I admit I threw Vera Valiant out cold because I was curious to see what people would make of it. So, yes, it is a genuine strip, and is intentionally parodying soap operas -- probably inspired, as Jethro McB notes, by the popularity of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. In fact, I found a couple of papers that ran it under the title Vera Valiant, Vera Valiant to make the connection even more blatant.

I'm so friggin smart so why aren't I rich?

No, no, see, Brad is a Terrible Person because he pretends to like Sonia's cooking while hating it in his mind, and uses his connection with one of the family members to force the woman that hates his guts to spend time with him.

Unlike Keith, who is a Good Person because he... *checks notes* pretends to like Sonia's cooking while hating it in his mind, and uses his connection with one of the family members to force the woman that hates his guts to spend time with him...?

Front-page sidebar that might become relevant eventually: the front-page headline of September 8, 1943 was Eisenhower's announcement of the unconditional surrender of Italy. Mussolini had been deposed and the fascist government he'd founded had collapsed in July. This was far from the end of the Italian war, though, because that was also the day the Nazis launched an invasion of Italy. Rome was going to be Axis territory for a little while longer...under new management.

But hey, Monday was Labor Day! And here's what labor looked like in 1943.

Batiuk/whomever is unintentionally funny with this ongoing bit where almost everything the blonde woman has been saying is a variation of, "Let me out of this greasy pizza hell" and everyone around her in the strip thinks it's heartwarming. I guess the residents hear the comments and assume that she'll eventually lose the will to live as she continues to live in Ohio/Westview.

I don't think I'm ready for how hard Planck is about to be owned. :ohdear:

Nothing like a full-throated NuTrail. The thought bubble to illustrate a fish hook, in case the reader was unfamiliar. The artist giving up: Cherry has Popeye arms, Mark's hand has doubled in length nightmarishly on an arm that can't possibly line up with his posture, literally a prop from off camera. I'm not sure why Jules goes for distance shots when she refuses to detail them. Looking at that those panel 1 and panel 2 hands she refuses to detail close ups too so oh well. The absurdly stupid writing: Mark opened a retreat for men in martial trouble to go fishing and is surprised that they had emotional problems, so in his own words he blew them off. What a guy.

And like the little corner guy in a Kelly from the Onion always the loving narration box.
