Naval WARNO: Prepare for Immediate Defensive Counter Air. Implement Contingency Operation Rufous Hornero

Nearest hostiles are 150 km / 80 nautical miles from the FEBA, with a vanguard strike package of 8x J-7s and 4x JH-7s heading north from Rio Grande's direction. Naval intelligence estimates that they may be targeting either the Argentine Fleet or Rio Gallegos Airport. An additional hostile group is approaching northwest from Ushuaia's direction with an unknown composition that may be targeting the Chilean Fleet or Puerto Natales Airport.

Standing CAP patrols and alert fighters are marshaling near AO Bolt and AO Arrow, and additional Air Force fighters and E-3 Sentries are scrambling to get back up into the air after our last major offensive. The A-4 Skyhawks aboard the ARA Vienticinco de Mayo (Ford flight) are ordered to arm and refuel, and get back up there. You may not be air-to-air specialists, but we need every airframe we have up there defending us. After taking off near Golfo Xaultegua, group up and follow your flight leader and engage in DCA. I recommend proceeding to the airspace near the Vasquez Glacier Radar Site - a 1200 m / 4,000 ft tall mountain that offers a good engagement zone for the Skyhawk. The CNS Aspirante Isaza will be nearby to Isla Malvinas III, as well as a small Argentine Marine force on the island. They may be targeted by the J-11s, but could also offer a small amount of surface air defense assistance.

Current Situation Map:

Naval intelligence estimates that T1 is likely the 8x J-7s tackling Uzi / Colt, and T2 is the 4x JH-7s aiming for the Argentine Fleet or Rio Gallegos Airport. T3 and T4 are less defined, but previous intel indicates that T4 may be 2x J-11s targeting either the Chilean Fleet or Puerto Natales Airport, and T3 could perhaps be 4x J-7s giving them air cover. Alternatively these groups could be more mixed in composition. AD1 are a couple of Grisha patrol corvettes. AD2 is the Punta Arenas offensive and littoral fleet. AD3 is the Tierra del Fuego offensive. Somewhere off the east coast, likely near T2, is also the 1st PLAN Fleet. Avoid these hostile air defense zones.

Conditions and Limitations:

1. Because we are reacting to contact, our jets are not prepared for battle. Expect a cold start with whatever weaponry that the ordnance handlers have managed to get onto your aircraft. Time will be of the essence.

2. Also, the time is 2200, and the sun has set approximately 1.5 hours ago. Astronomical twilight has begun - the horizon can't be easily seen and the stars are out. Use of night vision devices will be obligatory.

3. Reinforcements may take time to arrive. Ford may be facing upwards of six aircraft already in the air, and the J-11s have BVR missiles that are equivalent to AMRAAMs. The Navy has called for assistance by air superiority aircraft but they may need to travel 200 km from Rio Turbio (Pontiac) or 400 km from El Calafate (Venom). Until those reinforcements show up, delay a decisive battle, use the terrain, and do what you can to negate their high altitude advantage.

4. E-3 Sentry Air Battle Manager support may be delayed by up to 20 minutes, as the aircraft are reported to be rapidly resetting after a previous mission. Naval ABMs are being coordinated with, but you may be forced to operate without immediate overwatch.

5. A variety of hostile air defense zones have been previously identified, and must be avoided. Everything will look different in the dark, much less mid-dogfight, and the last thing we need is for a lost pilot to fly over an enemy destroyer or SAM site.

Man, I had a crazy time at the club last night, having gone out with some of the young nurses who arrived in town from Brazil recently. I won't tell the squadron Major about that though as she'd tear a strip off me, hell, I don't think she'd even let me do this flight if she knew how late I was up last night...

Anyways, I digress. This tasking was initially meant for the R-99's out at O'Higgins but apparently something came up and their airframes weren't ready for a flight so close to the FLOT yet. Due to that, I suppose the order for this recon/ELINT flight fell back to our RC-12 Squadron. Captain Bentai wasn't caffeinated enough to drag himself out of his cot in the on-call barracks, so I eagerly put myself forward to take this flight. This is my shot! I haven't got a chance to take the role of Pilot of an RC-12 proper since this war started. The higher ups keep saying they want to leave these more dangerous taskings to our more experienced pilots, but come on! Don't they know who my uncle is?! It's 5 PM local time on the 23rd. After briefing the ELINT guys on the flight plan and the location of the Lav at the back of the plane, we fired up the RC-12 and did our flight checks. I guess there was a big operation by the fighter pilots only an hour or so ago, so we've been advised to play it safe and the ELINT guys are going to be doing some BDA as part of the flight. After I used some of my pocket bottle of eau de cologne as a solvent by spraying it into the cracks around the A/P buttons , I finally got the A/P buttons to work. As as a bonus, a certain malingering smell was also covered up too. This made the rest of the flight much more smooth.

