100%. It's just a matter of time until you have to upgrade to their new ad-free service for an extra $5 a month or some bullshit.

It seems like every loving tech thing these days is just an ad delivery service that you have to pay for. If you watch cable (I have my reasons) there are pop up ads during whatever show on every single program on TV. Most of the time it's an ad for a different program on that network but it's loving annoying when there is a movie on with subtitles hardcoded into it and the ad pops up and covers the dialog.

How are people so loving stupid that all of this advertising is clearly where the money is because dumbasses fall for it and click whatever shiny thing pops up in front of them?

loving Microsoft is doing this in Edge/Windows 11. I use that poo poo for work and when I load up Teams for a meeting I get a pop up like "HAY WE HAVE NEW THEMEs CLCIK HERE!!!!" which is the last thing I'm going to be before joining a meeting. Edge is the same way where it always wants you to try this new stupid AI feature. How companies are allowing Edge to be used in the Enterprise is beyond me. God help you if you have ADHD.

And speaking of Edge. https://www.techradar.com/computing...chrome-using-it

All this makes the IE anti-trust stuff from the 00s seem small.

Yeah I've been wondering when the EU notices that. They made a big deal about Microsoft abusing their position in the OS market to push IE, and it wasn't nearly as flagrant as it is now.

One of the most annoying ways they do this is they made Windows deliberately disregard its own default browser setting and just made it open Edge for any links directly from the OS.

Pretty sure this doesn't violate the anti-trust for browser access(which they were originally taken to task over) but it IS one absolutely passive-aggressive catty bitch approach without crossing the line

Using Edge to download Chrome is a chump move. I didn't move to Chrome when it became a thing and I'm glad because everyone that did is migrating to Firefox again anyway lol

But won't somebody think of the poor mega-corporation? They deserve money because they are hosting videos made by others, purely out of the kindness of their own hearts, getting absolutely nothing out of it. Surely paying like $13 a month to not see ads for now is worthwhile, and again at $20 in the future and then possibly maybe seeing some ads for that money but they think they're really worth watching tho? What about that corporation!

Nearly every IT person the world has done this.

Many, many, many times you need open a browser on a Window server but IE is locked down by default and can't do poo poo. Easier to just uncheck the popup in Server Manager, then download Chrome. IE/Edge always default to msn.com or some other site that looks like the cover of magazine you see in line at the grocery check-out. That really sucks when your server is dying and at 100% CPU but then everything freezes because a video is trying to auto play.

Yeah, I added ublock when this started and its been spot on for dealing with this poo poo. Had to block a few by element untill I got stuck with the stop vid after one second and no scroll available couldn't work out to block without breaking the feed, forced ublock to purge and update and its sorted it.

How do you get this working on your phone, sometimes nice to put a liveset or two on at work to make the day go faster.

My 75 year old father finally got a warning about it, which was a fear of mine since I knew I'd have to show him how to get around it. He's fairly tech savvy but hates breaking routine. Though, to his credit, he did opine that YT trying to say adblockers were hurting content creators was 'total bullshit, they don't pay those people what they're worth and never will.'

I think the reality is no one will pay the creators what they’re worth because if that were the case the creators would all just live off their Patreons.

Hell, there’s even a function on YouTube for you to tip your creator and basically no one uses it.

Its pretty loving funny that they can detect the ad-blocker and then popup a notice with text and images and poo poo, but they can't just put an advertisement in that same space because ad blockers are too good.

Salt Fish posted:

I'm no tech but I suspect that the adblockers work by preventing 3rd party content like ads from playing, and the reason why all they can do is force that screen in is because it's native. I suspect the moment the script attempts to pull anything from anywhere else it'd be blocked.

