On day 10 of my first infection and my only remaining symptom is a lot of congestion in my nose. It was a rough ride though. Even with my (probably thanks to pax) light symptoms, covid made me feel way worse than other times I've been sick. I'd hate to get it again so maybe this was the kick in the nuts I needed to more religiously avoid indoor dining despite social pressure to do it here in NYC. At least there's a lot of outdoor places here when you want to eat restaurant food. This all makes me feel confused though - why isn't this how most people respond when they catch covid? It's a terrible experience, so why wouldn't that influence everyone who gets it to try harder to avoid it afterwards?

References with links to details on data limitations, sampling methods, and normalization protocols:

Solid lines are generated from normalized and smoothed data provided by the Washington State Department of Health (WADoH Ref. (1) ), Verily/WastewaterSCAN (WWS Ref. (3) ), and Biobot (Ref. (4) ).

White diamond dots are from most recent CDC/NWSS (Ref. (2) ) data scaled to supplement missing or out-dated data when available.

Because each of these four groups use different normalization methods, different smoothing methods, and different averaging/location identifiers, the concentration of virus is not comparable between locations. See reference links at the bottom of this post for more details.

There are 33 sewersheds distributed across 6 charts grouped by region then alphabetized by county and sewershed. The tables below contain WADoH or NWSS/WSS IDs (to match their respective dashboards), Date last sampled, and Trend (based on the change between the averages of the two most recent weeks).

All data presented are smoothed in some degree to even out inconsistent sampling dates and extreme highs and lows. Most sewersheds are sampled 1-3 times a week and are published within a week. Some locations are late reporting by 10 days or more so be sure to note your sewershed's Date in the table or graph. Locations that are more than two weeks old will have n/a listed under Trend to indicate there it is out of date.

Snowglobe of Doom

sucks to be right
It's the middle of summer but Australia has got one of them good ol' tripledemics going, right in time for Christmas

quote:

Surge in Queensland respiratory illness prompts warning to stay away from older relatives

Queensland is experiencing an unseasonal surge in respiratory infections, prompting Chief Health Officer John Gerrard to warn people with symptoms to stay away from elderly relatives during the festive season.

Dr Gerrard said more than 300 people were in the state's hospitals with COVID-19 – four times higher than in mid-October.

Another 66 people are in hospital with influenza, lower than the winter peak of more than 400 but higher than expected in summer.

Last week, Queensland recorded 2,162 COVID-19 infections and 836 cases of influenza.

Dr Gerrard said paediatric specialists were also reporting an increase in the numbers of children with mycoplasma pneumoniae, a contagious bacterial infection, with pathology laboratories recording a trebling of cases since the end of November.

The jump in mycoplasma infections in Queensland follows a similar rise in China and elsewhere in the northern hemisphere in recent weeks.

"We have not seen significant numbers of mycoplasma infection since before the COVID-19 pandemic," Dr Gerrard said.

Complications in children can include encephalitis, a serious brain inflammation.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-12-21/influenza-sick-christmas-john-gerrard/103254282

Of course they're blaming it on immunity debt

quote:

Dr Gerrard said the "significant uptick" in respiratory illnesses and corresponding hospital admissions was unusual for Queensland in summer.

He blamed disruptions to the "normal pattern of respiratory infection" during the COVID pandemic.

"For two years of the pandemic, most of us didn't even get a head cold because the world was shut down, so there was very little transmission of pathogens around the world," he said.

"The normal transmission of pathogens — viruses and bacteria — was disrupted and probably immunity in the general population against these organisms has waned a little bit because we're not regularly exposed to them.

"Young children may never have been exposed to mycoplasma before. That's why significant numbers of children are getting sick at the moment because they're not likely to have any form of natural immunity to the organism."

Edit: Queensland has also just had catastrophic floods so they actually have a second tripledemic going on. They're dual-wielding tripledemics

quote:

Disease warning for north Queenslanders in floodwaters as clean-up begins

Health authorities in north Queensland are concerned three diseases could present significant risks to residents and relief workers as they attempt to clean up after the record flooding in the state's north.

Richard Gair, director of Tropical Public Health Unit in Cairns, said key concerns included gastroenteritis and leptospirosis, but a soil-borne disease was at the top of the list, melioidosis, which can be fatal.

Melioidosis is a rare tropical disease caused by bacteria commonly found within the soil in northern Australia but can come to the surface during floods when "everything is churned up".

During the last major flooding in north Queensland, in 2019 in Townsville, four of the 22 people diagnosed with melioidosis died.

"People get melioidosis either by being immersed in floodwater, swallowing the water, or breathing in an aerosol of a spray from flood water or mud," Dr Gair said.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-12-21/queensland-disease-warning-after-cyclone-and-flood/103247748

That comes with a side order of mosquito-borne viruses

quote:

Increased amounts of stagnant water after floods also mean a mosquito population boom.

"The main mosquito that we're likely to see increase in significant numbers is the culex mosquito," Dr Gair said.

"That mosquito is the one that transmits Ross River fever and Barmah Forest virus."

During the core of COVID this was kind of an understandable practice, but since vaccines are widely available, PPE has returned to normal price and availability, and staffing has slowly begun to crawl back to normal levels, s*** like this just infuriates me.

It's very obvious this is done to cut labor costs and phone in prescribing physicians.

I'm so curious what the justification for this is when Covid's been a non-emergency for years now

Edit: ok.. Downvote all you want but explain? With majority vaccinations and mortality rates down everyone is back to breathing down each other's neck in the supermarket line. 6 ft. is gone. Plastic shields are gone. Masks are gone. The Fed Gov has ended the emergency officially. So... What is the justification?

quote:

What are they worried about? Getting Covid? It really wasn’t that bad and ppl need to get over it. Had it 3 times, barely noticed all 3 times.

quote:

At this point I'd walk out. The standard of care is disturbingly low in telehealth visits and any reputable clinic should be providing PPE and mandating COVID screenings while still providing in person visits at this point.

This was 100% to save money and phone in prescribing physicians to cover shifts.

Inhaled COVID vaccines stop infection in its tracks in monkey trials]Delivery of COVID-19 vaccines directly to the lungs and nose can stop SARS-CoV-2 infections in their tracks, according to a trio of new studies in monkeys. The research offers a boost to the wave of ‘mucosal’ COVID-19 vaccines now in development — and provides clues about how they might be improved.

Until now, there has been little evidence that mucosal vaccines, which are taken by nose or mouth, shield people against infection any better than existing COVID-19 jabs do. Even so, some countries have already approved such vaccines, and key trials are under way in the United States, with others set to start.
