Can the goon slam band do grind too?

A friendly face.

Meshuggah show report:

Whitechapel: kinda boring, trying to play slam riffs in a deathcore tone? a big ol' meh

In Flames: didn't hate it for TYOOL 2023.. I mean, I only knew 2 songs because I stopped paying attention to them years ago.. Cloud Connected sounded even more hollow than on recording which was disappointing, but Behind Space was pretty awesome. Sucks they don't play anything else older, their sound was on point at least.

Meshuggah: sort of a weaker pit than I've experienced in other Meshuggah shows, but their weakest pits are still better than the majority of other bands. Always amazed at how good Tomas Haake is.

Not really a fan of these bigger shows anymore in a casino where it's loving crowded and beers are at least $12. Looking forward to going to a small club show again in 2 weeks for Outer Heaven & Horrendous.

They've already won the energy contest.

That new Abominable Putridity track is super sick. Angel is easily one of the best current death metal vocalists. Love his throaty purr.

Therion - Leviathan III

This is the return to form that the band's been attempting to pull off for the last few albums. It's not as good as their best work, but it's easily better than anything they've done in the last decade. I tried to pick a highlight but everything's good enough that it doesn't really work.

This album rules and my only possible complaint is that there's so much going on that Mats Levén, the best singer in metal, is buried in everything else. The album doesn't suffer for it.

There's a little bit of everything from Vovin through Gothic Kabbalah happening at the same time, with a healthy infusion of new ideas. It doesn't feel retro or like a throwback, just like Christofer's in that headspace again.

My vinyl of this came Wednesday, two days before the release, so I've had a chance to spend some time with it now. I really like it. I think my highlight is Ayahuasca. Not sure if I like it more than Leviathan I or II, they're all really good in my eyes, but it's definitely good.

And man, Duende is... something. I can't hate it but it may be too weird for me to love it.

Also, Imperialist's EP Quantum is out, and to me it sounds a lot like their first album. I really, really like it.
