Friends don't let friends borrow on credit.
So Darke went on a killing spree that resulted in 5 dead bodies, which he buried. He turned himself in, got questioned, then tried to escape, killing one of the investigating detectives in the process. He successfully escaped and evaded capture by the rest of the team for 6 months. Then he was caught, tried, and executed.

Overall, the timeline isn't that weird. I'm more confused by the part where he turns himself in but then escapes and goes on the lam.

Less turned himself in and more accepted being brought in after being captured, I think.

My impression was the cops think Darke did it but don't have any hard proof. So they ask him to come into the station "to answer a few questions" hoping he kets something slip under questioning. He doesn't think they've got anything on him and comes in without a fight to not be suspicious. Then something goes down that spooks him and he attacks

I'm pretty sure Angel just isn't being very specific with the timeline and when she says "in those days" she's talking about the general time of SL-9. Darke definitely got arrested at Neil Marshall's crime scene after the 6-month chase, but the regular detectives were suspicious of the situation and kept investigating prior to and during Darke's trial. This is Jake's "obsessive" period Angel's talking about and leads to Angel getting fired and Jake demoted.

He escaped after being photographed lying unconscious under Marshall's corpse? In the police department? Plus again the picture used for the six month chase has Neil Marshall in it, clearly alive.

Part 149: Episode 5, Day 3, Investigation: Light Burglary

Before we leave Gumshoe behind, I never looked at his ID. Neither he nor anyone else around has any reaction to it, but we can take a closer look.

Detective Gumshoe isn't very photogenic, is he?

Whatever you do, just don't say that to his face.

Look, his eyes are half shut!

Yeah... and his mouth is half open.

Sound: Light Bulb

And he's got the narrow end of his tie in front.

...

I think this goes beyond being a "photogenic" issue.

...None of those things they mentioned are reflected in that picture at all. Well, off to the Chief's Office!

Music: Silence

And we're back!

Here goes, Mr. Wright.

Sound: Tap 3

Sound: Beepers

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

quote:

Original line: "Open sesame." Cute, but kind of overdone and doesn't really fit Ema.

If anyone finds us now,

Detective Gumshoe's a goner.
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Silence

Gumshoe you big dork, what are you doing in here?

EEEEEEEEK!
Sound: Stab 2

GAAAAAAAAH!
Sound: Damage 2

Sound: Thwap

:allears:

I didn't even know you could slap a ghost.

AAAAH! Detective Gumshoe!
Sound: Whack

What are you doing sneaking up on us like that!?
Sound: Damage 2

Sound: Whack

so I came too.
Sound: Realization

If you're here, then what's the point in giving us your ID card!?
Sound: Whack

Sound: Select Jingle

Hahaha destroying his ID seems a little harsh.

Sound: Damage 2 + Stab 2

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

I hardly ever get a chance to come in here,

Sound: Whack

Besides, we're all in this together now.

You really do want to get fired, don't you?

Sound: Light Bulb

(I've got a bad feeling about this...)

Not me, let's snoop around!

First, Gumshoe has some more to say to us.

That desk on the other side of the room... Was that your sister's?

on that day two years ago.

Is anyone using it now?

No sir. This is entirely Chief Gant's office now.

(That's a strange reason to leave it there...)

Sound: Realization

He told us so himself at our New Year's party.

Now I'm trying to imagine how Gant could be even weirder while drunk.

I see.

So ever since Lana left,

no one ever touches that desk?

Sound: Light Bulb

I guess we won't be lifting two-year-old fingerprints here.

(Still, two years have passed since that incident.)

(There can't possibly be any clues remaining.)

Can I ask you something?
Sound: Realization

Sure.

I mean, that's your only reason for coming here, isn't it?

... Why do you ask?

Gumshoe are you suspecting Gant, too?

...

No, there's no way.

Never mind. Don't worry about it.
Sound: Realization

Okay. Now then, let's look around a bit more.
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Whack
Sound: Damage 2

Huh? What is it?

You don't just let it go at that!

S-sorry. (This guy's starting to get on my nerves.)

You shut your mouth.

Okay, so what's bothering you?

You two don't think...

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

What!?
Sound: Light Bulb

He's right, Mr. Wright! What do we think of him?

(Perhaps it's best I don't divulge my feelings... yet.)
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Well that was fun. Closest the game has really come to confirming our suspicions so far.

A couple items have different reactions now.

