Interesting that they seem to be setting up a coup against the Soviets as a bad thing.

The 1991 Soviet coup attempt was, in fact, widely seen as bad in the west.

Given how many times they've started a season with Ed being in the wrong only to turn things around by the end I fully expect him to be on the union side by the end of the season (somehow ending up in charge of the whole thing.)

But also, Ed is in the wrong viz Kelly and going to Earth to be a grandpa. Though I guess the team-up could mean Kelly ends up bringing her own Mars company to Mars, with blackjack and life-seeking sentinel droids.

In the FAM universe under Gorbachev the USSR has apparently seen a massive increase in living standards and freedoms, and his opponents up to now have been portrayed as those wanting to return to older Soviet values. How could that coup not be a bad thing?

They've probably got a lot of footage of Putin they want to use in the next season.

I have neglected to come up with a clever title
pretty good episode up until the Margo part and the pace became absolutely glacial

look at Margo, her life is boring so we will make the scenes boring.

she doesn't have any friends so we'll make this part feel like not having any friends.

someday this will all be relevant for a reason

also the mars upstairs/downstairs splitscreen scene hurt my puny human brain and felt extremely on-the-nose

Yeah, no poo poo. I’m saying that it’s interesting that a big-budget American TV show made by the Apple corporation would portray it that way.

I’m pretty sure they are using North Koreans as stand ins for China since Apple has a ban on portraying the Chinese government in anything that can be perceived in a negative light

Which is funny because they finally did add in China to the space race but they conveniently are doing their own thing, and I'm sure are not making any mistakes and are perfect and great.

They should just never mention China at all. It would be funnier if their attempt to placate China ended up implying it was some backwater completely irrelevant in world affairs :v:

Unfortunately, in this timeline Comrade Deng was not able to come to power and theorise Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, and China therefore never became a world power on the basis of its strong market economy.

You get the sense that the back two episodes of Season Three had some pretty big reshoots. The North Korean subplot is foreshadowed in earlier episodes, but only in voice over / newscasts (which would have all been filmed at the same time for budget reasons, easy for pick ups). Plus that would explain the potential Russian abortion plot cliffhanger melting into thin air.

Fun little production mistakes:

- the Soviet cops were wearing modern Russian police uniforms with the word "Politsia" on the back, which wasn't really a thing. The Soviet and early Russian police system was called "Militsia" and this only changed with the police reforms under Medvedev some time around~2010. The Soviets didn't want to use the word Politsia due to its association with the widely despised Tsarist police system.

- Margo's house had a bell and intercom system at the entrance and AFAIK this also wasn't a thing in the Soviet Union. Apartment house entrances usually weren't locked and everyone could just walk up to your apartment door.

- Russian cops rolling up in freaking Mercedes Sprinters lol

Also it was pretty surreal to see Margo walking down a modern eastern European street full of vintage Soviet cars. Took me completely out of the episode. But I can't really blame them for that. It's not like they can film in actual Russia or build a working time machine on a TV show budget.

Some random thoughts:

- Mars colony being turned into a lovely 19th century company town and then revolt has been done to death in sci-fi, so I'm not that excited for that plot. On the other hand, the alien Mars life thing is pretty fresh and I like where it's going. A great chance for Ed to get his brain infected by Mars microbes and either die or become immortal from it.

- Occasionally the lazy writing on this show sucks so much that it breaks my suspension of disbelief. Like, the naive but good hearted all-american working class hero that is just too dumb to read his contract before signing and going on a dangerous two year job on Mars(and didn't even think to ask what happens if he needs to quit the job and return to earth early). And the months long training for the mission of course didn't teach even the most basic information about their future home and work place like the layout of the base. I'm resigned to this being a dumb soap opera show now though and I'm still onboard till the end.
