Note from last mission:

We don't yet have the overall combat mission plan for next week, so Uzi will do whatever command needs of them. However, Uzi did note that at the PRC-held end of Punta Espora (south end of ferry line of Highway 257 from TdF to mainland, in AO Arrow), there were not only PRC scouts, as we expected, but some significant air defenses and logistical stores, defended not only by 23 and 40mm mobile SHORAD, but by KS-19 100mm AA cannons as well. Objects on the ground looked like some partially hardened (dirt hardening) buildings and trucking that indicates they may be trying to improve this position or build it up as a base from which to threaten highway 257 with indirect fire or establish future anti-ship or anti-air weapons.

Also, while not primarily designed for it, KS-19s can threaten shipping/boats with direct fire and can fire improvised indirect fire toward the blue coast.

Recommendation: If available, this might be a mission for our own artillery. However, if they are committed elsewhere, F-5s from Uzi could drop LGBs on this target. Unless Chinese forces reposition significant air defenses, this requires no SEAD support. In the event that the PRC shifts any MANPADS around, we could drop these weapons from outside MANPADS range. JTAC should be able to lase targets from the friendly side of the strait [OOC: will have to check DCS, but should work]. Barring that, a plane providing laser designation and fuel to stay on station could enable a lot of LGBs dropped in fairly short order from the F-5s while keeping the other platform, an F-16, out of danger.

The SU-25 laser does not overlap with the F-5's ordnance laser code range, so unfortunately Frogfoots cannot designated for Tigers.

The Argentinian XI BDE does have a TAM VCA[M109 in game] Self Propelled Artillery battery in range of those targets, and they already have FO's working with their Recon element. I'm sure a JTAC could easily be attached to them to provide lasing for LGB's against the hardened targets while we simultaneously coordinate artillery fires on the light skinned vehicles and non-hardened targets around the same area. Air Force Commander Wonkotron, what do you think?

CSAD Command,

I have two major updates for you:
1. We have detected the PLAN Liaoning, conducting patrols in the route below between South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands, and the seas east of Malvinas. The carrier has significant escorts, and we also have seen increased presence of Y-8s and other air and maritime patrol land-based fixed wing aircraft supporting its operations.

2. For your next operation, 2x F-15Es are available for integration into your operation. [OOC: Needs to have human pilot and WSO]

Of lesser immediate concern, the CSS-7 ballistic missiles we reported offloaded are now absent from checkout areas and are unlocated. They likely moved them during our periods of satellite degradation and following the loss of some satellite capability due to PRC ASAT actions. We hope to have some mitigations in place soon.

Unless I am mistaken, charter flights for this delivery are still to be completed:

USSOUTHCOM is able to provide 4x launchers and MQM-170-derived airframes to serve as decoys in support of SEAD/DEAD. This is part of a standup program for the US to provide decoys for itself and especially partner nations in order to assist with SEAD and penetration for missile attacks in a more cost-effective and rapidly manufactured manner.

Assuming acceptance from CSAD, the U.S. will fly the equipment as far as Buenos Aires within 48 hours (available for next mission). Transport and employment from there is up to CSAD.

[OOC: GM will have final say on volley sizes and inventories and whether or not I jumped the gun on supplying this, but for now we'll say you get 4x launchers and 12 aircraft to start. Expect that you can fire 4 in a mission, unless stated otherwise by GM. Surrogates for MQM-170s will probably be unarmed wingloons or predators in-game, surrogates for MQM-107/167s when offered later will probably be some trainer jet clearly marked as "unmanned"]

[Also OOC: These can help soak up some SAMs or cause SAMs to emit/engage without AI aircraft being downed.]

These launchers can be towed by a basic pickup truck, and the drones can be assembled on site.

There was an outstanding request about S-3 Viking support. Unavailable; they are supporting weapons test and integration ops. The Vikings aren't just being mothballed or unused.

What was planned: Fly South from Rio Gallegos, cross the strait, and engage logistics assets.

What actually happened: After consulting with Uzi flight it was decided that I would tag along with them because we had similar mission objectives in close proximity. Once we were on the tarmac I decided to add a Mercury pod to my loadout. Given the light conditions and relative speeds of our airframes I took off first, hoping tonuse the low light pod to spot targets for the F5s. My RWR was constantly screaming once I got a little ways South and while I tried not tune it out the constant tone substantially degraded its utility. I circled near waypoint BOCA and then again while I confirmed there weren't any immediate threats with ABM. In that time Uzi flight passed me. I couldn't tell what they were attacking, but I noticed multiple clusters of lights with both my eye and the Mercury pod. Surely, I thought, no one would be dumb enough to leave all their headlights on this close to the front of an active war zone...

...Yeah, turns out they were and I should have made a run on them right away. As it was, I circled a bit over enemy territory trying to figure out if I was going to blow up a small town. Eventually I picked one group that (after reviewing the intel) roughly corresponded to an infantry company. I unloaded all 20 of my S-13s and 80 of my S-8s on them. Impacts were observed on target but no secondaries were observed. On the way back north I made a gun run on another company with minimal effect.

