One day this summer, the internet personality Adin Ross switched on his camera and started broadcasting himself live to thousands of fans, sipping a Yerba Mate drink and nodding along to Lil Uzi.

Mr. Ross soon cut the music and started talking, assuring his fans that he would livestream Jake Paul’s upcoming boxing match, even though it would violate copyright laws. “I’ll pay the fines,” he promised them. Later, he streamed himself playing online slot machines and blackjack on a gambling site, Stake. Once, he streamed pornography. He has hosted Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist, and Andrew Tate, the online influencer known for his misogyny who faces human-trafficking charges. As Mr. Ross streams, his viewers post a torrent of messages in his channel’s chat feature — some celebrating him, some abusing him with slurs.

Welcome to life on Kick, the Wild West of livestreaming — where seemingly any kind of content goes. Since it went live late last year, the upstart platform has made waves in the world of livestreaming, long dominated by Twitch, which is owned by Amazon. Today, Kick has 21 million accounts, nearly twice as many as just four months ago, and has carved out a niche for itself as the latest home for the fringes of young male viewers who spend a significant amount of time online.

i forgot to add that chat found the sex worker's contact info and then called her to tell her she was A) being livestreamed and 2) there were people in the other room, two facts she didn't know or consent to, and immediately left

so like, this is a pretty slam dunk case of "a sex worker was exploited by horrible people and faced some punishment for it" which doesn't seem v complex

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/internet/ice-poseidon-sam-pepper-sex-worker-arrest-australia-kick-stream-rcna117961 posted:

A recording of the livestream was reviewed by NBC News in which Denino and Pepper appeared to be playing a prank on a sex worker as part of an online challenge, though the identities of several of the participants are unknown to NBC News. The suggestion that the pair hire a sex worker to create content came from audience members in the livestream’s chat section.

Denino and Pepper did not immediately provide comments in response to outreach from NBC News.

The pair traveled to Australia as part of a series where they participated in viewer challenges, according to statements they made in their recorded streams. For one month, the two men would begin each day with zero dollars, and earn money based on how many fans recognized them in the street, according to previous videos posted by the streamers. They would then gamble that money live on stream.

In the video, Denino and Pepper asked a sex worker over the phone if she was comfortable being filmed, and she said she was for an extra fee. Denino and Pepper had a third person meet her there and engage in sexual activity with her.

Viewers watched the encounter unfold via cameras pointed at a sofa in a rental unit. The person meeting the woman pointed the camera out to her. She again consented to being filmed.

After several minutes of the encounter, the woman then said she received a message from a friend who warned her the meeting was a set-up: that the two other men — Denino and Pepper — who the man said were sleeping in another room were actually watching the stream.

The woman became visibly uncomfortable and tried to leave, but the man blocked her, telling her she had already been paid. She protested, calling the situation “creepy,” and tried again to leave.

“Why is it creepy?” the man asked, before insisting it was just the two of them in the apartment — even though Denino and Pepper were in the next room.

Eventually, the woman left the apartment while the man followed her.

After she left, police appeared to be waiting for Denino and Pepper outside. Viewers reacted with shock in the live chat as the stream captured the pair’s subsequent arrest.

It's cause it's sweeter. Lactose free milk is made with enzymes added that essentially pre-digest the lactose for you, and what it's broken down into is sugar.

e: incidentally I recall watching a youtube cooking video about making your own oatmilk that uses this method too. The commercial stuff is sweater and more full bodied or w/e compared to trying to do it with like a blender and sieve because they also use enzymes to partially digest the stuff, breaking down the complex carbs into sugars. It's possible to do at home too of course, but if you've ever tried following simple online recipes and found that what you ended up was nothing like what you bought in the store it's why.

lactose is already a sugar, specifically a glucose and galactose stuck together. you don't have as sensitive taste buds for lactose as you do for glucose so it's sweeter when breaking it in half

Yeah I didn't mean to imply it was less healthy, the breakdown is just what would happen in your body anyways as far as I understand it. It simply makes it taste sweeter.