This knife belonged to the murderer, Joe Darke, right?

The broken tip of the knife was found inside the victim's body.

(Ever since that case was solved, this knife's been in Detective Goodman's locker.)

Not only that, but it was wrapped in Lana's scarf.

What's even more mysterious,

Answer me that, pal!

Now I know where I saw that before...

Sound: Realization

"Here"? You mean, in the Chief's office?

I used to stare at it while being forced to listen to that organ.

You would stare at it?

Telepathy would be an interesting explanation for how the jar broke...

Your telepathy...

Hey, there it is!
Sound: Light Bulb

Oh yeah.
Sound: Realization

The only thing left to see is Gumshoe's new generic reaction.

If I'm fired, I won't be able to give you any information!

Sound: Whack

You understand, don't you?

Don't be so negative, Detective!

We do want you to share your information, though.

Argh! Got... to stay... positive!
Sound: Realization

Sound: Spritz x 3

With the evidence out of the way, I'm going to move on to the luminol testing next. To my surprise, the suit of armor didn't have any reaction. However we do get something down here...

Sound: Photo Snap x 3

Sound: Stab

Is this from that incident?

It must be. When Prosecutor Neil Marshall was murdered.

(So a murder really did take place here.)

Now let's tear this office apart.

The Chief's organ sure is a sight to behold.

(That's on the 2nd floor, and this is the 15th floor of an entirely different building!)

and makes them listen to the organ for hours.

quote:

The original lines used "him" instead of "them", despite having seen multiple female detectives in this game. Good edit!

What's so bad about that? Music soothes the soul!
Sound: Light Bulb

After that,

(So it's an instrument of punishment... literally.)

But aren't the Chief's ears affected?

...

(That's beside the point...)

That's gotta violate some kind of union rule.

This mark looks like some kind of flower.

"Prosecutor's badge"...?
Sound: Realization

Yeah, like the one hanging from your collar.

What!? They have badges too!?
Sound: Light Bulb

Now that you mention it, it does look all pointy and kind of painful.

But Mr. Edgeworth never wears a badge.

That's because he's a sharp dresser.

Sound: Realization

Well, can't fault that logic.

So sharp dressers don't need to wear badges?
Sound: Realization

I guess everyone just kind of lets it slide.

(I don't see how that's supposed to signify severe punishment...)

Have we seen any prosecutor wearing a badge?

Wow! Look at the size of Chief Gant's desk!

(Speaking of that, when we were here earlier...)

Chief Gant!
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

I wonder what he was reading?

Sound: Realization

A list of evidence?

Hey, look at the case name!
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Hold on, Detective! What did you just say?
Sound: Light Bulb

I said,
Sound: Light Bulb

"I wonder what..."

No, about evidence lists. Normally they're twice as long?

Music: Suspense

(A half-sized list of evidence...)

Most lists...

run twice as long.

Other half!? Up until that moment I'd thought it was just another copy of the same shortened list, with some things left out. Gant literally tearing the list in half and only giving one half to Edgeworth seems sloppy.

It would appear so.

Music: Silence

Sound: Select Jingle

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

We can still look at the desk again.

Wow! Look at the size of Chief Gant's desk!

We found this inside the drawer.

A list of evidence from the SL-9 Incident.

(What would this list be doing here...?)

(We'd better look a little more into this list.)
Sound: Realization

Good idea!

Unfortunately the list isn't actually readable.

Flip it over, though...

That looks an awful lot like what Ema saw the night of the incident. Was this the drawing she did? Why would it be on here?

I wonder what this is? (It looks like someone drew some kind of sketch here!)

Sound: Light Bulb

(I can't make it out. I'd better keep quiet about it for now.)

Huh? Oh. No, it's nothing.

(I'd better not forget about this picture!)

The evidence doesn't actually get updated, but finding that picture on the back feels like the first time we've really needed to use this examine-evidence system to figure something out. Let's present this thing to Gumshoe now.

That's what the Chief was reading before, wasn't it?

You know, when we first came in here?

Yeah. It looks like the right side of the form's been torn off.

Sound: Light Bulb

Something else is buggin' me more than that.

(The back...?)
Sound: Realization

A nice hint to look closer at this list. Appreciated since it's been awhile since we've really been able to use that system, and I'm not sure we've ever really needed to use it.

