Why didn't GM make an El Camino out of the last big station wagons? I know the answer, and the equivalent low-spec C/K/Silverados were better in every way, but it would have been cool.

They did. It's called the Commodore Ute.

Yeah, but the OG El Camino was also full-size B body based so it'd be a bit of a bookend to have the final edition be the same.

That, and outside of the F body, I don't think GM had a midsized rwd platform in '95.

lmao

In my mind I was specifically thinking of the Mustang Mach-E, and with Mitsubishi the Eclipse though I suppose they technically called it the 'Eclipse Cross'.

At least with the Maverick it slots in a similar position that the OG one does, namely can't afford the big car get the small one instead.

Size categories are based on interior volume, not exterior dimensions. And even if they were, the El Camino is plenty long enough to be "full sized".

??? it's a chevelle with a bed on the back.

if we just look at length for some reason, a 66 elco is less than 2 inches longer than a 66 chevelle, and over 14 inches shorter than a 66 impala.

i guess i should have said "on the midsize platform" because i guess you're right, the cab is probably small enough to technically be compact, even if it's the same as a chevelle from the a-pillars forward (and most of the frame iirc).

The Crown has been in continuous production since 1955 as a sedan, and remains so, they've just added a crossover to the Crown nameplate alongside. I believe they're bringing back an estate version too for the first time since the 170 series.

That's true but it hasn't been brought back, it's just evolved considerably in the decades since the US last got them.

e; it's also worth noting that all 'modern' (90s onwards) Crowns have been tall and awkward looking when completely stock. Check out what Aimgain have done with the crossover, it looks loving great.

That said, somehow I don't hate the Sport wagon

It's still to fat, though. At least they reduced the gaping maw.

edit to the edit: according to Wikipedia, there will be an actual Crown Sedan later this year or next. Of course they built the useless "crossover" first, and chose that to bring the name back to the US. We are the world's foremost experts on "fat and bloated" after all.

Pretty sure it's bagged but even 50mm higher than that at a totally reasonable driving height it'd look great.

Stock 170, 180 and 210 series crowns all look awkward and huge (kudos for the 200 for not being as bad). They're massive top of the line high luxury cars crammed full of ultra high end kit, not a BMW M3.

E; see above for the 200 actually being pretty decent

2nd E; I realise I'm sounding confrontational but actually I agree that the crossover looks bad, I just think it's more a factor of ride height than anything. It's a bit slab sided but nothing some skirts and wheels won't fix, and previous crowns have all ended up with aero as manufacturer option with this likely being no exception.

Who buys Toyota Crowns? Who is the target market? Old people and taxi firms. Who appreciates the ease of ingress and egress afforded by higher seating and ride height? Old people and taxi passengers. So why does the global release Crown make an attempt to look "cool"? Because you have a bad back and bad knees and you're getting on a bit, but you don't want to admit it yet. Toyota Crown. Not the car you want, probably the car you need.

The crown isn't an SUV though, it's just a tall sedan or whatever you want to call it. You don't have to climb up into it. If an SUV or truck is like getting on a bar stool, and a sports car is like sitting on the floor, the crown would be more like sitting on an office chair. A regular sedan is more like, I dunno, a standard height toilet.

You haven’t actually seen a Crown, have you?
It’s a “crossover sedan”. It’s every bit as tall as a CUV, because it is, without the “U”. No it’s not as tall as a full-on SUV, but it’s taller than a sedan. Seating position is at least a foot higher than my Crown Victoria.

I've seen them, but not the inside. Point is, Toyota's own press material markets the car as "easy to get in and out of". It's not a car built for its driving dynamics.