The PLA are just across the Strait there now. By this point, the ELINT guys have ordered everything with an electrical signal turned off except the essential avionics required to fly. The nerve of this guy, telling ME, the CAPTAIN, to put my own phone in Airplane Mode.

The rest of the flight went by uneventfully. We steered well clear of the waypoints near the contact line, and kept a razor watch on the RWR, and listened to the ABM chatter carefully. The ELINT guys requested I do a few loops near Punta Delgada before I returned in so they could home in on some signals out towards the Ocean to the East, but I don't know what came of that. They seemed pretty agitated though.. Anyways, I got the plane back to SAWG, and we landed without issue.

Two ship of Mirage 2000Cs successfully loaded up and launched without incident, travelling to our BARCAP route along the border of the same fence and within support range of the strikers.

We were vectored onto two bogeys, which turned out to be PLAAF J-7s and in fact was a three ship in close formation. We successfully engaged and downed all three enemy fighters, but expended most of our munitions and returned to base to re-arm and re-fuel.

After topping the tanks, we returned to our CAP route for a short time, however the skies were clear and we returned home a second time without engaging any additional enemies and without incident. All in all, a solid mission.

Interservice Fighter Trainee Competition Announced

While fighting rages in the southern parts of Chile and Argentina, the regions in the north remain quiet - for now. The allied nations are taking advantage of the relative peace to train up new pilots in the difficult art of military aviation. To this end, we have partnered with the UK MOD International Defense Training program, who are sending us Qualified Weapons Instructors - the elite British counterpart to the American TOPGUN Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructors and USAF Weapons School - to assist in our education.

The flight training will be centered at the Argentine Naval Aviation School (Escuela de Aviación Naval) at Punta Indio Naval Air Base, near Buenos Aires, as well as the Argentine Military Aviation School (Escuela de Aviación Militar) near Córdoba. Instructors will be providing coaching on all aspects of advanced fighter aviation, but promise a particular focus on ballistic fundamentals. To accommodate the rapid lesson schedule, the 6th Air Brigade bombing range at Tandil Military Air Base has been reserved for daily usage by the QWIs and the larger International Maritime Training Team.

Not only is this program expected to generate much-needed additional pilots, improve Air Force and Navy combat proficiencies, and demonstrate esprit de corps, but it is the hope of SCAD that a showcase of excellence in this contest may attract attention to our cause on the part of the United Kingdom. This could result in the delivery of additional military aid - such as stockpiled Phantom F-4s that the Ministry of Defense has been recently offering to various global partners.

Trainee pilots are encouraged communicate their interest with their squadron commanders and coordinate with each other, and expect to demonstrate their prowess via the following two exam challenges:

quote:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swIIAV6faYU

Trick - Open format. Make a video of a bombing trickshot or anything that looks cool, judged purely on style. Use any plane

Threat - Accuracy contest. Use his bombing range mission to perform a series of 4 drops, best average wins. Use A-4E

Winners will receive a DCS F-4E Crew Pack from Heatblur.

The contest closes Nov. 30th, 2023

Naval Situation Report 24 FEB 10

The recent success of Operation Milk Run is to be lauded. Ford 1 was able to patrol the strait, discover a large and previously-undetected littoral fleet, attack and effectively destroy a Type 054a frigate that was anchoring the defense of the Magdalena Channel, as well as damage the radar of a separate corvette, then discover and attack a PLAN tug and nascent Silkworm anti-ship site. Though the nominal target of the mission, the PLA replenishment ship Qinghaihu, was not within range - it and other cargo vessels were detected moving north towards Punta Arenas and may be subjected to further attacks before they are able to make delivery. While a pair of Skyhawks were destroyed during the mission, with one pilot killed instantly by a ship-launched missile, the other pilot was able to eject after an unsuccessful carrier landing and was quickly recovered by the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo.