I could've sworn this guy was going to have blood on his knife/short sword. But either the incident didn't really go down that way or Gant swapped it out? Finding the blood pool all the way on the other side of the room kind of makes it less likely that anything happened over here. Maybe it's just meant to be distinctive, to prove that the "team picture" on the other side was really taken in here?

This is the real deal, isn't it? This armor and these weapons?

First the pipe organ, now this armor...

Do you know how many taxpayer dollars must have gone into this room?
Sound: Realization

What? You mean we're paying for this!?
Sound: Whack

Eh, they were probably "donations" from the likes of Redd White, anyway.

Good luck in prison!

(You don't have any taxes to pay.)

Ssh!

Be careful of what you say!

I don't think he'd fit in there.
Sound: Realization

Even if he did, he'd never be able to get back out.
Sound: Realization

I already know the man's stare is terrifying, at least.

You can see pretty far from 15 stories up.

Okay, I love how they don't even let Ema finish that gag here.

Really? Why didn't he?

Oh.

(Stained glass or not, it's a huge window...)

That safe looks entirely too interesting, let's try the rest of the room first.

Here's that picture again...

(The day Joe Darke ran out of the questioning room and tried to kill Ema...)

then went along with Chief Gant to question Darke.

I know! Manfred von Karma killed Neil Marshall, for taking his award!

(Gee, you think?)

This was Lana's desk. It sure is tidy.

There's not even any dust on it! Looks like someone's still keeping it clean.

Does Lana ever come back here?

No.

They were the stuff legends are made of!

(Does he keep it in memory of her, or in memory of the crime...?)

Way to make it creepy, Phoenix.

These shelves are mostly empty.

Lana must have cleaned them out when she transferred over to the Prosecutor's Office.

There's a small picture frame on the left shelf.

Hey!
Sound: Light Bulb

...

...That was weird.

Look at that giant window...

Uh, this is the 15th floor.
Sound: Realization

I know! I was just saying...
Sound: Whack

(Saying what?)

Jumping through a window? Or hurling yourself from a 15-story building?

So long as he doesn't go crashing through that window when he gets fired.

Don't say that!
Sound: Whack

Looks like all that's left is this safe.

This is a safe, isn't it?

Uh, okay. If you say so...

Music: Silence

I don't even need to check our list of numbers to remember this one.

Do you know what it is?
Sound: Light Bulb

I have a hunch...

Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Photo Snap x 4

Music: Logic and Trick

There's only one seven-digit number that we know about. Gant isn't really that dumb, is he?

Well. I guess we've confirmed who has that ID number now.

Sound: Ching

Bingo.
Sound: Realization

quote:

We can choose not to touch the safe, if we want to keep investigating the rest of the room first.

(I'm not sure what will happen if we enter the wrong code.)

(I'd better wait until I find something more definite.)

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

A seven-digit number...

Didn't we see one of those somewhere?

How about we try entering my birth date?

We get brought back to the examine screen, and have to re-examine the safe to get back to the code entry prompt.

quote:

If we enter the wrong code, the safe displays "Code input error." instead and dumps us back out.

I guess that wasn't it.

Music: Silence

I was so sure that was the number!

Maybe we should check the Court Record again!

(A seven digit number...)

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

We're left back facing Gumshoe, and have to go into the examine screen and look at the safe again. Or check the Court Record first for some inspiration.

Music: Silence

Sound: Whack

Whose birthday was that, pal?
Sound: Whack

"7777777." The final ID card number on that record.
Sound: Realization

What?
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Suspense

The number of the mysterious "executive officer" who entered the room that day.

You mean,
Sound: Whack

I think you're one "seven" shy this time.

This can only mean one thing: That's Chief Gant's ID number!
Sound: Objection

And he's really bad at password security!

Sound: Whack

We have to examine the open safe now...

Sound: Whack
Sound: Damage 2

Is that why Gant can always loan out $50? I figured it was more the corruption, myself.

Look! It's a... a...
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Realization

Hmm, now why would he have that here?

(This somehow looks familiar. Where have I seen this before...?)
Sound: Light Bulb

There's something else in here too.

Sound: Realization

Two-for-one!

Sound: Whack

You think the Chief made up the design?
Sound: Drama Pound

Uh... I don't think so.
Sound: Realization

Oh. Well, it was just a thought.

Sound: Whack

Apparently so. It's empty now.

Music: Silence

They look like pieces of evidence.

Sound: Realization

I'm afraid I can't just let you take them.

