The Wolf House has an atrocious poster, but after 5 minutes the poster makes perfect sense and the movie is like an ASMR MAD GOD

Terrified has maybe the worst name possible (thanks, Art :krust: ), and the poster looks suuuuuper generic, but I thought it was the scariest film I've seen in a decade

The Stuff and The Babadook are the two that immediately spring to mind, plus extra comedy of how they might be two of the furthest apart movies possible, tonally speaking.

One movie is about the lingering, unavoidable nature of trauma. One of them features a child eating shaving foam and a character named Chocolate Chip Charlie.

Agreed. It still keeps me up at night thinking about it! And the zombie kid was loving horrifying, I probably would have passed on this movie if I knew about that beforehand

I'm definitely an Outwaters supporter. Saw it three times.
First time, everyone else left the theater before the climax and goo really got going. The film made me nauseous and I had a headache. Thought it was okay.
Second time I thought it was good.
Third time I thought it was great.

It helps that it's possibly one of the most Californian films of all time. Feel like I've met all of the characters or at least their general Cali archetypes and I do tons of camping, including in Joshua tree. It's classic camping horror. You better believe whenever I'm alone in a tent now in the darkness I'm haunted by the sound of tent zippers.

There's this monumental feeling of never being able to go back, of having made an irreversible decision that has now landed you in horror, which is honestly sort of relatable considering all the stupid and reckless poo poo I've done with friends while camping/hiking.

I have zero problem believing the events of this movie happen to roughly a third of people on their way to Coachella

how did people here like The Outwaters? watched it alone very late last night with all the lights off which kind of felt like the ideal setting. kinda mixed on it but when it was good it was very good and while it never really scared me per se it did give me some hosed up dreams i can't quite remember.

I'll be the dissenting voice that didn't really care for it. I appreciate what it was going for but found it kind of tedious to actually watch, especially the last act that's all chaotic shots in the dark. I was into that part for about 10 minutes before it started wearing thin, and then it goes on for another half hour. It's worth a watch for people into found footage though, especially since most people seemed to like it more than I did.

The thing with werewolf movies is that it's actually somewhat rare that they have legitimately effective and cool looking werewolves in them. Like even in American Werewolf in London you have an amazing transformation scene but the actual werewolf wasn't really all that great. The werewolves in Dog Soldiers are top tier, right up there with The Howling in my opinion. These days you're even less likely to get great werewolves because the tendency is to do them with CG.

Bad Moon is another one that goes under the radar because as a movie overall it's not great but goddamn does it have a cool looking werewolf.

I like the design of the face, other than that I have issues with it. Too low to the ground, and it doesn't move well so they really couldn't show it full frame. I mean don't get me wrong, the movie is a classic and I watch it every October.

i finally watched Wes Craven's Cursed and most of the Rick Baker suit stuff got replaced with crappy CGI but i'm glad Wes fought to keep the suit where it mattered: the shot of the werewolf giving Christina Ricci the finger

Yea Landis really shot the hell out of it and created some iconic shots, so everything definitely does come together nicely. But I do have particular preferences when it comes to werewolf design and they lean more towards the upright Wolfman type ala Dog Soldiers or The Howling.

I agree with this, but I do love the quadrupedal monster in the Landis film. I guess because it’s kind of different from what we usually saw/see.

Also for me the Landis film really works because of the dark humor. Every time Jack appears he is more and more decomposed, etc.

And I know it’s probably not meant to be funny, but I can’t help but giggle a little at the carnage and total chaos that erupts after he transforms in the porno theater. The cars and busses skidding around, people flying through plate glass storefront windows, etc.

Also with regards to The Outwaters, I appreciate it more because I consume a ton of found footage. It's worth it, you find a lot of immersive and creative stuff but also there's tons of bland white noise.
In a genre like that, The Outwaters shines like a gem. How much found footage can you find that is so creative, surreal, and...cosmic i guess??? in its horror. They exist but there isn't much.
Every found footage you're waiting for the shoe to drop after all the (often boring) characterization and buildup and for my money there's almost no other found footage that delivers that drop with as much total bug gently caress insanity.

Also it's a good looking movie. I get the frustration with the small light and window of vision, but it is batshit insane and I'm constantly watching found footage and being like "oh another monster man I guess...or a shadow in the woods...why can't you be more like The Outwaters??"
Because keep in mind it's a film as cheap as any other found footage but the ability for them to deliver truly unspeakable and creative poo poo in the last 30 minutes on that sort of budget speaks to real talent.

Really looking forward to his next found footage film. Think its already done and touring festivals maybe?

Saw X was really good, the most one of these has felt like a real movie in a long time

I kind of wish Cecilia was slightly less despicable. The way she gave honestly good advice to the other participants made her kind of interesting. And a good performance from the actress. It would have made the reversal a little more interesting to me if there was a bit more to that dynamic than just her being even more "evil" than Jigsaw. I think the film went a little too hard on exonerating ole Jig in some ways

Something I like is that people actually beat their traps

The Kessler Wolf absolutely wouldn't work as a bipedal monster. The way it's written and filmed portrays it as a full on monstrous animal. Nothing of David remains after the transformation, as Alex learns at the end (unless you buy into the suicide reading). It's just a murder beast moving from victim to victim. Anything more humanoid would detract from that.

Paris got a lot of things wrong, but making the werewolves humanoid and intelligent was a BIG misstep.

Underwater did a lot for me. I've watched it a few times now and it fully engages me every time. The setting feels incredibly oppressive, the performances are honestly better than expected and the entire movie feels like it's greater than the sum of its parts. My only real complaint about it is that I could have watched another hour of it. It's just a little too lean, which is a rare complaint for me.

I liked Underwater a lot and thought its short runtime worked in its favor. It emphsizes that they are all in extreme danger, everything is collapsing and if Cthullhu doesn't eat them, just simply being where they are will kill them. It just sold the ticking clock very well to me.

That's a really good point. To be honest, I just wanted more as there aren't too many movies quite like it. But the whole "we're on a timer" thing really lends the movie its sense of urgency and it's one of the things it does best.
