20 minute finale

I thought Chevy Chase's portrayal in Lost in Translation was pretty good. When he successfully opened that Chase Bank branch in Japan with Jennifer Lawrence, I was on the edge of my seat.

I own the blu-ray which has both versions of the movie and it is loving amazing :hai:

But I do recall seeing a work print version of the film with the original ending some years before, and I don’t think it was the complete ending.

Hey, look. Look, if- if you screw me on this, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine, you rat bastard!
SNL, SCTV, and National Lampoon's will always feel like they've got a strange free-flowing crossover with one another.

I talked about this in another thread, but take the following: Peter Ivers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Ivers

Musician, host of new wave/punk scene, roommate of NL creator, close friend of Belushi. After his death, another friend of Ivers (Harold Ramis) ended up doing a TV thing called The Top for a local LA TV station. The description of that is as follows:

quote:

In the immediate aftermath of Iver's killing, Jove was offered help by Ramis, and together with Flattery, created and made "The Top" for KTLA. The show was a mixture of live music, videos and humor. Performers on the series include Cyndi Lauper, who performed "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and "True Colors". The Hollies performed "Stop! In the Name of Love" and The Romantics performed "Talking in Your Sleep" and "What I Like About You". Guest stars included Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. The host was Chevy Chase, who—dressed as a "punk" of the era—got into a physical altercation with an audience member during the opening monologue. He immediately left the taping. The producers then got Andy Kaufman to fill in for Chase and recorded the host segments at a separate, later, session. It was to be the last professional appearance by Andy Kaufman before his death. "The Top" aired on Friday January 27, 1984 at 7–8 pm. It scored a 7.7% rating and a 14% share.

It just feels like this kind of social/professional space was a lot more fluid and active in that time than I noticed or knew.

Sinead O'Connor ripped up a picture of the pope on it. And I was like gently caress YEAH. Then I realized she wouldn't be back like Nirvana, so in retrospect as a viewer, I might have preferred she hadn't done that. I don't disagree with her decision, but it might have been better for me if she appeared more often after that.

A local casino bought non-stop radio ads for his appearance and played clips, he was leading with observing how cash for gold stores imply we’re all carrying gold around and it’s a problem. Pete Holmes told that joke a decade ago and it was a tiny bit, not the highlight of his whole show.