Sound: Whack

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

(Great. Now I have to prove their "relevancy" to get them.)

(How are these two items related to the SL-9 Incident?)

Ema's last line there is a hint that we need to present something. One of them is easy...

We found a shard that looks a lot like it came from this jar.

Detective Gumshoe. Could you have another look at this jar?

(It's kind of early to be nostalgic.)

Wasn't this jar a piece of evidence from that case?

If only one shard had an evidence tag on it, does that mean the jar was intact after the incident and shattered some time later? Otherwise wouldn't every shard have an evidence tag?

Doesn't this ring any bells? You know, that fragment we just found?

Sound: Realization

Yes, that one... that was in the safe.
Sound: Realization

...

Music: Silence

!
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Whack

It's just one shard, how bad could it be?

Here, let me see that shard. I'll take a crack at this.

Sound: Realization

Mr. Wright! Here's some glue!
Sound: Light Bulb

(If I can piece this together again...)

(it'll prove Chief Gant was knowingly hiding evidence!)

(Here goes...)

quote:

We can leave the jar alone, if we have other things to look at first.

Maybe we shouldn't do this right now.
Sound: Whack

What!?
Sound: Stab

Look, bud. You don't get someone all worked up, then just leave them hanging!

You're as bad as that girl I met back when I was 16...

Sixteen... That's the same age I am.

I wonder what happened?

(It's hard to imagine Detective Gumshoe and teenage angst.)

quote:

Original line: "(It's hard to imagine Detective Gumshoe had a childhood.)" Doesn't fit as well, I guess?

Well, if we don't do it now, then let's at least do it later!

From there we get brought back to the evidence list for presenting to Gumshoe.

Music: Logic and Trick

More of the jar assembly mini-game, but just one piece to wrestle into place.

Interesting mark there. That's not just normal blood spatter.

quote:

Once we agree to try assembling the jar, we can also give up on the puzzle screen...

I don't get it! This piece doesn't fit anywhere on this jar!
Sound: Stab

Music: Silence

What? But it has to!

Well, I need a breather. I'll try it again later.

If you don't, I'll switch your eye drops with my special solution!
Sound: Realization

We go all the way back to the main menu for the room from there, and have to re-present the jar to get back to where we were. I wonder if originally there were going to be multiple shards in the safe?

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

Chief Gant willingly and knowingly hid a piece of this jar in his safe.
Sound: Realization

!
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Suspense

In other words, he concealed a piece of evidence from the SL-9 Incident.

But...

Sound: Whack

What is it?

it's different from the others!
Sound: Realization

Sound: Wipe

Okay now what the hell is that?

Sound: Light Bulb

(That's blood!)
Sound: Realization

Well no poo poo. But how or why did it leave a mark like that?

Sound: Stab

Music: Silence

Why would Chief Gant hide this in his safe?
Sound: Realization

Part 150: Episode 5, Day 3, Investigation: Evidence Tampering

This one isn't too hard. The logical thing to do with a mysterious handprint is to check for fingerprints!

But first, I didn't have enough characters free in the last update to present the completed jar to Gumshoe, so let's do that now!

I feel a lot better now that this jar's complete.

But it only raises another question:

Sound: Realization

More importantly, why wasn't there any money in there?

Isn't that what safes are for anyway!?
Sound: Whack

(I have a feeling the outcome of tomorrow's trial just might hinge on this...)

We can also look closer at the odd mark on this jar...

Hmm... Looks like blood.
Sound: Realization

This piece the Chief has is different, though.

but this one's a line!
Sound: Light Bulb

(That is odd...)

Anyway, onto the fingerprinting set!

Detective Gumshoe. I'd like you to have a look at this.

Sound: Light Bulb

That's a great idea, Detective!

...

...

Music: Silence

What are you doing? Why are you sticking out your hand like that?
Sound: Realization

Sound: Realization

...

Huh?
Sound: Light Bulb

Come on, this isn't the time for jokes.
Sound: Whack

We're talking about that cloth we found in the safe!

Sound: Damage 2
Sound: Light Bulb

Sheesh, where's your sense of humor?

Music: Logic and Trick

Sprinkle the powder on the cloth,

Maybe that safe really preserved the oils in the fingerprints that allow for absorbing the powder? I'm not going to question this one too closely.

(What are you, my mom? I don't have to be told a million times.)

All right, let's get this over with!