Ford A-4 Skyhawks conducting a force recon flight along the Magellan Strait discovered a group of PLAN troops once again attempting to set up anti-ship assets on the Isla Carlos III. The flight attacked the troops, who in turn are believed to have surrendered to the CNS Aspirante Isaza corvette that was sent to patrol nearby. Argentine Marines aboard the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo are ordered to use their Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopters to secure Isla Carlos III POWs, and assess the Silkworm weapons cache and other captured supplies. If possible, the reinforced marine company shall use the Silkworms and their organic air defense assets to defend the island against further attacks from the southeast.

CNS Carrera is ordered to join the CNS O’Higgins and sail together, and continue interdicting the Magdalena supply line. They are advised of the latest maritime intel, and in particular the course and heading of two anti-submarine Grisha-type corvettes believed to be sailing nearby. Ambushing these ships may help to deplete the 2nd PLAN Fleet and spread out their patrol resources. They cannot keep losing ships for long without losing their effective naval presence and being forced to withdraw.

Having consolidated with its surface action group, the recently-refitted Brazilian fleet is already reporting supply shortages. The captain of the NAel Minas Gerais is asked to clarify the situation. They are ordered to convene with the nearby Supply Fleet East and resolve the logistical issues. Both Argentine and Brazilian Grumman S-2 Trackers are available for carrier onboard delivery if critical resupply is required. The fleet must be ready to sail and fight.

The crew of the cargo ship NDCC Almirante Saboia “Sierra” were rescued, but the ship remains at sea. By a stroke of luck, the ARA Alférez Sobral aviso tug (made famous in the Falklands War ) was based in Ushuaia but happened to be at sea when the PLA attack occurred - scheduled to exchange maritime patrol zones in February 2010 with the Mar de Plata-based ARA Francisco de Gurruchaga. The two ships have reported in near Puerto Deseado and are ordered to sail to the “Sierra” and take her into dock at the nearby Punta Quilla (Puerto Santa Cruz).

Sailors, marines, and aviators of SACA: You all are doing a good job out there. Keep up the hard work. We've put the PLA on the back-foot, and with any luck we should have several days of peace to regroup before launching further offensives. Enjoy your rest, you've earned it.

«Irse a pique antes que rendir el pabellón!«

New Naval orders executed. The Main Chilean fleet is back at the y-intersection, and CNS Aspirante Isaza used its guns to wreck the remaining harbor tug and nascent wilk worm site. The site is now completely demolished after some gunfire.

CNS Carrera and CNS O'Higgins both are back near the outlet of Cockburn Channel. Do you have any patrol or movement orders for the subs beyond this?

The supply status of the Brazilian Fleet is red due to expending most of its missiles in the fleet action two days earlier, but the supply status of the Brazilian Air Wing aboard NAeL Minas Gerais itself is green.

I apologize for not responding to this earlier.

The gameplay design was that if medical shortage is faced, the Army will need to obtain alternate treatment locations. However, the medical resupply via the 747 charter was more than adequate to bring more supplies and relieve the pressure on the hospitals.

Once again sorry for not clarifying earlier.

Right!

The flight could clearly observe the 5th and 3rd Brigade's movement on AO Bolt. Map markers updated.

In addition, several PLAN Probables have been moved to the true markers, as your flight received both visual and ELINT confirmation of their location.

Third, on the shore west of Punta Arenas, your flight confirmed:

1: the location of the cargo/littoral ships, which are now true markers.
2: Red circle, large number of radio traffic and comm equipment
3: orange marker as movement of trucks
4: a new contact, a type 054 Frigate

Subject: Strategic Assessment and Future Operational Recommendations

Commander,

In light of the recent operation, I propose a more focused approach with our limited forces. The dispersed nature of the recent attack across the entire enemy front yielded limited tangible results in proportion to our losses. To optimize our resources, I recommend concentrating our efforts on specific enemy Brigade (BDE) formations.

The successful west-to-east attack by friendly forces against the 4th Brigade demonstrated promising results, with fewer surface-to-air missile (SAM) threats encountered. This success could be indicative of a viable tactic to exploit in future engagements. I suggest a thorough review of this approach to extract valuable insights and replicate its execution in subsequent operations.

Awaiting your guidance on the next steps.