After that I returned to base and landed. Popped my front tire, which I will blame on low framerate but shouldn't have happened anyway. I rearmed but thanks to my earlier delays I didn't have time for a second run.

What went well: The flexibility in planning with Uzi flight was appreciated. The Mercury pod paid off as well. I kept up regular countermeasure usage while over over hostile territory.

What went poorly: I should have known there weren't any towns in the target area and wasted time I could have used for a second attack. I spent a lot of time flying over hostile territory, blissfully unaware of any ground fire until I had finished my first attack run. That includes no less than 8 HQ-7s that were fired at me which went completely unobserved (and fortunately missed).

The destruction of the 3 cargo ships has significantly degraded the enemy's ability to reinforce the 4th BDE and threaten our western flank.

The ground attacks against the 2nd BDE continue to degrade its ability to organize a wet gap crossing to build combat power and trap our forces in a pincer attack from East and West. Excellent work.

The continued attacks against the lead enemy formations will give our ground forces the time they need to build combat power and move to the front lines. We must continue to destroy and degrade the enemies' logistical capabilities. They can not survive without supplies.

Yeah, yeah, it's all hush-hush, but between us, my nightly exploits in Rio Gallago’s hottest clubs with the chicas was causing more buzz than my aerial stunts. The higher-ups didn't appreciate the bad PR, and just like that I went from flying high to cruising in a bit lower on the military totem pole. What can I say? I'm a man of the people, and the people love a good party. I was sent far from my newfound promised land in Rio Gallagos, to the El Calafate airport where we’ve had to move our RC-12’s due to crowding at SAWG. The orders came across the Major’s desk, and with a sigh she assigned the mission to me. Weather being clear, some moderate winds, and a departure time set for 10:00, I did a once-over of the plane and we departed SAWC.

Here's the data from the flight recorder:

INTEL FLIGHT RESULT:

The green represents ELINT results of movement, radio traffic and data transfer. The thicker the line, the more of it. The big splotches are areas of exceptionally major activity during the duration of the flight. In addition, an SA-11 was emitting from the area of the red shaded box, no precise location was able to be given.

I wanted to build a cool heatmap-looking ELINT map, but my photoshop skills are lacking.

Naval Tasking Orders (03 Mar 10)

Ladies and gentlemen, the war continues. Our cyberwarfare specialists assure us that we have developed ECW capabilities that will allow our pilots to retake the skies. Only time will tell, but I am optimistic that this will allow us to regain the initiative.

With that in mind, the following orders are issued as part of Operation Rudolfo:

AO Arrow:

The Argentine and Brazilian naval fleets are to continue their previous taskings. There may have been some delays in carrying these orders out, but we cannot afford waiting any longer. The Argentine fleet is to return to port and repair damaged ships, while the Brazilian fleet is set to sail out to sea. The Minas Gerais and her escorts must maintain the threat against Islas Malvinas and prevent the PLAN from freely maneuvering or reinforcing their naval groups. All sailors and aviators are to maintain a state of combat readiness, along with standing alert fighters and contact with P3 Orion aerial maritime reconnaissance.

The ARA San Juan and her commander Cpt. "Alchenar" are ordered to sail south, cautiously probing for the 1st PLAN fleet. This fleet has consistently managed to elude aerial sweeps, while still delivering cruise missile attacks against the Argentine fleet. It's time to make contact. Perform a stealthy reconnaissance and ascertain the location and composition of this fleet. Attacking the ships is of a secondary importance - the admiralty wants to find their weak points and exploit them. Be aware of the following intel: 1st PLAN fleet includes at least two Type 052 Destroyers, some four frigates of unknown type, and likely the Hangzhou, a Sovremenny-class destroyer of USSR-origin. The fleet is screened by Type 037 Corvettes or their equivalent Tarantul-style ships captured from Middle East and Africa. This SAG escorts and screens for a fairly significant military sealift consisting of bulk freighters, oil tankers, landing ships, and container ships, most of civilian origin, but some PLAN Auxiliary ships that are extremely similar to the Canadian MV Asterix and its like. Most of these ships are incapable of defending themselves, minus perhaps a few rifles on board and the possibility of a MANPADS (Man portable air defence system, think of iglas and stingers, shoulder launched missiles with short range).

AO Dart:

The CNS Carrera and CNS O'Higgins wolfpack under the command of Cpt. "Pyg" has been quite successful of late, and has stirred up the hornet's nest. They are ordered to now head northwest into deeper waters, as well as into range of friendly maritime surveillance and ASW helicopter coverage. If any PLAN submarines or ASW ships deign to follow, we'll be ready. If not, then we'll be prepared to reposition and resume the offensive.

«Irse a pique antes que rendir el pabellón!«

Naval movement orders executed.

What do you want done with the Chilean fleet and the Veinticinco de Mayo? Stay where they are?
What about the Ecuadorian fleet?

Very well, camaradas, let's keep on giving the PLA a hard time.

The next day of operations will be on Saturday, March 6th, at noon. Good weather and winds not too strong according to the forecast.
Support our ground forces at AO BOLT. Our forces there are under attack by PLA's 3rd BDE. Hit them as hard as possible while still being careful, we've been losing some precious airframes.
By then the ASTROS comms problem will be sorted out, hopefully, so we can have better support on their part.

We'll also have the support of a couple F-15Es. I'd like to see them dealing with their supply infrastructure on AO BOLT or ARROW.

Final report of Segundo Comandante Emilio Rodriguez, Gendarmería Nacional Argentina

At approximately 1930 local time on March 3rd, 2010 a vehicle performing refueling duties on the ramp at Aeropuerto de Rio Turbio suffered a parking brake failure. Upon equipment failure, the truck rolled backwards three meters impacting a parked F-16A. The impact produced a fuel leak onto the hot engine of the refueling vehicle which ignited.

Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting units were immediately dispatched but had trouble accessing the scene due to the overcrowding from ongoing combat operations. Off duty members of the air wing support elements raced to the scene from nearby billeting to assist with hand-held extinguishers and it is through their efforts that losses were not greater.

In their hurry to try and jockey planes out of position to allow for ARFF units to access the spreading fire, a ground crew member failed to securely place a lock in place on a tow bar on an F-16A. SNM reported that he applied throttle consistent with throttle needed to begin towing an F-16A but as there was no plane attached, applied too much throttle and rolled the tug into a retention pond suffering minor injuries.

Due to their inability to access the scene directly, ARFF units deployed Aqueous Film Forming Foam from a turret mounted fire monitor and erroneously selected a wide area spray nozzle. As a result, the fire was suppressed, however AFFF was applied generously to all eight F-16s parked on the ramp.

Investigation of the failed brake mechanism was hampered by the destruction of the vehicle, but this investigator found no signs of foul play or sabotage. It is most likely wear and tear and the high optempo of combat operations forcing deferral of regular maintenance.

Damages:
1 Iveco Trakker Fuel completely destroyed
1 Aircraft Tug destroyed
1 Ground personnel left wrist sprain
1 F-16A significant damage to right wing, undercarriage, landing gear
7 F-16A covered in AFFF and will require decontamination and reinspection before flight (OOC: Maintenance crews will double time them into flight shape before the next game day but only just.)

Recommendations:
Recommend immediate dispersion of air assets in accordance with established best practices to ensure airfield ramp capacity is not so strained.
Recommend retraining of ARFF personnel on monitor nozzles.
Recommend retraining of proper towing and tow-bar installation procedures.

Very well.
One Chilean Army NASAMS battery is at Puerto Natales airport.
Standard site, with Search Radar range rover, Track Radar range rover, command unit, and two 120B launchers, one 120C launcher, plus reloads.

There's some choices:

A: It's trucked to the frontline to AO BOLT, available morning of 05 MAR
B: it is train-transported to Rio Gallegos, then trucked to AO Arrow, available morning of 06 MAR
C: tertiary location chosen by General Humberto, with transport plan defined.

Answer is requested ASAP, General Humberto. The containers and units are currently taking space on the parking lot.

I assume PLAN will be conducting sea control and ASW operations in a zone parallel with their land forces to screen them and protect unloading operations. I will seek to define this area and then bypass it to the East rather than penetrate it directly, attempting to make contact with the main PLAN SAG. Having ascertained their location and as much information on composition as possible, I will then break contact. I will strike targets of opportunity only if I can do so without risking counter attack.

You may have noted that our F16s are operating under new callsigns. Due to heavy losses of operational Venom airframes, on 27 FEB I enacted a Panther upgrade program. To date, 2 Venom NMC jets were downgraded and made FMC, and 4 Panther jets were upgraded as follows:

For 1 Venom:
  • Remove wiring to support 4 AIM120 capable stations (STA 2, 3, 7, 8)
  • Remove wiring to support 2 HARM capable stations (STA 4, 6)
  • Assign airframe to Jedi

For 1 Panther:
  • Update software to support AIM120, HARM, TGP, and HMCS upgrades
  • Install wiring to support 2 HARM capable stations (STA 3, 7)
  • Assign airframe to Ninja

For 2 Panthers:
  • Update software to support AIM120, HARM, TGP, and HMCS upgrades
  • Install wiring to support 2 AIM120 capable stations (STA 1, 9)
  • Assign airframe to Rattler

All current and future stock of F16A MLU will be upgraded under this program at a maximum rate of 4 aircraft per day. Any remaining Venom jets will be reserved for future airframe upgrades or for specific mission requirements.

Former Panther FL and EL aircraft retain optional TGP capability, but do not have HMCS yet.

General orders for use of these specialized and extremely valuable airframes:
  • Assume a low risk tolerance ROE
  • Jedi is reserved for command discretionary use
  • Ninja is reserved for experienced SEAD pilots
  • Ninja shall not be used for any purpose other than SEAD
  • Rattler is not reserved, but experienced pilots are preferred
  • Rattler may be used for precision strike, but air to air missions are preferred

I will ensure winds are no more than 5 knot in the upcoming one.

Ok. If we have a ground rule on windspeeds, can avoid this as a weekly question. For several missions, the windspeed has been about 10-20% the velocity briefed in weather report, which affects weaponeering and rehearsal profiles (but also makes takeoff and landing at congested airfields not nearly as challenging as one would expect, so you win some you lose some).

E: This AO is very windy compared to past campaign AOs.

NERF THIS!

Hey there Gilbercitos, it's a change for today! I've been assigned to a 747, the Big Bertha, the Queen of the Skies, the Cerdo del Aeropuerto. I'm headed down to Rio Gallegos, with 85,000kgs of unsold Christmas Crackers. Apparently they're things the British pull on to make them blow up? Weird traditions. Anyway, let's sign off on this thing and hit the skies!

Yet another pre-dawn departure. Since we were running pretty near max takeoff weight with fuel and payload on board, we took just a bit more runway than normal on the roll. These late model 74's aren't as loud as their older siblings, but I'm pretty sure woke up a good chunk of Canoas with the sound of freedom commerce. No matter, once we were on positive climb, it was gear up, clean up, feet up.

Cruise went along pretty quickly, with I was paired with a different pilot for this flight, as Captain Santos was cashing in some vacation time. Captain Sotnas was a curious person but affable. We both shared a concern about our routing and landing so close to the front lines of the war, hoping that PLAF/PLAN ignored us. This was just a cargo flight, but other than an obsession with a weekly high and tight, who knows what goes on in the minds of military generals? If someone decided to reenact the 27th anniversary of KAL007, we wouldn't have any way to defend ourselves.

"So considering where we're going, what do you think we're really carrying?"

Well, the manifest said "Christmas Crackers."

"Come on, 'Christmas Crackers?' You can't actually believe that."

Hey, as long as the boxes aren't complaining about the lack of drink service, it's fine by me.

"You gotta open your eyes hombre."

...Yessir.

*smacks the center console a few times*
"Gilberto, the FMS is being finicky, looks like you're going to need to fly the approach by hand, are you up for it? Of course you are. Get to work."

Target sighted. Tally ho, here we go!

Sotnas wasn't kidding about the FMS being finicky, between troubleshooting and hand-flying, we actually turned way too late in our approach setup, so we had to extend pretty far downwind to get back on track.

Gear down, flaps down, stable approach.

----

I wanted to snap a photo post landing, but Captain Sotnas shot me the stink-eye, so this will have to do:

((Tried to take a parked photo, but after coming out of slew mode the game decided I had crashed. While parked.

Also for the GM, 85,000kgs of anti tank weapons delivered at 10am local on March 4th.))

C: tertiary location chosen by General Humberto, with transport plan defined.

Movement orders & Combat Tasking for EC 5th BG

Starting POS / Ending POS

Puta! The PLA has been unrelenting in how hard they've been giving us the gears. The PLA 4th BDE looks like they're probing for how we'll react if they start slinking off Westwards towards Dinibor, which would allow them to open a (slow) new front towards Puerto Natales. To add to that thorn in our side, the PLA 6th Marine BDE is pushing up along HWY 9, and the PLA 5th Armored BDE is assaulting NE into your Argentinian compatriotas. You had some time to recover and link up with the rest of the 5th BG after the retreat from the Isthmus, and it's now time to earn your humitas. The elements along HWY 9 are to push South and enter contact with the PLA 4th BDE to pin them in place for the flyboys, with the Dragones Armored group covering the HWY. The Western elements are to push S/SE and enter contact with the PLA 5th Armored BDE to take some pressure off the Argentinian 9th BDE.

Commando Operation: Delivery de pizza

The Compañía de Comandos Nº 5 "Lientur" has a special task for this operation. The airforce has tasked some BAI to assist the Chilean BG, and we have identified the PLA 4th BDE's CSS/HQ/SPT element as a prime target for their bombs. The air force has asked that we get one of their JTAC's in view of and in-range of the targets in question. While we could do this from the front line, LOS is limited and we would not be able to lase all of the targets. We have identified the high ground on Isla Riesco immediately SW of the PLA 4th BDE as an ideal location for JTAC work. The area is sparsely populated, not directly connected to the mainland, and has ample forests and valleys to move under cover. With the oppressive Air defense network the PLA have in place, our options are limited but we have found a feasible way in. The 3x UH-1H Hueys of the 5th Aviation Platoon "Punta Arenas" will fly a small team of Lientur's best operators and the airforce's JTAC team onto Isla Riesco, near Puesto Garay in the early morning hours of Mar 4th. The team will proceed on foot to point "PP", and then onto the designated location. Stealth is of paramount importance, the team cannot be made before the BAI strikes are completed. Once the last airforce jet leaves the area, the team is to make best speed back to Puesto Garay, and either the Hueys or a team in small watercraft will pick them back up on the Western side of Isla Riesco. It's unlikely we'll be able to pull off this stunt twice, so make the best of it Commandos!