The hardest part of this process is guessing which of the five prints here will give us a complete result.

I've learned to be very wasteful with the powder in order to actually count as fully covering the print.
Sound: Light Bulb

Hmm... I gave it my best shot.

quote:

If we select one print, and then go back:

(I think I'd like to try one of the other fingerprints.)

Okay, let's move on to a different finger!

Simple and takes us back to the handprint. If we go back from the handprint, we get taken all the way back to the main menu for the room without any lines about it.

But it doesn't look like we'll get a clearer result from this print.

Back at the handprint now. We get that smudged print for four out of the five possibilities here. I'll spare you the rest of my trial and error and take you straight to the good print.

Sound: Light Bulb

This one took a couple of tries to fully cover it.

User whitehelm pointed out last time I messed around with fingerprint matching, that I don't need to just randomly guess. It's pretty clear from just looking at the two prints that there's no match here. But if not Gant, then who?

...

Now why would Gant have Ema's handprint in his safe? Where could it have come from?

quote:

Some hints from submitting an incorrect match:

No, that doesn't match.

Music: Silence

It looks like we're out of clues this time.

Yeah...

But it was inside the Chief's safe.

Right, along with that shard.

So that means it's got to have something to do with that incident!

The one that happened right here in this room... She's right!)
Sound: Realization

We get another flashback to Darke holding the knife over Marshall for the previous line.

(We should check the fingerprints of everyone who was in here that day!)

The way I see it, there's a higher power at work here. You just gotta have faith.
Sound: Light Bulb

Music: Logic and Trick

We're brought back to the fingerprint matching screen. There's no option to go back from here; we have to find the match to proceed.

Music: Silence

Sound: Realization

(What are Ema's fingerprints doing here!?)

Sound: Light Bulb

Huh? Oh, uh... it seems the prints are too old.
Sound: Stab

They aren't clear enough to get a match.
Sound: Realization

That would've been interesting. I don't think Darke was in our comparison prints for matching, anyway.

Psst! Hey you. Over here.

Sound: Realization

Gumshoe cleverly calls us over to the other side of the room to discuss this news.

Don't ask me!

Let's just keep this information from Ema for now.

...

I'm on board with hiding this one from her. We don't need her pulling a DL-6 and confessing on the last trial day or something.

Sound: Select Jingle

Can we pair this up with the evidence list to figure out what it is? Maybe during trial tomorrow.

Music: Damon Gant ~ Swimming, Anyone?

Maybe Gumshoe can tell us more about it?

What is this piece of cloth, anyway?

I think I've felt something like this before...

...

Nah. I can't remember.

It seems this is becoming a habit with you.

Note to Self: Detective Gumshoe is going senile.

(Ema's fingerprints were found on this cloth.)

(I have a bad feeling about this...)

I'm stumped on this cloth. We can give it a closer look, though.

This is a handprint, right?

Yeah. Someone left behind an oil stain on the fabric.

Whoever it was, they must have had a really oily hand.

Sound: Light Bulb

Huh?

A more likely explanation is...

getting wax all over their hand.

Well, that would account for this amount of oil I guess.
Sound: Realization

(I don't see what's so "scientific" about it though.)

...Did it happen right before you went to hang out in Lana's office that day? No, no reason for asking...

Sound: Light Bulb

I'm very confused by our new evidence, to be honest. That cloth in particular just opened up a lot more questions. Anyway, once we have cleared Gumshoe's topics again and obtained all three new pieces of evidence (the evidence list, the cloth-with-handprint, and the completed jar), we get tossed straight into a new scene.

Of course!

quote:

Since we trigger the scene once getting all three pieces of evidence, we lose the opportunity to present to Gumshoe whichever item we obtained last. I cheated to show you the results of all three anyway.

Sound: Realization

Phoenix, you coward! Please tell me you did not leave our under-age colleague alone with the killer!!

The Chief's office is off limits!

I'm not sure what Gumshoe's trying here, but good effort I guess? Pretty sure he's still fired.

I'm going to pause a moment and look at some of our evidence with Ema not around to comment on it.

The dark red stains must be blood traces from the incident two years ago.

I think I've figured this one out. The prologue had a spinning knife. Did someone toss the true murder weapon across the room, striking and breaking this jar? Leaving a mark where the knife impacted it, and spatter elsewhere?

A clear handprint can be seen on the leather cloth.

