Abu Ubeida is on aljazeera, he just released what I can only describe as some of the most insane combat footage I have ever seen 1) he says in the last 24 hours hamas destroyed 25 IDF vehicles and tanks. 2) he announces that they're using a TBG RPG, which is a thermobaric missile that is essentially a room clearing RPG to clear out entire rooms of IDF whenever they try to set up frontal operating bases. 3) he then shows a bunch of clips of Hamas fighters constantly getting to within 15 feet or zero distance of several israeli tanks and destroying them, absolutely insane footage. they are always at point blank range. it's loving insane. 4) one of the shots is a hamas fighter CLIMBING AN IDF BULLDOZER , lighting it on fire and planting a flag on it. None of the IDF tanks have infantry around them at all, literal sitting ducks. there's like five tanks in a row, and the hamas guys can walk to within 15 feet and shoot all of them. National Guard and Active units have restrictions on rank based on authority, which kind of sucks since people can be stuck in a queue waiting for somebody to retire or switch units to get ranks (and associated pay increases), but means that the rank and authority structure makes sense. The reserves in the states don't have that kind of restriction, so the hospital unit I was in way back in the day was bloated with NCOs and mid rank officers. Since the IDF is mostly a reserve force they probably modeled it based on reservists in the US so that makes sense, although yeah in the US the length of service required for a rank was still pretty high, so it's still a bit out of whack to have senior NCO ranks given to a kid at 20 or 22. bobtheconqueror has issued a correction as of 18:24 on Nov 4, 2023 |

A 20 year old reservist ssg is asking for trouble and its a miracle they can even leave the motorpool in an organized fashion (but as we have seen with the fields of merkavas haphazardly rolling out in a giant blob, even that might be up in the air) starting to think that the idf is just a place for people who are still basically children to be indoctrinated into a fascist cult and taught how to genocide officership is given out like a participation trophy

Back in WWII, the US Army had enlisted ranks up to specialist, then it split into two branches for either leadership roles, non-commissioned officers starting with sergeants, and a non leadership branch that was still just called specialist. The rank and pay would increase and was an indicator of experience but not authority. It's completely unsurprising that this would immediately be hollowed out to participation trophies.
