idk “don’t put any money into crypto you’re not fully willing to get scammed out of” still seems as valid today as it did 10 years ago

just like with the non-crypto economy the fact that some people have made out like bandits doesn’t mean that just anyone can, it requires those who make serious money to have done so at the expense of everyone who didn’t, and means any given person is staggeringly more likely to have gotten turbofucked in any of the thousands of common ways crypto assholes wind up getting divorced and/or foreclosed on because they were convinced they knew better

That loving website posted:

When we decompose each overall wealth decile by age, we see a pattern where the lower the decile is, the younger it is. But there are still a lot of older people in and around the bottom of the wealth distribution. Around 39 percent of the bottom half, which collectively owns 2 percent of household wealth, are over the age of 50.
~
Wealthier deciles do tend to be dominated by those with college degrees, but the bottom of the wealth distribution is populated by people from all education levels. In fact, around 1 in 4 individuals in the bottom half of the wealth distribution have college degrees.
~
The fact that we see the same wealth distribution over and over again no matter how we slice the data is a pretty solid indicator that this particular distributive skew is driven by the rules of our economic system, not a contingent issue with one group or another.

Sometimes when I present this data, people will point out that it just reveals that the wealth distribution is an 80-20 Pareto distribution (80% of the wealth is owned by the top 20%). Individuals who point this out seem to think that this is some kind of natural law that we are helpless to resist rather than an observation about the distributions that inevitably flow from certain systems, which of course could be changed.

IMO those charts don't say anything our collective personal anecdotes haven't already suggested. The solution is tax the ever loving gently caress out of the top deciles and instead of an inheritance tax set an inheritance limit.

Indeed, indeed. wild how much more diverse the 10th percentile by generation is, vs education and especially race.

Maybe post those charts in the first place :iiam:? IDK why you left out the pro-socialism chart and the US deliberately choosing to be bad chart:

one thing I would add to Xaris's excellent post is that it has to be specifically fossil fuels, and not any other kind of energy source that we have since discovered and are capable of using, because fossil fuels can be moved around, can be concentrated, can be traded for, and otherwise is a fungible commodity

coal-fired steam engines were chosen over water mills during the Industrial Revolution because you couldn't concentrate wealth with water mills, and you couldn't easily move your water wheels around to wherever laborers are most easily exploitable

you're not going to see a movement to solar or hydro or even nuclear power, for the same reasons

It is literally impossible to watch sports outside your chosen team's local TV market by legal means without paying, eg, literally $450 for every football game aired during a season

A guy in my neighborhood gave me the login info for his NBA League Pass so I could watch the Celtics in Jersey, but it still doesn't work for any game that's on TNT or ESPN. For those, if you don't have cable, you're just kinda hosed

pirate streams are pretty much the only way I watch sports at home now

maybe in another decade or two they'll finally break down and let you just pay by the season for quality streaming access to 100% of games, but I'm not holding my breath

I think you can already do this for at least some sports but it's prohibitively expensive for content you're not gonna use 95% of

let me pay $15 a month for my team's games and Red Zone. That's already highway robbery IMO and it'd be way better than what they're doing now

Premier League games in the US, for the moment, are actually in a fairly good place with Peacock. I can usually count on being able to watch the game and be able to watch it later. No blackouts. I guess it's because it's a foreign league so there's a little less incentive to screw around and there's no concern about not filling the stadia.