A leather cloth... was Neil Marshall wearing a leather vest? Could this cloth be a scrap from it? How would Ema's handprint have gotten on it?

A picture is drawn on the back of the evidence list in magic marker.

I haven't figured this one out. It's Ema's drawing of what she saw when the lightning struck. It seems difficult to stab Neil Marshall in the back from this position, but I'm not sure it proves anything. However, between two of these items having ties to Ema, and Gant's interest in holding Ema back just now, I've come up with a new theory.

What if... Ema somehow caused Neil Marhsall's death? Gant walks in on the scene, tosses the real murder weapon away (accidentally breaking the jar), and stabs Marshall with Joe Darke's knife into the same wound. He then conspires with Lana to frame Darke and cover up that anything else ever happened in there. Maybe he even tells Lana about Ema's involvement to blackmail her. Lana being blackmailed and submitting to everything in this case so far explains all of her behavior in this episode, from her confession to her reluctance for us to investigate anything to do with SL-9. Then, two years later, Goodman can't let SL-9 just be closed forever, and Gant kills him to keep everything quiet. Gant then pressures Lana again, getting her to the parking garage where she ends up taking the fall for Goodman's murder. I think we have all the pieces now, with one big hole at the start of this paragraph still....

Oh, right, Gumshoe's still acting like he wasn't just fired.

I thought you said you didn't care anymroe if you were fired.
Sound: Realization

I never would've said it!

(Now that I've seen the evidence Chief Gant was hiding in his office...)

We didn't need a hint after all; the game brought us straight here on its own.

It's no use thinking about it. Tomorrow's the final day in court.

I'm committed to doing everything I can to defend you, which is why I'm here.

What you've told me over these past couple of days...

is absolutely nothing. Not a single, useful thing.

Something I told you right at the beginning.

You know, I think I've finally figured it out.

She was telling the truth all along. She did stab Goodman. But she wasn't "the" one who did it; she was one of the ones...

Sound: Realization

quote:

Original line: "Who it is you're hiding behind those words." Using "lurking" gives the new line a more sinister context, I like it.

Sound: Light Bulb

It seems Edgeworth was right.

Edgeworth...?

"Thick-headed" is the term he used, I believe.

(Now's my chance to get her to tell me the rest of the story!)

I'm guessing we have more topics unlocked, but first I want to run around to see if anything has changed elsewhere.

Instead of a list of locations, I get this explanation from Phoenix. That line probably should have been in your head, Phoenix.

Okay, so we can't move. Let's try out our evidence then.

(Showing evidence isn't going to do me any good now.)

(I've got to get Lana to tell me everything she's hiding!)

Mr. Wright.

I'm starting to see the hunger in your eyes.

We have no choice but to talk, and only one topic has revealed itself. It's a barely-interactive cutscene, really, but let's dive in.

I have to admit I was more than a little perplexed at first.

That's when it hit me. It's not that you're unwilling to tell the truth,

Sound: Realization

What an intriguing notion. A certain, "individual," you say?

Protecting? No. I think "afraid of" is more like it.

!
Sound: Light Bulb

If I'm not mistaken, the person in question may have persuaded you to silence.

...

The one I am supposedly so "frightened" of?

What is this person's name?

This one's so easy, the game even presents it as the default option. I have no idea how these are sorted, actually.

Well, Ms. Skye?

...

Mr. Wright. You are addressing the Chief Prosecutor.

Do not forget your place.

(I take it she's still not ready to spill the beans.)

My apologies.

W-who would that be?
Sound: Whack

Why you, of course.
Sound: Realization

Me?
Sound: Light Bulb

Yes. You seriously believe what you're saying, don't you? Now that's scary.

I, uh...

You seem to have the makings of a criminal in you, what with all your fallacious accusations.

Care to spend tonight in the cell next to mine?

(If you ask me, you're the scary one...)

Music: Investigation - Core

And we're back at our single topic; it plays out exactly the same as before when selected.

Our reward is a new single topic to go over. Our movement is still restricted, so nothing to do but put voice to our theory.

I respected him as a detective.

Assuming he is respectable, then tell me something...

Sound: Realization

Even though it's a Phoenix line, I had to show Lana's well-timed reaction there.

His "crimes"...?

Both you and Edgeworth will be brought before a board of inquiry for what you did.

Specifically, hiding and forging evidence.

Why is it, though, that Chief Gant's name was never mentioned?