Honestly, I'd be willing to play nice with advertisers if they weren't so incredibly stupid both with their ads and their intrusive efforts. One of the stories I like to tell is that back in the early days of social media we had a client that had some sort of software product aimed at college students. My manager had been running these dull ads featuring stock photos and equally stock copy and of course they were being ignored. I asked if I could experiment since the campaign was going nowhere, got permission to do whatever, and created a couple of meme-based ads with brief, snappy copy. One featured "gently caress Yeah" guy, which I hand-drew to reproduce. The ads didn't do gangbusters but they actually got a response vs. the nothing my manager set up. Because "gently caress Yeah Guy" was swearing-adjacent (there was no swearing in the ad) he demanded I pull it in case the client saw. I had the numbers backing up my work (basically 'some clicks' vs. 'absolutely no clicks') and pointed out that because the client wasn't even going to see the ad because he wasn't a college student and so there was no risk. My manager argued that "well what if his daughter sees it and reports back" to which I replied "Then it means that the ad works".

Out of arguments he just demanded I pull it anyway. All the old guard I worked with were clueless about social media, could barely use Office, and really didn't socialize with any of the staff that actually did the work for clients (and eventually they all left, myself included).

I've never worked in bigger shops but my gut says that it's the same bullshit on bigger scales. Ironically I was going to get YouTube Premium for the ability to download videos but now gently caress them, I'm not giving YouTube a dime out of spite.

It's going to pay off eventually--I'm sure of it.

Any day now.

Honestly, my response to this has been to 99% quit youtube, and watch a couple small channels (who were never going to monetize anything anyway) on anonymous mode.

Youtube has basically made its money poisoning the brains of society anyway, constantly recommending rightwing conspiracy bullshit because the videos are long and obsessive maniacs will watch the whole thing and share, thereby maximizing engagement metrics. If Youtube is desperate, then good. I hope they die.

Manually updating all filters fixed it again, np!

This has now become a recurring thing whenever I check YT (like 12 hours apart, at breakfast & before bed usually). Updating filters fixes it every time, but if it's just the one tab incognito is fine.

Ad servers can eat my whole butt. Literally every content creator I follow has made the same statement about how they just do it for fun, YT isn't their job & doesn't pay squat anyway, and if you WANT to pay them there's a patreon/ko-fi/merch store/whatever.

The filter list that uBlock uses for the new YouTube fixes is called "Quick Fixes", and gets updated every 12 hours, you probably just happen get updates just before they're pushed to you normally.

Do you use an iPhone or an Android?

I stopped using iPhones about five years ago. Back then there was no useful browser-based adblock that worked on YouTube, thanks to the closed nature of the Apple ecosystem. I had Firefox mobile, but I couldn't get useful plugins. Not sure if that's changed in the intervening years.

For my Android devices, I use mobile Firefox, uBlock Origin, and Ghostery. Same as with my desktop Firefox. I've never gotten a YouTube ad on mobile or desktop, so it's been working pretty well.

If you have a decent video player like mpv (or iina on mac) you can integrate yt-dlp and just drag the url to the player and stream as well. A while ago youtube wanted me to add passport or cc info to watch age restricted videos like ww2 documentaries (thankfully they seem to have stopped that now) and this worked well to get around that without adding writes to my ssd. I have heard you sometimes need to be online to watch youtube premium downloaded videos so if that's why you wish to download them maybe yt-dlp is the better choice.

Youtube got a new ceo in febuary, this seems more like a new ceo big dick move than youtube struggling given their revenue has been trending up for a long time. yt revenue was 15.1 bil for 2019 and 29.2 bil for 2022 for reference. there are things of value on there for sure but probably would be better for society if it did die.

if you want to update the youtube block open ublock dashboard -> filter lists -> click little clock icon next to builtin ublock - quick fixes and click update now. Youtube has been updating anti-adblock script fairly randomly up to several times a day whereas ublock auto-update happens at regular intervals which is why it may not be adequate (if you click the eye next to a list you can see when it expires in the header, quick fixes seems to be 12 hours). If you don't get the youtube message you obviously dont need to do anything.

if you want to force update all lists on same screen purge all caches and update.
