anyway back to Parisian workers in the late 19th century, they had all sorts of daily rituals involving local cafes that were sort-of specific to particular workshops (metal, leather, woodwork, etc), and workers would start their day before work with a quarter-liter of wine, then after an hour or so would go back for more wine, and then after another hour go back for some absinthe, and then in the afternoon it was time for more wine, and then later some more wine, and then before closing time a quick stop for more wine, and then after work it was time for more wine with the boys.

Saturday was a workday, and most workers (up to the early 20th century and certainly not after WW1 broke out) Monday was treated basically as a holiday and they just spent all day at the cafe drinking and doing labor organizing. Many cafes in Paris operated as a sort of LinkedIn for workers, brokering jobs. People had cafe owners perform marriages and baptisms.

Any time you read about how mundane stuff worked a long time ago, you realize more that we simply cannot project modern conventions back into the past.
