Aside from the autopilot repeatedly attempting to murder these sycophantic techbro idiots, that's the most hilarious/baffling part of the video to me.

There's a reason civilian cars have wheels and not that weird rectangle thing you loving dipshit. We've gotten over a century of automobile R&D to look back on. Racecar drivers need to have sophisticated controls at their fingertips when they're driving 200 MPH so there's a purpose for them to have yokes-- they aren't parallel parking and navigating roundabouts. With that thing operating on normal streets you're going to be trying to turn into your driveway and grabbing air when you reach for the wheel because it's turned at the wrong angle or whatever.

He's got ludicrous amounts of money but he's still fundamentally an idiot child using crayons to draw flames and speed lines, lmao

what if we actually spent money on the last mile of fiber/cable so we get good internet?

Those last miles start to add up once you get away from built up areas. There’s a fibre optic cable about a kilometre from my workplace but it was going to cost millions to get a connection to our office. It’s going to be the same for every farmhouse along this stretch of highway. Wireless tech is probably the only cost effective way to do it since no government will ever spend millions to connect a single household or office to the NBN. Given the distances involved you’re probably looking at needing a 50m 5G tower for each building to be connected out here too so I don’t think that’s particularly useful.

There are plenty of fixed wireless solutions that aren't 5G.

MunchE posted:

You're basically paying $100+ a month for LTE speed and performance. It's a good option only if you have no good options. It will require new sats every 5 years forever so your monthly bill has to subsidize 50+ rocket launches a year so the price will never come down, and the coverage of a single sat is about the size of Rhode Island and their bandwidth is low for the scale so they can easily get their bandwidth saturated.

Basically if your options are rural DSL at 3mpbs, Dial up or current satellite then this would be an expensive but likely worthy upgrade. If you have access to literally anything else, Starlink sucks.

It costs marginally more than the fixed wireless we had that stopped working when some trees grew tall enough that we lost line of sight to the phone tower 15km away. Before the fixed wireless they had some lovely connection that literally took all day to pay a bunch of vendors. I’m not sure if there’s an LTE service available at this site but I don’t think so or we’d probably be using that instead.

I don’t know if they’ll be able to make it work for every orbit but apparently SpaceX is planning on sending up replacement satellites as piggy back payloads on their commercial flights to keep the costs down.

I've been a software dev for 14 years and I've had exactly two colleagues that didn't think Musk is a loving moron that would be horrible to work for. One was a sex pest that got fired for groping colleagues and making racist comments at an office party, the other was a super conservative fuckwit from a very rich family who didn't need to work, but he had no life so working ridiculous hours was his way of having social interaction. May also have been a sex pest.
