Cursive is a massive waste of school time and resources and you should be embarrassed if you're boomer brained enough to think it isn't. Hopefully that's dropped before my kids are old enough to be affected

How can you have a strong opinion about this type of thing?
|

Because a lot of us are old enough to have been forced to learn it, never use it, and are stunned to see it forced upon the next generation My signature isn't even cursive any more it's a tremendous waste of resources and the school day is short enough as it is

Just because you don’t “use” something you learned in school doesn’t automatically mean it’s not beneficial to development. If you want to argue that learning cursive provides no benefits to motor learning, skill acquisition, etc, that’s fine. I just don’t think it’s in the curriculum because they think you’ll need it later in life.

I would imagine video games and cell phones provide adequate fine motor blah blah If there is some low bar of "learning how to do skill acquisition" maybe pick something that has an economic benefit besides being able to read your great grandmother's birthday cards I guess you're playing devil's advocate, but I don't see this as a defensible position bordering on absurdist

If you bring cursive back make it as part of an art class with big fountain pens. In that context cursive rocks. It’s just garbage when you’re getting told to do everything else in it.

But students are already demonstrably behind in ELA, and cursive, while awesome, is not useful - unlike reading and writing. Cursive usually starts in 2nd or 3rd grade, and takes up a significant amount of instruction time. We need to be using that time for reading skills.

There is literally no value to it and the posted article raises literally zero valid points in favor of bringing it back as a universal requirement. Its only purpose was to speed up handwriting in a world where typing didn't exist. You don't need faster handwriting in any context anymore. I mean, I work in manufacturing and I use cursive literally every day. It’s super useful for me. I’m not saying that it should be absolutely compulsory and everyone must be required to use it. I also agree you can argue other things may be more important - especially considering the challenges kids in schools face and how they change over time. Some things might be more important to focus on in some years, less in others. Hell, I never thought I’d ever use it … until I started using it again in my mid 20s. Never thought I’d be using sine, cosine, and tangent on a regular basis either but here I am. I guess my point is that you shouldn’t be completely baffled that other people in other circumstances use skills that you consider to be 100% useless. E: it takes me a while to post anything nowadays and of course I get beat while writing with maybe the gooniest post possible on the subject. Some people will find it incredibly useful, some won’t. That’s life Also joke’s on you we’re a non union shop! Ahahahhahahaah … ha… haaaaa… Even more of a derail I know, but I don’t think everything can be automated. There will always be a place for human operated, human set-up machines. Doing automation with completely robotic production makes absolute sense when you’re making hundreds of thousands of parts, but there’s a much larger proportion of manufacturing than most people think that’s runs of … 300 parts. 500 parts. And getting a robot set up for that is unwieldy in most scenarios, to say the least.

Because you need to know how to do your own taxes, and is the bedrock for teaching logic across all cultures for the last 4000-6000 years. Vs cursive, which.... maybe 500 million people across the entire span of human history have ever known or used, and is now on the edge of being a dead writing style

the SA california politics thread: Newsom vetoes insulin price caps eh man whatever nbd Newsom requires cursive instruction THE WORLD IS ENDING the actual changes seem like they'd do gently caress all given the "appropriate grade levels" and "or joined italics" bits. it's not specifying a specific method and already required handwriting instruction. idk what actually goes on in CA schools at this point but i assume most weren't teaching handwriting as entirely block letters there was maybe some old law that did specify a specific method based on whatever this is, which does reference the method most of the posters here probably recognize as "cursive", albeit amusingly in the context of essentially saying "yes the legislature knows the actual schools are basically ignoring this and we are very mad but can't actually do anything other than complain" poo poo's just a slow news day and the media thought it'd get a bunch of clicks talking about a thing lots of their target audience have less than fond school memories of, and they were right!

I think cursive is a pretty useless skill, but it’s better not to pretend you’re an education expert. These decisions should be left to civil servants. American schools are overdemocratized. poo poo like school boards and loud parents — even well-meaning, progressive ones — get in the way of experts doing what they do best. Even if the educators occasionally gently caress up it’s still better than letting the public decide what students should be taught. Nowhere else in the world are parents so influential over what gets taught.

The "we're not qualified to debate this" defense doesn't work when it's a dead form of language nobody has used in the workplace in 20, maybe 30 years. It's not a medical diagnosis or whatever I'm curious about the guy in the shop still using cursive though The price cap on insulin is a real bummer but I don't take it so I don't know much about it. Let the bike shedding about cursive continue. Probably he vetoed it because he's got some sweetheart deal with the pharmacutcal industry/trying to keep their research campuses in California. San Francisco passed a big life sciences bond at the beginning of covid to attract more investment there

Here's my experience with cursive in the Californian public education system: 4th-5th grade: You have to learn and use cursive for everything. 6th-7th grade: I mean sure you can do assignments in cursive if you really want, but teach would prefer print. 8th-12th grade: Print only, teacher is uninterested in trying to decode all the students' respective styles. University: Type it all up, unless it's an in person exam then print only unless your cursive is immaculate.

Being able to read cursive is a useful skill. There are undoubtedly more useful as well as beneficial things to devote time to than teaching how to write it in 3rd grade.

Wegovy/Ozampeic (however you spell it) the patent expires in 2031 but only for the injectable version. The pill version (i.e. no needles floating around your house) won't go out of patent for quite a long time yet.
