The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.
Hah, I sometimes take my dog to dachshund gatherings and the race is always a highlight

Ausgbs is a chat thread of sorts

The Australiana thread tends toward some degree of discuss and documentation of the Australian diaspora

Mackay, QLD, 1969.

Railway Square, Sydney, early 60's.

Spring Hill, Brisbane, 1973.

Golden Grove St/Rose St, Golden Grove, Sydney, mid 70's.
The suburb of Golden Grove was incorporated into Newtown, though remains a small locality. the factories are gone and are now social housing. The pictured end of Rose St is gone and is now part of USYD.

Ship Inn, Vulture St, Brisbane, 1985.

Bit of childhood terror there, when I was a lad we watched some Aussie soap where a guy "gassed himself" in his apartment, they banged on the door and got no replay but smelled gas and they were like "oh well he's dead". We went to Brissy on the train and I was convinced those Spring Hill hotels was where it happened.

And then the 1955 flood came and hosed things up properly! There's massive levee banks nowdays to keep the river in, but it still comes right up every few years.

Forest Lodge is still a suburb. Macdonaldtown was incorporated into Erskineville at some point but I am having trouble getting that info straight (all my books are in boxes)

Re: Macdonaldtown Does this help?

quote:

The area was declared by Proclamation of the Governor dated 23rd May, 1872, constituted a Municipality under the name and style of the “Municipal District of Macdonald Town”. The Proclamation was published in the New South Wales Government Gazette No.144, Thursday 23 May, 1872, page 1333. The Proclamation was authorised under the provisions of the “Municipalities Act of 1867”. The name of the of the “Municipality of Macdonaldtown” was altered from and after the passing of the Act to the “Borough of Erskineville” by Act of Parliament entitled “Borough of Erskineville Naming Act of 1893”, assented to on the 27 March, 1893. The Act was passed under the authority of the “Municipalities Act of 1867”. The “Municipality of Erskineville” was amalgamated with and absorbed into the City of Sydney in accordance with the provisions of the “Local Government (Areas) Act”, No. 30 1948, which came into effect on the 1st January, 1949.

I love the grimy look, and the lack of trees makes for great views, but you know that whole place would be HOT AS poo poo in summer because of it.

Remember that whenever boomers n poo poo say it was just as hot when they were young, it's because there were no fkn trees. If it's just as hot now WITH trees, poo poo's bad.
