A quite successful transwoman video essayist in the Jessie Gender, etc vein who deleted her entire channel and web presence after dying on the anti-nudity/toplessness/etc hill that the fundamental issue was about the potential titillation of others and not personal body autonomy, and therefore anything that could be deemed titillating or arousing to somebody was inappropriate for public display, which meant that it was immoral and inappropriate to be barefoot or wear sandals in public because a foot fetishist might be around and see, and become aroused by your nude feet, which is a 'you' problem and not a 'them' problem? A key part of hbomberguy's thesis in that video is that serial plagiarists only steal from sources they don't respect, be it Melania Trump (or, more realistically, her speechwriters) stealing from Michelle Obama or Illuminaughty copy / pasting from Wikipedia. Somerton doesn't have a background in film critique. He has a background in marketing, which is why he set up a content mill cribbing queer film theory from sources he doesn't care about criticizing media he doesn't consume. Hell, when called out for stealing content about queer themes in Merlin he repeatedly got the name of the show wrong, calling it "Arthur" instead. I can very much see him taking those same attitudes and applying them towards being an amateur queer historian. His takes about queerness in Nazi Germany are bafflingly wrong because he doesn't give a poo poo about queer history or Nazi Germany. He's a marketing dude. I'm assuming? I haven't watched his content. I wouldn't be surprised to have heard a "no kink at pride" stance from him. Also he stole opinions from enough people that who knows what he actually thinks about anything. Misogyny I stand by.

That's one of the points that notably inconsistent, actually. Was there any instances of Somerton trying to sic his fans on cishet dudes or did he just reserve it for women and other queer creators? For a while I thought it was him not picking a bone with the one group of people he didn't badmouth (at least as much as straight women) but I'm wondering if it's also the combination of cishet dudes having even more rabid fans and/or cishet creators sadly usually not wading into this sort of drama to begin with.

I watched a few of Somerton's videos a while back, think he was recommended in this thread at some point. The only thing I remember about that was watching the gay hollywood one and thinking it was really hosed up to say "Oh yes all interesting gays died from AIDS, leaving only the safe and boring ones" and never bothering with him again.

Ya'll seem to be interested in queer kink history. So I'd like to take this time to point out the Carter Johnson Library's YT channel. ( It's YT safe, but you'll probably want headphones.)The Carter Johnson Library is a private library of kink/leather/queer books, magazines, art and history. It's possibly the last private sex-positive library of it's kind in the US. It's collection rivals that of most public college's collection and their center routinely host scholars doing research. The best part of about this channel is that it's hosted by the library's head librarian and founder, Vi Johnson. She and her wife Jill Carter are kink royalty. They are extremely well known and loved in the BDSM community. They have been active in the BDSM community sense the 70s. Vi is Mom and Grand Mother to a lot of us and if you get the chance hear her you'll understand why. These videos don't have the same quality as your regular video essayist, Mom isn't real good with technology. It's mostly unboxing videos about new items donated to the library or discussions/interviews held over Zoom. But if your looking for solid information from people who were active and around the last 50 years of queer history, I can't think of a better place. Merry Christmas!
