Also, I saw some live footage of King Diamond playing in like 2020 and I cannot believe that his voice still sounds that good! You'd think that the falsetto register would go first but he sounds just as good as he did in the 80s.

Yeah, I saw Mercyful Fate last year and King Diamond a couple times before that and he sounds absolutely phenomenal. He does have a lady doing harmonies with his solo band, but yo my ear, that's more recreating all the vocal layers on the albums more than covering anything up with his voice. He still sounds great on his own.

it's wild that this album came out as the same year as krokus' headunter--the drums sound the same on both albums, but otherwise totally different. this is great stuff

I gave up on Metallica a long time ago but one thing I'll give them credit for is that the bands they chose to cover on the garage albums demonstrate that they used to have incredible taste in bands, and Mercyful Fate was one of those bands. Their stuff aged well as long as you're not one of those weirdos who dislikes theatricality in metal (in which case I feel like you kinda picked the wrong genre)

There's an opera singer who does reaction/analysis videos where she talks in depth about various vocal performances. She did one for King Diamond that I thought was fairly interesting:

That’s a great description about how I’m feeling after listening to this album. It’s about the theatrical vocals and the music is there to support those vocals. This is really cool stuff. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that this happened in the early 80s.

Thank you very much for the recommendation.

I've tried listening to Mercyful Fate and it just does nothing for me, I'm not a fan of the operatic singing in general. I do hate fun tho so

I think I personally favor the guitar work on Fatal Portrait and Abigail the most out of King Diamond's solo material. Michael Denner has this soloing style that I really like. It feels more fluid than Andy Laraque to me.

Edit: Also lol my mom got really mad at me in high school because I was listening to the track Black Funeral and she walked in right as the song goes "All hail Satan! YES HAIL SATAN!!"

According to the band, he walked in and heard what they had so far for Cold, asked them to hit record, and he played the solo. Then he asked them to play it back and record again and he harmonized it. He listened back to the solo, decided it was good enough, and left.

I can't describe the sound Dream Unending has or what the gimmick is, but it is extremely my poo poo. I really thought they were going to be a flavor of the week band for me when I first listened to them, but a couple of years later I see their name and I actively plan my listening to them when I get some downtime. So good.

Saw Unleash the Archers last night and they were so good and so much fun. Every member had a poo poo ton of stage presence

e: though for one of the openers I guess the guitarist is from here bc just for that band a bunch of his extended family rushed into the audience and pushed to the front?? like a dozen aunts who did not look like they belonged there and did not know how to behave. They left after. Thoroughly bizarre