Chief Gant...?
Sound: Light Bulb

Edgeworth didn't know the truth behind the forgery.

The only party who could have possibly tampered with the evidence was...

Me.
Sound: Realization

Yes you, but also one other: Damon Gant.

...

Show me proof that Chief Gant falsified evidence in that case!

Seems like there could be multiple options here, of the three things we got from Gant's office. I'll start with the buried evidence list.

I just found this in a safe in the Chief's office.
Sound: Realization

Actually, we found that list in Gant's desk?

...Neither of those is the evidence list we presented.

The jar piece, yes. The strip of cloth, I'm not sure we've established as related to SL-9 directly, other than it having Ema's prints on it? So what's going on here? I think there's either a bug or there's a disconnect between the script and the gameplay here. Presenting the completed jar gets us this same scene, and it makes a little more sense that way. Normally when the scene shows two pieces of evidence like that, it's because either one works in the prior prompt, but that's not the case here. Presenting the piece of cloth that we found doesn't actually work here at all. So why does presenting the evidence list work, when the subsequent dialogue doesn't seem to refer to it?

I...

Now tell me! Why are you taking all the blame for him!
Sound: Desk Slam

I've never been so tempted to use a non-default sprite for a Phoenix-line in an investigation segment. This whole conversation even feels more like a trial sequence!

quote:

As I mentioned, the strip of cloth doesn't work, so that or anything else besides the jar and the list just take us back to topic selection again, though we are still on the second topic instead of going all the way back to the beginning at least.

You want proof of the Chief's wrongdoings? Here it is!

Music: Silence

That "evidence" proves someone is doing something wrong all right,

but it's not the Chief.

W-who would that be?
Sound: Whack

From here, the conversation is the same as if we'd gotten the first choice wrong.

Music: Silence

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

Why not?

Three days ago...

I had no choice but to cooperate.

(In the murder of Detective Goodman!)
Sound: Realization

Yes, that's more accurate than "cooperate."

Topic #3, still locked into the program, here we go!

Although I can't tell you the details,

I can say that I was given an order that day.

Music: Silence

Sound: Wipe

Well, that rather plainly spells it out. No dialogue blips for either of those two lines, either.

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

Just as I suspected.

Despite what everyone believes...

Correct.

And I discovered the murder weapon while inspecting the body.

The murder weapon... You mean, Edgeworth's knife?

No.

Sound: Realization

(The knife from the SL-9 Incident... serial killer Joe Darke's knife!)
Sound: Light Bulb

so I took it out and stabbed him with another knife.
Sound: Stab 2

Music: Silence

That would be Edgeworth's knife?

That's right.

That's why I ended up

cutting my hand.
Sound: Realization

And that is the reason for the bandage on your right hand?
Sound: Light Bulb

And then...

Sound: Shock 2

(Ms. Starr, huh...)

The only thing I'm still not sure about - was Ms. Starr planted there to witness Lana disposing of Goodman's body, or was that fact a mere coincidence?

Music: Recollection ~ The SL-9 Incident

Why did you need to hide Darke's knife so badly?

We don't have to pass a test to unlock the next topic. I guess that means the previous topic can stick around and be repeated.

It took a lot of work to finally close the Darke case two years ago.

My intent was to prevent that

by whatever means possible.

So... you hid Darke's knife?

If word got out, which it would, the reporters would have a field day with that.

Sound: Wipe

During the five-minute gap in Angel Starr's testimony, I assume.

In Edgeworth's exhaust pipe...

Sound: Realization

You asked Ema?
Sound: Light Bulb

I didn't want anyone on the force to know about this.

Music: Silence

Sound: Wipe

Well, except apparently Ema didn't hear Lana's instructions well enough to actually execute them. Instead she found us, and we ruined Lana's grand plan to confess and keep SL-9 buried by providing her with a competent defense.

Sound: Wipe

A bad feeling?

the first thing I did was make a phone call.

Sound: Realization

Oh! You mean...
Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Wipe

He had already stolen the ID card...

So your phone call caused the incident in the evidence room!?
Sound: Realization

Music: Silence

But Lana...

Now please...

Music: Investigation - Core

(Tomorrow's trial... There's only one way to drive off Lana's demons...)

I'm not sure we actually learned anything new from Lana, but it's nice to have our double-stabbing theory confirmed.