Respectfully,

Admiral Ileana Maria Sampaio

Major Montana,

Thank you for your ASMO report. I appreciate your attention to detail and your recommendations for our further success. I would ask your office to look into the following concerns:

1. You identified the recent attack on the 4th Brigade as demonstrating promising results. Of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th PLA brigades operating near Punta Arenas, which brigade appears to be the most threatening and which is the most vulnerable?

2. The 6th Brigade appears to be mobilizing to the west of Punta Arenas. Are they attempting a flanking maneuver into the Skyring Sound via the Fitzroy Channel? What is your estimate of their possible objectives? How could our forces act to stop them from achieving those objectives?

3. Your office identified a connection between two PLAN corvettes and the successful attack against a PLAN frigate that was anchoring their defense of the Magdalena Channel supply route. Can you clarify the nature of this connection? Was a senior officer or VIP aboard that frigate, and attempting to withdraw, or is there a different sort of link? I would welcome additional investigation into this report.

4. What is the current status of the Tierra del Fuego occupation? Has there been any contact made with special forces teams, HUMINT, or local resistance forces?

5. I would appreciate a report on our own force vulnerabilities. Where are we most open to attack, and what can we do to mitigate those losses?

Earnestly awaiting your response,

Adm. Sampaio

Ain't much to do
'round here.

Alright, listen up.

Ground crews are loading your aircraft for CAP now. Intelligence suggests a major air attack is coming soon. Prepare to launch immediately after this briefing ends.

We will be executing DCA ACTION PLAN - BRAZO RICO. It is as follows:

=============================================================
=============================================================
=============================================================
DCA Action Plan (CODEWORD: BRAZO RICO)
This is a generalized plan for emergency DCA operations.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
  • Aircraft on station set up CAP at nearest PRIORITY DEFENSE AREA and defend your position until directed to do otherwise by ABM. Engage at flight lead's discretion.
  • Launching aircraft proceed to assigned AO and contact ABM
  • Relieving aircraft proceed to nearest AO and contact ABM

PRIORITY DEFENSE AREA (PDA)
Priority defense areas are where we want to establish minimum fighter coverage as reinforcements begin to launch and our air superiority radius increases. Aircraft rotating out for ream/refuel are to proceed to the nearest suitable friendly airfield.

PDA areas are as follows:
  1. CNS Aspirante Isaza
  2. 11th BDE
  3. Puerto Natales, Rio Turbio
  4. Rio Gallegos

OPERATIONAL AREAS AND OBJECTIVES
Operational areas and the objectives within those areas are detailed below:
  1. SOUTH CAP - PDA 1 | AO DART
  2. WEST CAP - PDA 2,3 | AO BOLT
  3. EAST CAP - PDA 2,4 | AO ARROW

:siren: Operations in each AO are coordinated by an ABM on their own UHF frequency
:siren: ABMs are responsible for transferring aircraft between one another to achieve balanced defense across all AOs.
:siren: SOUTH CAP AIRCRAFT: When RTB, establish contact with WEST CAP before proceeding north to avoid fratricide. Be aware of WEST CAP aircraft if engaging near the north west corner of the MAXIMUM RISK BOUNDARY.

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
  • VISUAL IDENTIFICATION OR ABM DECLARE HOSTILE REQUIRED FOR ALL ENGAGEMENTS ON FRIENDLY SIDE OF MAXIMUM RISK BOUNDARY
  • All aircraft on beyond the MAXIMUM RISK BOUNDARY are considered hostile by default.
  • Aircraft engaging enemies beyond the MAXIMUM RISK BOUNDARY carry exponentially increasing risk of enemy SAM and fratricide. Proceed with extreme caution and do so while in contact with ABM.
=============================================================
=============================================================
=============================================================

FLIGHT ASSIGNMENTS (local)
pre:
2000 - COLT 1: WEST CAP
     - UZI 1: EAST CAP

2200 - PANTHER 1: WEST CAP
     - PONTIAC 1: EAST CAP

2215 - FORD 1: SOUTH CAP

Today's operation was brutal, as low light night operations and planes from the cold war struggled, especially against PLAAF J-11s with R-77s.
Losses were significant, and enemy strike aircraft were able to launch anti-radiation missiles into friendly ships and SAM sites. One friendly KC-135 was lost to a J-11 that was able to penetrate all air defences.

However, it appears that most of hostile J-11s were eventually attrited, too.

As established in the prior lore, a map was found from a Chinese officer on Falklands. As the SBS got back on boat, the Agincourt sailed north to establish a link with the UK's home to inform that a new type anti-satellite system installation was possibly the Chinese plan. It would be placed somewhere in Angola to offer a position to intercept a significant number of overflying military and spy satellites UK and the US were using.

HMS Agincourt managed to transmit this info, and then it turned back and headed South again. The UK tried to get intelligence from the area, but jamming and the risk of satellite interception for lower orbit overflys meant that while the location was narrowed down, the precise spot is not known.

Angola is under the PLA's control, with a large number of South African, Kenyan, and Namibian units having retreated together to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, closer to the French colonies and the expeditionary french troops.

As small special forces team was in South-Eastern Cameroon when the UK got into contact with it. The 1st Commando of the Namibian Special Forces has a team, ready to respond. The team intends to travel through Gabon, and then the DRC and make its way to Northern Occupied Angola. They will meet a small team of Royal Navy's Special Boat Service in the town of N'dalatando, and traveling further South, a team of South African SF in Waku Kungo. There, they will set out towards the town of Chongoroi, Angola.

This is where our Arma 3 mission will take place, with the heroes of the story being Namibian SF from before the 2012-funding update. A mix of Pact and NATO gear, old and new. Today, in 2023, the Namibian SF looks like anyone else, with FAST-helmets, MultiCam, and M4s. Boring. Back in 2010, they still had more unique gear with various AKs and RPGs and using a 3-color desert uniform.
The team is made of grizzled veterans of WW3, ready to tackle any challenge. Veterans of fighting in DRC, Namibia, Angola, and South Africa against the PLA, they're eager to strike back at the enemy.

Welcome to Chongoroi, Angola.

The Arma 3 map for the curious is here: https://jetelain.github.io/Arma3Map/chongo.html
It will be part of the mod pack as you download it.

Your team will arrive to the northern edge of the map. Your task is to locate the PLA Anti-Satellite Facility with its radars, comm towers, and silos, and destroy it.
In addition, blowing up the likely attack helicopters at the Chongoroi airport will be useful to avoid a heavy QRF response.
It is known that PLA uses the airport for bringing in supplies and troops, so various convoys or officer vehicles are likely traveling between the site and the airport, and could be used for finding the location itself.

Furthermore, the PLA maintains a small garrison nearby and does patrols. It is unlikely that they are well-prepared for an assault this far back behind the lines, so the opposition will not be impossible to defeat with surprise.

Major Yooper, you're the commander of this operation. You have the Ranger group of the 1st Commando of Namibian SF, divided into the direct action Romeo team, and the scout team Juliet. Juliet team is wearing civilian clothing, and using an inconspicuous vehicle. Their helmets and body armor are in the vehicle trunk, as are their weapons.

Romeo team is kitted out for direct action.
Assisting you is Sierra 1, a two-man sniper team from South Africa, and a four-person team from the UK's Royal Navy Special Boat Squadron, called Sierra-2.

Each team will have a real-time SIGINT-tablet that will warn the operator of Chinese vehicles, and can be used to avoid patrols and bases.
Juliet team however can pass enemy troops under cover and provice scouting information to higher. The team's four operators are not only in Civilian clothng, but fluent in English, Afrikaans, German, Otijherero, Oswiwambo, and Setswana. At least! They will be more than competent to navigate any encounter with locals, and to avoid suspicion.

Locations of two PLA garrisons are known, as is the airport. Rest is up to you, Major Yooper. Find that site, and destroy it. Good luck.

ARMA SUNDAY MISSION

OVERALL GOAL DESTROY ASAT COMMS FACILITY

COMMANDER INTENT Scout area prior to initiating hostilities. Use team JULIET's language and culture skills to take advantage of Angolans unhappy about PLA occupation. Once JULIET has recon'd civilian areas, and ROMEO-SIERRA has searched, then initiate hostilities by engaging QRF airbase followed by Garrison. Then form up to destroy ASAT.

COMMANDERS NOTE : This is a big AO. I'm not going to give you detailed orders, it won't work. You will have to use best initiative to try to follow intent. We may need to "acquire" civilian vehicles.

1. We move together to this point and split up.
2. ROMEO goes west, searches up near NW FOREST for ASAT Site.
3. Holds near crossroads and waits for other teams to finish.
4-5-6. JULIET scouts ahead for SIERRA and helps them get through hostile territory.
7. SIERRA scouts area near Katumbi Gulch and takes up overwatch in a solid position. Maybe at 7, maybe at a different spot.
7.5 JULIET cruises about and talks to locals and scopes out RANGOLAN RAVINE.
8. Once all teams have recon'd sites, we initiate hostilities and engage the QRF at SW AIRBASE.

SIERRA engages the garrison while ROMEO moves in from the WEST and flanks the Chinese garrison.

After this we form up on a hopefully discovered ASAT site and gently caress it up.

This is a big AO. It will behoove you to prepare to act on your own with limited command oversight. If I'm 4 miles away I can't advise you on the best hill to use. Find it and use it.

Game master perspective from today's mission:

Very limited success, some damage inflicted on missile systems.
Main compound undamaged.

Romeo team lost in assault on airfield, some unknown number of stragglers escaped by themselves to the border.

Sierra 1 and Sierra 2 lost in combat, Sierra 2 was killed after placing explosives on missiles, providing the only success of the day.

All of Juliet team managed to escape to eastern Angola alive.

Yeah, the airfield should be considered out of action for at least a short time, valuable cargo plane destroyed on takeoff, heavy infrastructure damage, and any regional intel gathered. Calling it a failure is unfair, even with the losses to the team.

The destruction of PLAAF and PLAN assets at the airport certainly helps, especially to the eventual return to this objective as it allows for more freedom of movement due to the difficulty with which PLA can reinforce and patrol the area with degraded air assets.

But the objective of the SOF raid was not going to an airport and blowing infrastructure and planes up. That objective was simply a supporting goal to better achieve the primary goal.
Which was to destroy the PLA Anti-Satellite missiles and launch equipment. This was only achieved in a limited fashion by Sierra 2 managing to blow up the extra missiles on a truck, no number of ruined trucks or troops at the airport will directly change this goal's status.

Mission start was uneventful. We proceeded south on one of the big roads as instructed by commander, and met a civilian in a small town firehouse. After a conversation, civilian indicated Chinese trucks to the east and a checkpoint to the north. We marked the checkpoint on map and proceeded east to a hill observing a valley.

Here we detected chinese trucks driving back and forth on a road, and reported those up. Detected one Mi-8 flight far away in the horizon, after which we checked out a few nearby towns, all abandoned.

Eventually we linked up with Sierra 1 on a hill North-East of the detected missile site after Sierra teams found it. We observed PLA movements and waited for the Romeo teams to degrade PLA airport in the town of Chongoroi, but eventually lost all contact with Romeo after receiving reports of heavy contact.

Juliet team assumed command of the western AO, and instructed to narrow down goals to a limited attack on the silo itself, getting into heavy contact. We ended up covering Sierra 2's assault, and managed to draw fire away from them as they placed explosives. Shortly afterwards Sierra 2 was overrun and killed, as was Sierra 1. At that point Juliet loaded up on the Toyota Hilux, and made an escape to the eastern edge of map, judging north to be too far.

Events on map, with route traced with green line:

1: observed the town, then met with a local and got intel of PLA movements
2: observed Rangolan Ravine from a hill, detecting various movements and relaying them forward
3: discovered town to be empty with no sign of Chinese activity besides a convoy that passed us in the town, driving through it
4: avoided further PLA patrols and met up with Sierra 1, observing the compound found at Katumbi Gluch, red X-circle. Observed some 30-40 minutes. Silo site as secondary to South east, and main site with 40-50 troops, solar farms, watch towers, and trucks and helipads. Several Mi-8s brought troops. Various radar and radio equipment.
5: after Romeo teams were lost, attempted to link up with Sierra 1 and 2 to assault the silo, but became overwhelmed. Supported Sierra 2s assault.
6: After Sierra 1 and 2 teams lost, made an escape under fire towards eastern border

Juliet team after getting to eastern border of map, where it becomes endless flatlands, before disconnecting.

AAR - ROMEO ACTUAL

Teams advanced to the first split point while Juliet did some initial recon. In our first hold we chatted with a very sketchy local who wanted payment for his dead goat or something. We told him about a wrecked truck back down the road that he could have. This did not endear us to this local. We continued south to the river bend and traversed west. Gronank and his team went into the NW FOREST and checked for radio signals. Meanwhile the other parts of ROMEO moved west and observed a PLA truck in the town. We took cover and recon'd the area until Gronank and his team returned.

We advanced south to take cover behind a ridge line only to discover it was actually a gulch. All three teams took up positions and prepared to advance when a PLA Patrol sniffed us out and we began to engage from an inferior position. Our initial recon plans turned into a running battle that ended poorly for us. In hindsight we should have disengaged and used our vehicle mobility to egress the area and come in from another vector. This error is squarely on my shoulders as we still had the ability to maneuver and did not use this.

Overall command worked fine, and the use of the text chat made coordination much easier as voice comms became garbled with multiple speakers. SIERRA and JULIET basically worked independently, and given the complexity of the AO I am unsure if we would have been able to coordinate on any objective.

Things to do differently next time
1. Use our mobility to our advantage.
2. Use urban areas as cover. We could have gotten a lot closer to the air base and had cover had we used Chongoroi city proper.
3. Sent JULIET through Chongoroi to evaluate if we could have advanced through the city.
4. Basic driver training with vehicles, including tire changing procedure.
5. Get Ovi a heated cat bed.

What Worked Well
1. SIERRA and JULIET operated indepedently and found the critical targets.
2. ROMEO advanced in good order to Chongoroi.
3. Drawing on the map and sharing positions made coordination immensely easier.

A shout out to Radintorov for being the sole surviving member of ROMEO only to get wounded by friendly fire during the egress.

I'm typing some expectations here, just so that we can be on the same page going forward. I'd guesstimate that both in Arma 3 and DCS, we will take the dial of nerdiness and click it one step higher from here on out. To not feel like we're just pulling the rug, the next Arma 3 mission will serve as a sort of onboarding activity where we'll have a training map open before go time, and we'll help anyone get ready.

DCS Expectations:

In playing DCS missions as part of The Long Afternoon War-lore, the emphasis is on correct procedures and a semi-serious environment involving both planning and execution. While fun is important, the primary source is correct procedure, and action may not always be guaranteed. Survival, risk analysis, and adapting goals on the fly are crucial. Losing is allowed and expected, and the focus extends beyond high-speed action to encompass realistic and believable scenarios. Vaha, myself, the mission designer, prioritizes military doctrine and procedure while acknowledging that the missions may not suit everyone. Expectations for DCS mission days include the ability to use radios, follow leadership without constant guidance, understanding one's role, and having read the briefing.

Arma Expectations:

In Arma 3 missions, the focus is on preserving teams and individuals, following orders, and avoiding freelancing. The expectation is for participants to have basic knowledge of Arma, including controls, the use of TFAR radio, knowledge of weapons, map familiarity, and understanding miscellaneous systems. The mindset should revolve around teamwork and discipline, with an emphasis on not rushing off due to boredom. The mission organizers, Elendil, Zeph, and Jerik, run Antistasi and Liberation regularly, providing low-stakes opportunities for players to familiarize themselves with Arma. Efforts will be made to offer preparation for complex systems that may appear in missions. Respawns will be highly limited, likely narrowed down into a single group respawn at middle point.

To achieve these expectations, participants are encouraged to engage with the community on Discord, practice on GoonTTI servers, and ensure readiness for mission days by preparing during the week leading up to it. Air Goons provides various resources, including practice servers and a dynamic campaign, to help players get acquainted with mod and control issues.

^^^ no :evilbuddy:

Here's an AAR from the last ARMA mission. CoreySmash wrote nearly all of of it but as an officer I am taking all the credit (and added my own details).

PATROLREP - Sierra 2
LINE 1 – DATE AND TIME: 0700 Local Time (Angola), 25 February 2010
LINE 2 – UNIT: Special Boat Service (SBS), UK Armed Forces
LINE 3 - DPT & RTN DTG: 0700 - 1000, 25 February 2010
LINE 4 - ROUTE: Patrol initiated from the northern sector near the duck icon, followed the purple route eastward hitting checkpoints 4, 5, and 6. The patrol then moved south to Katumbi Gulch to establish Final Firing Positions (FFPs) with a clear Line of Sight (LoS) on the enemy encampment and launch site.
LINE 5 – CHECK POINTS: Checkpoints 4, 5, and 6 on the purple route.
LINE 6 - RESULTS: Patrol did not achieve intended objectives despite a heroic effort from S2 actual. All members of Sierra 2 (S2) were KIA following the engagement with the enemy patrol and the successful destruction of enemy infrastructure.
LINE 7 - CONDITION OF PATROL: All members of the patrol were KIA. A post-action review identified that the S2 marksman's sidearm, a Glock, was on 'SAFE' during the critical moment of the compromise.
LINE 8 - SALUTE:

Size: 50+ infantry with assorted small arms and anti-tank launchers.
Activity: Personnel mostly stationed at posts, with some in a state of rest. Reinforcements observed arriving and departing via medium lift transport trucks. Low alertness level overall; no perimeter patrols detected.
Location: Katumbi Gulch, vicinity of 09 easting.
Unit/Uniform: People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops.
Time: Encounter occurred around 0945L on 25 February 2010.
Equipment: Small arms, man-portable anti-tank launchers, defensive works suggesting a mortar pit, potential machine-gun bunkers, and a vertical launch platform for Anti-Air/Anti-Space missiles, and at least 2 emplaced Anti-Air guns. Additional observation includes an enemy helicopter, likely a Mi-8 HIP transport, observed on three occasions overflying us and dropping troops off at the launch site.

LINE 9 - BDA ENEMY: After the ambush that took out Sierra 2-2 and 2-4, 2-1 and 2-3 eliminated two members of the enemy patrol before egressing in the truck to their previous position overlooking the launch site in preparation for a possible assault, and eliminated the two remaining members of the enemy patrol trailing them. After observing two truckloads of enemy infantry patrolling away from their position in cover, 2-1 took the initiative and, exploiting the gap in the enemies defenses, ran to the missile transport vehicle and placed satchel charges with a short timer. The explosion got the attention of a passing patrol that had moved in position behind 2-1 blocking his egress route. A firefight ensued, resulting in 2-1 and 2-3 KIA, as well as 3-4 enemy KIA.
LINE 10 - ROUTE RECON RPT: Villages encountered along the route appeared to be abandoned; however, the structures are intact and accurately represented on current maps. Also observed groups of civilians driving around in trucks.
LINE 11 – NARRATIVE: Navigation achieved through dead-reckoning, elevation measurements with a Kestrel device, and RF direction finding. The absence of a working vehicle odometer and GPS presented challenges. Recommendations for improvement include defining clear roles for team members and establishing a clear chain of command using the NATO "SMESC" format.
LINE 12 – AUTHENTICATION: Overall our squad did well in navigation and were able to figure out precisely where they were every time they stopped within a minute. Sierra 2-4 (Davin) with the EM Wand did a great job finding signals which led the team to the enemy base at the same time Sierra 1 got visual.

Sierra 2-1 giving an Epic Speech. Everyone stood up and clapped.

Capítan Larrain of the O'Higgins reports that the submarine wolf pack has assembled and they are ready and eager to engage. Military intelligence has indicated that there may be a connection between the destruction of the Type 054a frigate, and the unexpected maneuvers of the pair of Grisha ASW corvettes that have been detected exiting the Cockburn Channel. While they could simply be patrolling the supply route, the twin ships may be evacuating a senior officer or Chinese VIP. We are attempting to better understand the situation, but we cannot afford the opportunity to strike a blow against PRC leadership to slip through our fingers.

The CNS Carrera and CNS O'Higgins are ordered to quietly slip into the expected path of the corvettes along the resupply route and ambush them. Attack the ships, then escape to the southwest and regroup near WP GRAU. Be aware that if the ships are carrying important passengers, then they will likely be escorted by - or meeting with - additional forces. Use your best judgment regarding what is possible without overly jeopardizing our submarines. We must maintain the submarine threat, for we cannot afford to allow the PLA navy to operate freely.

In addition to the surface fleet threats, our captains should expect anti-submarine helicopters to be launched against them - either from the corvettes themselves, the Ushuaia Airport some 250 km to the east, or the 2nd PLAN fleet some 300 km to the southeast. The nearby continental shelf should offer a good drop-off thermocline to provide cover for an escape. This is perhaps why the Chinese cargo vessels have been sailing so closely to the shoreline. The Combined Armada will consider mining the harbor area - either by air or by submarine - to force them further out to sea or blockade the Magdalena Channel route entirely. But for now, focus on the immediate task at hand.

Good hunting.
