i hope when adventure mode is out ill be able to have two active saves in two different worlds so i dont need to abandon my fort. i guess i could always manually back it up and switch them out or something though

Oh, and Jones was there too.

I don't really understand the issue? If you want two saves in the same world, you can just copy the save and rename the folder to something else and keep both? If you want to start a new fort, just save manually and start a new fort?

Griddle of Love

I definitely have the opposite issue, having way too many worlds and saves. No renaming or moving folders required, all done ingame. That's not just me mistaking a DFHack or mod feature for core functionality, is it?

EDIT: it is just me doing just that.

Had a fort go totally berzerko on me and half of everyone killed drat near the other half. I kept playing for awhile after that and recovered. So i decided to retire the fort after it started dragging.

I checked out legends and discovered some rear end in a top hat necromancers have been setting up a bunch of agents in my previous fort so now im like thinking how the hell do i kill these dudes?

I found the tower they're in, can I just arm up some dwarves and send them in? Seems like a bad idea, just curious if others have been successful attacking necro towers.

I believe population on the world map when you're selecting it does not reflect how many zombies and other mindless undead they have floating around. So if you think it'll be fine there's just three guys, wrong, there's three necromancers and seven hundred zombies. You need a better trained, better equipped, and much larger force than you'd think to assault a necromancer lair.

Also, wear your bike helmets kids. I copped several blows to the head but my helmet left me totally unscathed.

Finally you should check out First Dog as it's a good comic I like it very much.

Necromancer towers are pretty much pushovers to a force of decently trained steel clad dwarves. The problem is you have to check everyone as they return to make sure they aren't carrying books or tablets of the secrets of life and death, and properly dispose of those objects before they hit your library and you have an outbreak. I had a room with magma safe pedestals in it that I would flood with with magma to destroy them.

Same goes with elven woodland crypts or whatevers- 70 elves plus 7500 Assault Horses.

Raids are kind of a crapshoot.

A lot of the time, you can throw a bunch of unskilled peasants with copper maces at a raid target and not only will they survive, but they'll also come out as supreme badasses because they power leveled on a bunch of zombies or whatever.

And sometimes you'll send in four full squads of legendary+5 masterwork steel-clad stormtroopers and they'll all get beaten up by a single donkeydevil in an otherwise uninhabited hovel.

I'd say you'll win 99% of your fights if your troops are in steel, but don't let that stop you from experimenting if you don't have your industries up yet. just be wary about looting necro towers, lest they bring home Fun for the whole fortress.

There's plenty of games to play in the meantime so I don't mind waiting.

As for me I'm playing other games while I await the return of adventure mode.

It is! You'll have to figure out where they were sent to, tho, and that gets trickier the longer it takes.

I think it's possible to get "rumors" or whatever, but honestly I just attack everyone until I find dwarves who have been taken prisoner and repatriate them.

Nah; for a superskilled dwarf the difference isnt drastic. Shield and Shield skill is the biggest savior of a dwarf. Make and equip woodennshields and have your militia in Ill getup and training 24/7.

A spearmaster decked head to toe to iron vs spearmaster decked head to toe in steel both cleave straight through basic nondemon nonwebbing enemies.

On the other hand urist the draftee on their day 1 will die on both sets.

Steel is a big step up when it comes to defending against iron and bronze level attacks. It's hard to say what would help your dwarves without knowing what's killing your dwarves, though. They may be dying from inexperience, overencumbrance, ineffective weapons or so many other reasons that it's hard to promise that steel will fix whatever issue you are experiencing, but it sure won't hurt.

They won't. Forgotten beast dust can carry syndromes, usually lethal.

Flavahbeast
Jul 21, 2001

if they've been in the hospital a bit they might survive, if a dwarf doesnt bleed to death they can survive and recover from a lot of gnarly rot - but the worst forgotten beast syndromes will cause them to bleed to death very quickly.

The good news is this leaves an intact corpse, so if you have a necromancer you can set up a resurrection chamber and have a 50% chance of getting your dwarf back. And I think undead will just vibe through most (all?) syndromes that would be fatal to a living dwarf

Rot can be a fun one. I had not human diplomat spreading it once. The doctors would remove the rotten flesh and the dwarf goes back to work. Then the gangrene comes back and the doctor removes it again. Repeat. The afficted dwarfs never got much work done, but the doctors leveled up like crazy.

In addition to white listing at the workshops and forges, you can use the job menu to limit the specific sub specialisations (metal-, armour-, weapon-smithing), which is less of a hassle when using work orders via the job manager with multi function shops like the forges.

I was thinking about this earlier. Found some good posts:
https://old.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/6is0nx/science_on_wildlife_spawning/ leading to http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=75780.0

So apparently there is a per-species pop-cap of 50, and if you have animals hanging about on the map, the game won't spawn you anything new. I'd try exterminating with dfhack and seeing if you get new stuff coming in.

One interesting thing from that Bay12 thread is the population setting, how many of a thing can spawn at once, being per biome. So if you embark on two different good biomes, you could in theory get twice the spawns of the thing you want.

Also: Did you know, if you press ctrl+enter, it just sends the post! I just found that out.

Yeah I didn't post but exterminating the fish got animals to spawn in again. Never did get any good-aligned creatures before retiring the fort though.

Or maybe they did and I just didn't notice before they wandered off again. I don't think dfhack has an "alert me when a new animal spawbs" tool but if it does I'd use it