Music: Jingle - It Can't End Here

This investigation day was another long one, but it was by far the most enjoyable. Trial day should be fun tomorrow. Assuming we have two segments again, will there be two witnesses? Will we start with Lana or Ema, or go straight after Gant? I'm actually excited to find out!

I was kind of wondering 'why did i like this case again?' to myself, as we went through this. It's so much longer and less sensical than I remember. But the most recent segments, yeah. They're very good. I'm remembering why I wanted to see this again.

That and Gant's music, of course.

Yeah, as much as the case is way too long, it does feel wonderful once everything starts slotting into place. We've got some of the answers, or at least we have some plausible ideas about some of the answers, and now it's time to start sorting everything out and wrapping up all of those little inconsistencies that have been bothering us all case long.

(This is the Defendant's Lobby all right... but there's no defendant.)

If that number does belong to whom you suspect, then no doubt will remain.

After all, he hasn't been officially charged with anything.

True... Not yet.
Sound: Realization

Is Phoenix's whole strategy to get Gant charged with evidence tampering to reveal his ID number? That's... actually not bad?

Five minutes, Wright, and Chief Prosecutor Skye will be found guilty.

But she didn't do it!
Sound: Whack

We've fairly well-proven that Goodman was killed in the evidence room, not the parking garage. And that it wasn't Lana's ID on the record accessing the evidence room. She's just about the only person that couldn't have killed Goodman, but she'll still be found guilty anyway if we can't nail the real killer.

Edgeworth seems to realize the whole setup today is ridiculous, too.

(This is the first time he's ever done something like this...)

Lana's hiding something, and the only way we'll ever know the truth...

Lana promised to take me to dinner after she finished her work.

Yes, Joe Darke.

Joe Darke was brought in for questioning on the day of that ceremony.

When he saw his chance...

he fled the room, right?

Upon fleeing the room, Darke proceeded to take the elevator.

So wait, he took the elevator to the top floor where Gant's office is? I thought earlier they said he ran straight from the questioning room to the office, which happened to be across from the elevator. Maybe Darke really was targeting Gant's office all along?

Then he ran into Skye and Gant's office.

There was a lot of noise coming from outside, so I...

Deputy Chief Damon Gant, and Prosecutor Neil Marshall.

Original line: "(Gant was there too...?)" I guess the original script had forgotten that we'd already heard Gant was there once before?

I see...

I told the detective about what I saw then.

So you spoke with Detective Goodman about this... two years ago.

And you told Detective Goodman about what you saw?

Yes, but...

Thank you, Ema. You don't have to go into that.

Now then, please tell us.

This scene that imprinted an image in your mind...

Can you please describe it to us?

The man...

And yes, we get the same scene for backing off each time. We just get taken back to the cross, and Ema's last line of testimony.

Sound: Gavel

Y-yes, Your Honor.

New statement! It replaces the last one we just dealt with. We of course immediately press on it.

You drew a picture of the scene you witnessed, right?

I can still see it now... Whenever I close my eyes...

Sound: Realization

Perhaps the witness is mistaken?

(This picture that Ema drew... that reminds me!)

(I guess I should check the evidence again...)
Sound: Realization

Well anyway. Let's continue.

Now I'm confused. It seems we have two things to present here.

Can you please describe it to us?

The man...

The man raised up his knife, and... and stabbed Mr. Marshall in the chest...!

That must have been a real shock.

Tell us...

what were you doing at that moment?

Yeah, especially since it really is a turning point for his character. This is how he gets spinoff games.

Happy New Year everyone!

As this thread enters its third calendar year with the end finally in sight, I just wanted to thank everyone who's stuck with it from the beginning and those who joined up late. For me these LPs are only worth doing when also seeing others' reactions to them, so thank you all for the over 2,000 replies so far.

Does this mean you are stopping after the first and not going into Justice for All next?

Either way, this has been a blast.

It's been downright amazing to see someone actually get through AA1 as a screenshot LP, especially of this quality. Big props to DKII.

I would also believe that JFA would be its own thread, and so this thread would come to an end.

Yeah I'll do a new thread for the second game. We already have over 150 updates in this one...

I SHOULD KEEP MY DUMB MOUTH SHUT INSTEAD OF SPEWING HORSESHIT ABOUT THE ORBITAL MECHANICS OF THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT A LAGRANGE POINT IS?

Actually, it makes him a spree killer, not a mass murderer. :eng101:
