The grognards are Napoleonic French and the Bulldogs are Victorian British, when I want Battle of France era French. So that's why for me, personally. My plan is to convert the actual non lasguns, as in I'll use spares to model everything that isn't a las gun, and then if you see a Berthier bolt action rifle or whatever, yeah that's a las gun. I might look into chopping the bolt action rifles down into carbines if it's not a lot of work. Jack B Nimble fucked around with this message at 21:41 on Dec 8, 2023 |

I partially forgot about the Bulldogs, but the French ones do have different helmets. Nothing wrong with options. vv Not to mention the very different time periods and uniform cuts for that part.

How do you combine Napoleonic and WWI. That's a greater gap in time than WWII and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Eschers have lasguns, special weapons etc. Might be tricky for heavy weapons but I'm sure it could be done. The backstory behind Mordant Prime is they’re a mining society that exploits the heck out of the workers and hates mutation which makes it seem perfect for GSC. Colour-wise I really like the dark blue grey armour and fatigues with red accents they have and the art shows a female guardsman who looks very close to an Escher so I figure it’ll be a fun side project.

Gonna be honest since an English writer invented them (Dan Abbnet created them for Necropolis, right?) and they're laid back, easy going, and kind of lazy/undisciplined, but then turn out to have the hearts of lions when the chips are down, I figured they were a stand in for ANZAC troops. Edit - oh hey, apparently he confirmed that in a blog post. So yeah.

There is, in the updated Sabbat World Crusade fluff book they have a decent army rundown, alongside the Hyrkan 8th, Vitrian Dragoons and Volpone Bluebloods. No one has seemingly scanned that though, for obvious reasons I assume.

You just described something pretty similar to my ongoing project. I can say the tau unit range makes a really nice starting point for a high-tech humans total conversion army since the whole Tau army has a kind of humanoid feel to it. There's not really anything with a statline or ability that is wildly alien like you might get if you were trying to use, say, the Tyranid or Necron or Ork codexes, even down to the army playstyle as a whole. I was already committed to other models for the bulk of my units before the current Necromunda kits came out so I'm pretty jealous of you having the opportunity to use those from the outset but I've managed to include some elements of the Van Saar range in places: (Please ignore the rough wip green stuff and filing work, I will tidy that up before I paint them) I'm using these to be counts-as Ethereals, with the idea of them being cyber-warfare specialists with intel and datahacking tools providing the equivalent abilities.

If everyone is weird nobody is weird. Guard anchor the setting. The game needs a Just Some Guys faction to contrast with how inhuman and weird everything else. It's totally fine to not like them though. People like different things. quote:And they're supposed to be the common man of the setting but every single named guard unit, cadian, catachan, krieger, praetorian, valhallan, vostroyan, mordian, tanith, armageddon, tallarn, etc is some special kind of badass with a lasgun. Never once do we get to see the actual throwaway soldier of the imperium that the guard is supposed to be. None of these are particularly special badasses though. They are all Just Some Guys. They're all Just Some Guys in slightly weird uniforms because they're all from different places. And the Cadian models aren't even supposed to always represent Cadians absolutely 100% of the time. The equipment and uniforms used by the Cadians are the closest the Guard has to a standardized uniform. Your Cadian models are supposed to also represent the Sixth Shitfuckers Regiment from planet Nowhere just as much as they represent actual Cadians. Especially now that Cadia is no longer producing more Cadians. That said I find Guard slightly boring to play, which is why I don't really play my Guard army much. I have a giant pile of Guard to build at some point; I plan to make a full regiment of Miasman Redcowls using admech heads, and do up the tanks like the ones in Fury with logs and sandbags and mud all over them. Gonna be like a full-time job though, and I already have two of those at the moment.

That post raging about the Guard being a boring faction completely ignores all the amazing characterful troops they have access too. It ignores how the Guard have Ogryns and Nork fuckin Deddog. It ignores how the Guard have Ratling Snipers. It ignores how the Guard have Sentinel Walkers. It ignores how the Guard have Elysian Drop Troopers who aren't in 10th I think, but are still rad as hell. It ignores how the Guard have Attilan Rough Riders. And it gnores how the Guard have motherfucking Sly Marbo. The Guard are an awesome faction.

Still need to repaint all of my IG armor. Would want to paint them in the same colour scheme as my tiny superheavies, but that's going to be pricey because I'd need to buy a whole bunch of agrax and lahmian medium for the shading. So I might need to reconsider. Although considering I'm painting some Guard as Vietnam Marines I might go down a similar route for that.

I will say that I'm not very inspired to paint the Cadian models. After you get through just the base layer of clothes, armor, and backpack/straps, there's still a whole lot of detail left on them with pouches, buckles, and other knick-knacks that feels like a chore to deal with.

I always just think that my army had Cadian advisors during training, etc. After playing the PC Battlefleet Gothic games (fantastic for lore bits), I like to imagine it was just part of the big chain of planets and systems that fed Cadia as well. Handy for galactic logistics. Also, Aliens is the best movie ever so my squads of ultimate badasses will protect the Imperium.