[OOC] This is an opportunity for someone with the Combined Arms DLC and JTAC experience to step up and take on this role. Speak up in the discord if you're interested!

Movement orders & Combat Tasking for EA 3rd Army Division

Starting POS / Ending POS

The new arrivals to the front have been doing great work along HWY 255. The IX Mech BDE has been weathering the start of a PLA Armored assault, and we do not envy their position on the ground. We are tasking the EC Battalions nearby to assist, and order the IX BDE to shift slightly NW over the course of the next few days to help plug any potential gaps where a PLA breakthrough could happen. The supreme commander himself is worried about your welfare, and the airforce's will be doing a number on the PLA 5th BDE's capacity to prosecute their assault on you. To that end, the 1st Armored BDE and the Astros MLRS are also going to assist you. The 1st BDE is hereby ordered to prosecute a swift and fierce assault on the PLA 3rd motorized brigade. The tanks and IFV's should have ruinous effect on their light infantry elements in soft skinned trucks. Push hard West along the highway, and put so much pressure on the PLA that their 5th Armored BDE will have no choice but to halt their assault.

Artillery Fire Missions

The Artillery commander is ordered to manage 3 batteries of artillery. The Astros is our priority here, and they are to coordinate with the ABM and TPOD carrying AFAC's to deliver fires to the PLA CSS/HQ/SPT elements along HWY 255 at -52.677874847704, -70.85914408849489. Wait for the first wave of LGB's to hit, and follow up on their strikes after their BDA is complete and mop up what's left. Your secondary priority battery's to manage are the 11th BDE's Artillery group at -52.412946182590694, -69.71036369857987, and the EC 5th BG's 2x artillery battery's at -52.39027002447286, -70.97185257054377. The 11th BDE's artillery is simply ordered to do area saturation of targets near the PLA's side of the ferry terminal at -52.495840923583266, -69.52122414494625. A buildup of infantry groups and supply concentrations were identified here by the airforce, and while accuracy is not expected to be high, getting rounds on target around this grid square is worth the effort. The EC 5th BG's guns should fire on targets such as the 5th BDE's SAM's or their Artillery near -52.5482536292154, -70.87622919523682, if the AFAC can identify their locations. Otherwise, they should fire on the PLA tanks on the front lines via coordinates relayed from our troops.

Anti-tank munitions

Rumour has it that a "friendly" nation has provided us with a large amount of AT weapons, which were delivered recently to Rio Gallegos. We've determined this first shipment will be best put to use reinforcing the infantry BN's of the EC 5th Battlegroup, and request they be delivered via heavy haul trucks to the front line 11th Rgt.'s supply company at -52.28628093970381, -71.16090951716137, for immediate dispersal amongst the troops. This should aid greatly in the 5th Battlegroup's expected engagement with the PLA 6th Marine BDE's APC's/IFV's

AO Bolt

Ford is to patrol the Otway Sound and the Magellan Strait. The remaining corvettes of a littoral fleet were previously within the Otway, and may still be there or be attempting to leave via the Jerónimo Channel. The corvettes were responsible for the downing of an A-4 pilot, who remains Missing in Action at this time. Attack and destroy the corvettes, then proceed along the Jerónimo to Isla Carlos III. Depending on fuel and ammunition stores available, Ford may then return to the 25 de Mayo along the Magellan Strait, or continue your patrol to the south towards the Pacific outlet of the Magdalena Channel (a number of anti- submarine corvettes were previously reported in that area, but may have already departed). Regardless, sweep the littoral areas and be on watch for any surprises. There have been several previous attempts by the PLAN marines at securing Isla Carlos III, and there may be other similar detachments detected during the patrol. Use the fjords as cover in case of any SAM traps. If an enemy is detected, the flight leader should use their best judgment as to whether to engage them or mark the targets for future missions.

AO Dart

The Ecuadorian Fleet is ordered to continue south at best speed, with the intention of rendezvousing with Supply Fleet West and relieving the Chilean Fleet. The Chileans as well as the ARA 25 de Mayo have been doing some very fine work, but they are in need of some refit and resupply. Once relieved, the Chilean Fleet will likely withdraw to the northwest for a period. While the cruise missile attacks have so far delivered only minor damage, the fleet’s supply of A-4 Skyhawks has become critically low. We cannot afford the risk of running out of aircraft while still on the frontline. The admiralty has begun actively looking into sources of replacement aircraft for our usage. If additional aircraft can be found and delivered to Comodoro Rivadavia, they can then be flown down to join the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo air wing.

The naval KC-130 tanker flight has continued to perform refueling missions, but there have been reports that the pilots have been straying close to enemy lines. That tanker is ordered to alter its flight path north and orient SW to NE, with the intention of being parallel to the line of contact rather than perpendicular to it. We cannot afford needless losses, and the safety of our support aircraft pilots must be assured.

The naval P-3 Orion flight based out of El Calafate is ordered to continue their maritime sentry operations and be on the lookout for PLAN submarines. Any contacts should be reported immediately to the CNS O’Higgins and CNS Carrera.

AO Stone

The Argentine Fleet has arrived at Puerto Santa Cruz, and is ordered to engage in rapid refit operations. They have suffered a number of attacks and losses, and we need them back in the fight at relatively full strength.

The Brazilian Fleet and the Minas Gerais is ordered to continue its clockwise maneuver to the southeast. A number of capital warships from the 1st PLAN Fleet have been detected to the south, and a Chinese carrier fleet has been reported to the east of Islas Malvinas. We want to keep our enemy off-balance, while preserving as many of our attack options as possible. With the ARA 25 de Mayo soon needing to withdraw, it is likely that we will want to shift the emphasis of naval aviation to this area of operations, or supporting Air Force efforts in AO Arrow.

The ARA San Juan is to proceed with its probe mission as ordered. Good hunting Captain “Alchenar”.

Pontiac 1 Flight Plan

We'll be loaded up with 2x Magic IIs, 2x Matra 530Ds, a centerline tank and an eclair pod set to 48 flares. I'm not sure if we're still based out of Rio Turbio or if we moved to Gallegos after the last mission, as three of us landed at the latter due to fuel shortages.

For CAP we prefer a simpler flight plan, along the fence of our CAP area so that we can be quickly vectored onto targets threatening the strike. Our Waypoint 1 should be home base, with Waypoints 2 and 3 forming the CAP line along the fence. Waypoint 4 should be a rendezvous point 30-40 miles back from the fence in case we need a position at which we can regroup safely. Rough diagram below.

Uzi Flight Brief.

2x F-5s (Me, Vaha)
Mission: BAI of tgt 7-4 CSS using JTAC lasing (Type 2) and WP on 1688.
Nav: Fly SAWG direct to COLO, climbing to 25000, when SEAD/CAP clearance given to proceed beyond COLO, contact JTAC 124.00 FM.
Weapons employment: Executes 6 drops of GBU-12 (3x per F-5) using laser designation from JTAC, and then depart COLO to SAWG. Pickle profile will be as singleton then return to north holding point for other member to alternate attack in turn. Set GBU-12 fuse to TAIL. Formation flying for pickle is unsafe and unnecessary, given laser limitations and flight profile. Do not descend below 16,000 feet on drops. Fly the airplane; asymmetric employment plus nonstandard fuel load mean the pilot must fly the aircraft and let the JTAC watch the weapon and target.

Loadout will err on the side of way too much fuel given past fuel emergencies. Just work the trim during flight, and ensure fuel system properly configured prior to takeoff.

Abort criteria:
If JTAC unable, abort mission, return to SAWG.
Active SA-11 in range of attack profile (SEAD Mission Failure)

This is what the approach looks like from 25,000 feet. Prominent body of water marks North-South approach, and the CSS is slightly north by northeast of strait between mainland and Isla Riesco.

Outstanding information to make mission executable:
-JTAC callsign unknown
-JTAC in position unknown (planned to be, but not yet adjudicated)
-Unclear on condition for CAP/SEAD set. Should not be a problem, as the F-15Es and F-16s will likely beat us to the AO by a wide margin given airspeed, commute distance, and launch order per ATO brief. We should have a clear idea before we ever get to the AO whether they were successful or we need to abort and go land.

Dude Flight Brief

2x F-15E (Prime/Xeno426, Arbitary/radintorov)

Brief:

The Dude posted:

Ok peeps, Uncle Sam's finally loosened the reigns and we're finally able to stretch our wings. It'll be a long day for us, we're flying all the way in from REDACTED, we'll appear in the battlespace above El Calafate where our CSAD escort will deport and we'll form up. From there we've got 3 nav points to clear heading South, at which point we'll proceed at the discretion of our escort.

CSAD have really rolled out the red carpet for us, our targets are critical to the war effort but more than that this is a political show of force to the occupiers that America won't sit on the sidelines forever. Loss of USAF assets at this time would be a huge win for the Chinese propaganda machine and we are not going to be giving them material to work with.

Unless our escorts are in flames and you've got a J-11 up your tail pipe I will personally slap the wings off any cowboy dropping their tanks so help me Jesus, we've got a long flight home ahead of us.

WSO's, CSAD have a pretty good idea of the rough position of our targets but you'll need to put in the work to grab the targets once we're overhead. Pilots, I'm sure I don't need to remind you but remember our lase ceiling is 27,000ft - we'll need to be below this during the strike.

Good hunting.

Mission: BAI of tgt 14-5 CSS, 27-3 CSS, 3 BDE HQ, 3-3 SPT BN, 4-5 SPT BN BDE

Nav: Hot start near El Calafate, rdv with Escorts, proceed to SPOON, PLATE, COLO, hold pending SEAD/CAP clearance. On hot, push SW towards tgt locations. Egress in WPs in reverse. In case of Emergency Only, we have a divert at WP10 to Rio Gallegos - however, lets not.

(IMPRECISE DIAGRAM, FOR OUTLINE ONLY)

Loadout: 2x Aim9M, 2x Aim120C, 2x GBU-31(V)1/B (non-penetrator), 4x GBU-12, 3x Fuel Tank, AN-AAQ13, AN-AAQ14

Weapons employment: GBU-31's prioritised for HQ, GBU-12's for battalion/brigades

Threats:
* Primary threat SA-11 at Punta Arenas, we may be skirting the edge of its range; SEAD to mitigate.
* Expect SHORAD in amongst our strike targets, we'll need to stay high but under 27,000

Ford Mission
Search & Destroy

Last sortie we lost a pilot (still MIA) to the PLAN corvettes patrolling the Otway Sound. Today we have an opportunity for some payback. Our primary targets are the enemy's remaining warship assets in the sound. We do not know their exact location at this time. It is possible they are still in the sound or have departed south through the Geronimo Strait heading for open waters. Regardless, we will find them and sink them. In the mean time keep your eyes and ears open for any sign of our downed wingmate. It is possible he ejected and evaded capture.

Should we be unable to find the PLAN vessels and/or have weapons and fuel remaining after sinking them we will continue our patrol to take a peak at Carlos Island. PLA marines have attempted to take this island several times and we would like to continue to dissuade them from doing so. Should fuel permit we may extended our patrol to the Magdalena Canal. There have been reports of submarine activity in the area. Stay alert for any other hostile activity. We are not required to attack everything but command will want accurate position and unit composition of any hostile or unknown activity along our patrol route to assist planning future sorties.

Flight Plan
  • Launch and orbit at point RDV until the flight is assembled. The island at RDV can be used to correct doppler drift if necessary.
  • Push to LAKE. Check in with Buzzard prior to continuing mission.
  • Follow the blue path southwards using radar and MK1 eyeball to search for hostile shipping. GERONIMO marks the entry to the Geronimo Strait.
  • If enemy shipping is detected we will attack with Zuni rockets, retaining our bombs for repeat strikes or targets of opportunity.
  • Regardless of primary mission success we will recon CARLOS and attack targets if the situation permits.
  • If time and fuel permits we will continue our reconnaissance to ANTARCTICA before returning home.

Notes
  • We will stay on the western shore of the Otway Sound as much as possible to avoid potential air defense in the PLA controlled area.
  • The Geronimo Strait is the only passage south out of the Otway Sound large enough for a warship to pass. If we don't find them in the Otway, we'll find them in the strait.
  • Arco will be available in a race track pattern between MOTHER and CARLOS.

BUZZARD: A2G ABM - 262.00 MHz
GROUND COMMANDER - 263.00 MHz
VAQUERO: JTAC - 264.00 MHz

Plan:
We're going to depart Puerto Natales and head to waypoint 1, which should be over the northern edge of our AO (rough heading 135 from Puerto Natales). Aim to be above 4000m by the time we hit engagement range. We will engage enemy radars with Kh-58s as soon as practical, circle once to give those time to burn in, then continue the attack. If there are still radars active, we will engage with Kh-25MPUs. If radars are neutralized and fuel allows, we will engage ground targets with S-25Ls.

Once enemy radar is suppressed, call Ole to clear Uzi's F5s on their strike mission. Coordinate with them on 262.

Our loadout is asymmetrical because we're trying to conserve our Kh-58s. You'll have to counteract some significant roll once airborn and then again when the 58 launches. It shouldn't be unmanagble if we're prepared.

We're also launching heavy, so we're going to want as much of the Puerto Natales runway that we can get.

Our route. Very straightforward.

The target area. Note the distinctive shoreline.

Note for planners: Prior to this mission we are down to 4x Kh58Us and 4x Kh-25MPUs. This constitutes our entire stock of Su-25T ARMs. We are planning to take two of each on this mission. This leaves us with likely one future Su-25T SEAD mission unless additional supplies are secured. Maybe the Russians want to give us some to make it a fair fight.

We got the Su25s from Peru right? Do they have any more missiles? That's not a bad logistics hop if so.

I think its not crazy to think they did, but India is an operator of the kh25 and in the alliance. Not as easy to logistics flight them but they could be shipped or they could be in another area already closer by. Hungary and Poland, also allies and former users of the missile.

For the -58's, India again.

