Good news! https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-11-09/aukus-submarine-sales-timelines-revealed/103083780 First newly built nuclear-powered submarine under AUKUS likely to be sold in 2038, US admiral reveals 2038. When I guessed 2040 ages ago I was joking. Please stop using my wild predictions as actual timelines Fortunately that's so far away everyone today will have other jobs by then.

My guess: not well

Walking in a Chinese city sucks rear end because the streets are so goddamn huge and traffic lights are not a given. Like it’s better than some of the horror I hear about the US because at least there are proper sidewalks but it’s still miserable. That was my experience last month anyway.

Orange Devil posted:Walking in a Chinese city sucks rear end because the streets are so goddamn huge and traffic lights are not a given. yeah, from what I remember the newer parts have ultra wide roads but also adjacent-but-separated motorcycle / bicycle / slow traffic loading streets and ultra wide sidewalks so it really was a mixed bag. the older parts of cities were dense as hell though and very walkable its been a while and I didn't get a chance to go to brand new areas so hopefully there are some new developments that improve on those

You don't need a car to get around in big cities. In small cities, you can still get around in 2 wheeled electric things and 4 wheeled micro cars. So I wouldn't call China car brain. It's just the middle class grows so fast they are still the biggest growing car marker in the world. Also the Chinese government subsidized alot of gas to EV transition in said market (not for the green energy reasons, but for energy independent reasons.)

interesting article from 2019 about Huawei sanctions with a look back though mao-era development of chips, aircraft and tech: https://redsails.org/emergency-measures/quote:Full original title: “Emergency Measures”: The Mao-era computer development strategy illuminates the path forward for Huawei out of their difficult situation. some good mao quotes: quote:Under the technological blockade of the U.S. and the Soviet Union, China could only follow the development route of domestic independent design and production. It was just as Chairman Mao said: “Blockade us. Blockade us for eight or ten years and China’s problems will be solved.” quote:In 1965, Chairman Mao returned to Mt. Jinggang, and on 25 May had the following conversation with Zhang Pinghua and Wang Zhuochao:
