Just asking here as a final place since I don't really have a tabletop presence anymore to be aware: any value in, or place that, folks would be interested in some old near-mint 4e books from up and down the line, or should I just bonfire the bastards tonight? Ebay seemed to suggest that I'd basically be losing money on shipping based on the ones that sold, so that seems out.

I know some places that have people who are still active 4e enthusiasts. I can drop a few lines there for you if you like.

That'd be swell, thanks. Lemme get home and I'll take down a listing of what I found cleaning up.

DMG (1&2), Player's Handbook, Monster Manual (1&3), Tomb of Horrors, Dark Sun Campaign Guide, Eberron Campaign Guide, both Draconomicons, The Plane Below: Secrets of the Elemental Chaos, Adventurer's Vault, Demonomicon, Open Grave, Manual of the Planes.

Has anyone tried selling RPG Books to used book stores?
I remember 20 years ago they wouldn't take them because they always had shelves overflowing with old game books, but now there's such a demand when I check the used shops they barely have anything in them.

I have a local-ish used bookstore that has shelves for RPG books and a glass display for higher value/rarer RPG books. I was able to finish up my DragonMech collection from them.

My local Half Price Books buys RPG books in good condition, but for a tiny fraction of their value - just like all the other books they buy. It's fine if you don't want some books to literally go to a landfill and you'd rather have a dollar or two than nothing. They scan barcodes and dump stuff that is out of date though so I'm not sure if they'd buy 4th edition books at all.

Half Price definitely buys and sells retro RPG products in my region, at least? I don't know if I've seen 4e products at my local, just by supply, but they always have plenty of 3e and below, weird heartbreakers from 2000, I bought a copy of freakin' deadEarth there once...

4e books can go for pretty nice prices, especially Monster Manual 3 and some other stuff, but as with nearly every similar kind of offloading if you want a really significant payout you have to do it yourself and it can take some waiting on collectors or people with poor impulse control to decide they want your poo poo.

I don't know where yours was, but the one I went to had a regular turnover of RPG books - I imagine 4E would at least get you a dollar per.

About ten years ago I found a like new (still had the original price tag) ADnD players handbook for $1 at a used bookstore, but recently when I tried to complete my set the DMG and MM were expensive on ebay.
It seems like there is a decent market for this stuff.

Yep all my 1e stuff has penciled in costs between 25 cents and a dollar because I got it all at used stores in the 90s, even my Deities & Demigods with Cthulhu and stuff in it, they had no idea what they had at those stores.

Have fun!
My local HPB's has bought my older RPG's (I had to make room for new ones!) at a decent price. I'd seem them on the shelves for a bit before they vanished, so I'm hoping they're going to a good home and not to a farm in the country.

My LGS has a policy as well that they'll match HPB's offer for cash or dollar-for-dollar store credit.

Yeah probably, but at a dollar per, I'll just keep them. The entire 4e set takes up like less than one full shelf on a bookshelf, I put several hundred dollars into buying them mostly new, I don't need $27 just to get rid of them. If they were worth $10 or $15 each that'd be a different story maybe.

Anyone have any thoughts or tips on the Modophius 2D20 system? Specifically Achtung! Cthulhu if there are differences between the games that use it.

Thinking of running a one shot of AC d20 in the near future and if it goes well a full campaign.

Oh hey, it's me, the resident 2d20 fan!

2d20 is less a "unified system" and more a "recurring core mechanic". The different systems use the same (reasonably clever) dice mechanic to differing ends. On one end of the spectrum you've got Infinity 2d20, which is a gear-porn/talent-tree game on the crunchier end of games that actually see play. On the other end of the spectrum you've got Dune, which is just Fate but with 2d20's dice mechanic.

If you think along the lines of the other "bespoke" systems like Year Zero and Cortex, you're mostly there, only 2d20 is a wider spread.

I think Achtung! Cthulhu is the most refined version of the system. It's middle crunch (and they seem to be veering away from the system's crunchy early days, because crunch costs money and effort to test, I assume). It's well laid out and edited (earlier versions were less so). I don't care for WWII or Lovecraft but mechanically it's just <chef kiss> if you want a game that does pulp action.

I'm currently running a Mass Effect love letter using the A!C rules and the attributes/traits from Outgunned.

What I love most about the system is that it's pretty crunchy, with rules for gear and weapon effects and so forth, and subsystems for things like hacking and negotiations and dungeon exploration and stealth and chases. And yet, it's all built around a surprisingly narrative core mechanic ("aspect" style "truths" and a metacurrency and allowing the narrative relevance of truths to override mechanical rules").

This creates a nice happy medium where you have a fun crunchy system where players can read giant lists of talents and build mechanically combo-esque characters, but as the GM if you're tired and you don't remember exactly how the chase subsystem is supposed to work you can just punt to the underlying narrative truthiness mechanics. The GM "failure onion" collapses very nicely.

As a system, strong, strong recommend for medium to long campaigns. The A!C iteration has a lot of great WWII lovecraft adventures and published campaigns (if that aesthetic is your jam).

Sorry about the holdup. A couple of people DMed me about the books, one made an offer for $250 for the lot and I figured it was better than I was gonna get elsewhere, shipping be damned, so I was just working all that out and confirming it was a serious offer. Thanks for all the help, though, better than expected and it means I'm getting a full case of hardbacks out of the apartment while between jobs.

Nice. 250 is way above what you'd get at HPB. Their shelves are always stuffed with 3.5 and 4e books and they're not going to shell out big bucks for more.

It uses Cipher and it's out and available, that's all I know.

Finding games as a player is hard, finding people to play if you GM is easier.

There is probably a Discord server for your particular system that you can post it and you can find some players on Roll20 if you set up a recruitment for a few weeks. I wrote a couple of posts about this earlier in the thread a few weeks ago.

I also recommend the "system specific discords" route. Still it's very much a gamble, so don't be disheartened if it takes a few attempts. As much as there are great people out there, there's also going to be tons of folk who you probably won't have a great time with, and there's not that much you can do to make the former see you when you yell into the void and not the latter. But an easy way to turn away at least some of the less great candidates is to specify something among the lines of "LGBT friendly" or even just stating your pronouns.

EDIT: We pretty much met everyone we play ttrpgs with today via one guy that joined a rotating GM game I once started on the LANCER discord.

I have never, and will never, play any of this. But I thought the casts were sick and I am incapable of not getting a bunch of poo poo from a set. So I have most of "wrath of kings" and "others: seven early sins"

I'm pretty sure I spent 40 bucks to buy poo poo I already had so I could get a KS only unique mini.

I haven't painted any of it either. It's in that tote in my basement. That tote is now full with another one on top of it half full.

This doesn't account for the model cars, Gundams, and the entire Monster Hunter game sitting in my basement.

The gear for it all is in my home office desk.i haven't painted or played anything since June 2022.