In addition to the states Elendil listed, The Czech Republic and Slovakia, as well as a fair number of UNA/Non-aligned states in Africa also operated the SU-25, and they may have some ARM's for those planes that they'd be willing to part with... for the right price. With WW3 on they might not be very open to it, but it's worth putting feelers out. SEAD and DEAD capabilities will be essential for future missions targeting their ground forces.

My intent: in the absence of other naval assets I will establish contact with and determine the disposition of 1st PLAN Fleet, specifically forces protecting sealift moving to the beach and the location of the SAG conducting operations further out to sea.

Mission report: ARA San Juan 4-5th March 2010

Patrol commenced at 2000 local. I proceeded East at cruise speed, come up to periscope depth every hour on the hour to take ELINT readings. Signals suggested 2 vessels acting as a forward screen, with emissions from 2 helicopters detected further south (at one point in the patrol emissions from 3 helicopters at once were detected, but otherwise never more than two).

At 0424Z(0024 Local) I encountered a Type 037-IG Houxin Gunship at S52`25`18, W66`06`47. I observed it to pass North and East over me and then an hour later reacquired it heading due south at W66. I summarised that this represented the northern extent of PLAN patrol areas. I then shadowed the Gunboat south.

Heading south I continued to take ELINT soundings on the hour, which allowed me to describe a box within which PLAN aircraft were operating. I continued until 0900Z (0500 Local), at which point I detected a Navigation and Surface to Air FCR at close range to the East. After diving and then surfacing 5 minutes later I was able to determine the contact's course and plotted an intercept. At 0930Z sonar resolved the contact as a MV Asterix type vessel - known from intel to be PLAN operated in the area. Noting the target was high value and appeared to be unescorted I resolved to attack. As I was directly in the MV's course I maneuvered SE for a perpendicular attack run.

At 0942Z and with the MV 3NM distant sonar resolved an underwater contact approximately 6.6nm away and on the opposite side of the ship. I paused my attack on the possibility that it was an escorting PLAN submarine, but at 0947Z the contact was positively resolved as biologics. At the local time was dawn I made a shallow approach, raising the periscope briefly to confirm there were no close emitters.
At 0948Z I launched a 4 NT47 torpedoes at the target at a range of 2NM and turned on a NE heading. At 0950Z indications of 3 torpedo impacts were observed.

I then sprinted for 15 minutes at full speed before slowing to a creep and continuing NE. Having put the last position of the MV over the horizon at 1451Z I briefly raised periscope and detected emissions from multiple surface and air contacts in close proximity. I continued on a bearing of 69.9 degrees (back-tracing the MV's course) until 2112Z whereupon I raised periscope again, at this point all radar emitters were located within the ordinary observed patrol box and I summarised that I had successfully evaded detection.

At the time of writing I am continuing to follow a reciprocal course to the PLAN MV of 57 deg at S52`25`25, W64`04`44. I am commencing snorkelling to recharge my batteries and intend to attempt to make contact with any PLAN naval forces IVO the Falklands to establish their operational area.

Mission file has a game breaking bug which scrubbed the mission yesterday.
We will redo it the next gameday, and we already know what needs to be fixed.

The ingame loretime will grind to a halt, so it's currently the morning and-or night before, so MSFS flights etc will be doable, as will be the early Electronic Warfare related things, which Davin will be posting about.

VIP TRANSPORT ATO
7 PAX & 200 kg surveying equipment
  • Capt. Daniel FINARDI, ARA
  • Stelios MAMAKIS, Sr. Engineer Tsavliris
  • 5x Salvors
  • 200 kg surveying equipment

Fulfilled by Aero VIP LV-WMI on 3 March 2010
(Cessna 208B Grand Caravan)

Pilot: Javier Perez

The VIPs arrive together in three cars at 5:45. Captain Finardi and Stelios Mamakis are first to board, while Mamakis' five savlors load up the cargo hold. They later introduce themselves as Dino, Luis, Bella, Marcos, and Theo.

By 6:00 we are on the runway and cleared for departure.

My son laughed at me for going to bed at 8:00, but it's necessary for a long day that starts at 5:00. And the views are always worth it.

We pass the Great Salt Lake en route to Viedma, then prepare to land at Gobenador Edgardo Castello Airport (SAVV) for refueling.

I refuel while everyone uses the facilities. With time to kill before our second take-off time, I find my son's PSP in the cabin and give it a try. The game is called 'Birds of Prey.' It is terrible.

Second Leg: SAVV to SAVC

Wheels up and feet wet over the San Matias Gulf.

Here we approach and pass over Madryn.

In no time at all, it's time to descend for Gral. Mosconi Int'l Airport (SAVC).

Touchdown, parking, and disembarking. We are greeted by several vehicles from the Port Authority who usher us away to the Luciana Palazzo downtown (after locking up).
In the morning we'll go our separate ways, but tonight shots are on Mamakis!