I avoid all those weird alternative milks because the ingredients lists are usually full of garbage and probably worse than just cows milk.

The only one I found that seems ok is Elmhurst as they claim they only have 3 ingredients (water, nuts/oats, salt). Which also means little to no sugar too. They do add sugar to their barista versions but not as much as brands like Oatly.

it doesn't mean anything other than a personal anecdote but I was at my storage unit today for the first time in awhile picking up Christmas decorations and man, a solid 1/2 of units seem to be vacant which is pretty crazy and dire. I had a very minor waitlist when I signed up back in 2017 and has always been a solid 90%+ occupancy up until now. also funny enough, my storage rent has barely budged in like the 8 years i've been there, started off at $40 back in 2017 and is only $50/mo in 2023, which is very reasonable for how relatively large it is. self storage units like these also tends to be mostly lower-income people so I don't know if all the low-income people have been swept away or what

Will you stop going crazy in there?
There are tons of brands of oat/almond/whatever milk that have nothing in them except water, salt, and the primary ingredient. You usually have to look for something on the bottle that says "plain" or "no added ingredients," but even most of the store brands around here have versions like that.

yeah i dunno if it just means more and more have got gentrified and swept out or just particularly bad at advertising themselves since mine is a local mom n pop type. i was just looking at the $PSA quarterly report to see if it was just mine or not and its always funny when they do these weasel words:

quote:

Revenues for the Same Store Facilities increased 2.5%
or $21.1 million in the three months ended September 30, 2023 as compared to the same period in 2022, due primarily to
higher realized annual rent per occupied square foot, partially offset by a decline in occupancy....
....
The increase in realized annual rent per occupied square foot in the three and nine months ended September 30,
2023 as compared to the same periods in 2022 was due to cumulative rate increases to existing long-term tenants over the
past twelve months, partially offset by a 16.0% and 12.8% decrease in average rates per square foot charged to new tenants
moving in, respectively. The growth rate in realized annual rent per occupied square foot has decelerated since the second
half of 2022 from lower move-in rates and increased promotion discounts offered in order to replace tenants that vacate
....
Demand in the summer months of 2023 was impacted by the lower home-moving activities due to limited housing
market transaction volumes....Demand fluctuates due to various local and regional factors, including the overall
economy...

We expect weaker industry-wide demand in the remainder of 2023 as compared to 2022 driven by a weaker
macroeconomic outlook and more limited home-moving activities, with move-out activities and occupancy levels returning
to pre-2020 levels. To mitigate the negative impact of macroeconomic challenges, we will continue to support demand
levels for our self-storage facilities with increased marketing expense, lowering rental rates to new customers, and
increased promotional discounting. As a result, we expect revenue growth to decline significantly through the course of
2023 as compared to high levels of growth in 2022 and 2021, including the potential for year-over-year declines in revenue
in the fourth quarter of 2023
apparently occupancy at corporate spots is like 92%+ still though so just a random meaningless anecdote.

If you want to live in a smaller city or out in the wilderness, I can understand the appeal. I prefer either being in the middle of a big dense city or living in relative isolation.

Outside of a few choice districts, Seattle and the immediate area are sprawling suburbia with poor transit but all the big city problems. Compared to the bay good food is hard to find, quality food being ridiculously expensive, and the colder climate makes for less social people and less stuff to do. Park culture, for example, exists here for like one month of the year. I grew up in WA and thought I wouldn't get affected by the weather, but was surprised to get serious SAD. If you want a social life, you're either cabbing or driving between places of interest, which takes time and money and traffic here sucks, so you're probably not going out as much or are doing so mostly sober.

If I did it again I'd live in an apartment somewhere downtown, it would have made it much more enjoyable though financially no different than what I left behind... which is why I regret the move and realize I should have stayed. Instead I settled in an up-and-coming area, with light rail promised to be complete for something like five years in a row. So the move ended up tremendously isolating in a suburban lifestyle I loathe, though I'll probably save enough money to make the return possible. Still, I traded a decade of my life for that. Long time to be unhappy.

I can't wait to eventually get out of here.
