People are so god dam weird about Sleater-Kinney and Janet leaving. It's like none has ever left a band before.

I mean I don’t even like SK but from what I observed there was a ton of drama around Janet’s departure, apparently resulting from Annie Clark’s production choices. It’s all ultimately pretty meaningless but I don’t think that “welp someone just left a band happens all the time” is the right take.

Aramoro

People are treating it like Corrie and Carrie don't have any agency in this, that Annie Clark broke up the band.

They all just decided to do something different and that's fine. That's what artistic difference are.

SK has also been a going concern since what, the 90s? That's a long time, people and visions change, especially if you're still trying to make new stuff and not just touring to play the hits.

Yeah you both make good points and I’ll take back what I said. It seems like a standard case of artistic differences, as you point out, even if the way people dramatize things makes it seem not so standard

"Eat something made with love and joy - and be forgiven"
this p4k article about her departure is interesting:
Weiss went on to discuss her relationship with bandmates Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker. “They’re not evil people,” she said. “I just think the two of them are so connected and they really agree on almost everything, they just thought, ‘We’re gonna take this band somewhere and we want to be in charge of that, the two of us.’ I think I was a threat to where they wanted the band to go, and who I am, and that felt bad to me.”

Weiss added, “They had very specific ideas of what they wanted, and I just didn’t fit anymore. We couldn’t get on the same page. It was really hard, it was not something I took lightly at all…. But I love them and they seem happy. They’re doing the thing the way they want to do it. It doesn’t have to be the three of us; it could be this pure thing with the two of them.”

anyway in searching for this i discovered her new band quasi, who are very good

I don't know who you're calling out but I complained last time so it may as well be me

I just think if they wanted to carry on they coulda done it with a different name

Quasi has been around since like the mid 90s. They were Elliott Smith's backing band for a few tours. Sam Coomes used to be married to Janet, he was part of Heatmiser too. Hardly new and it's mostly always been Sam's lyrical vehicle.

Why though? Janet wasn't even the first drummer in the band, she was the third they had already done 2 albums by then. Should they have changed their name when Janet joined?

Will Bulter left Arcade Fire and I haven't seen anyone suggesting they should rename the band. Or maybe they have I don't know much about Arcade Fire.

Tbh I think the only real sticking point, at least for me, is when they did that one music video celebrating the history of the band and edited Janet out of photos/footage where she was present.

That said I've tried to keep an open mind about the most recent output. I liked TCWH more than most while Path of Wellness sounded too boring and safe. The new album sounds like it'll be great judging from the singles so far.

Speaking of drumming I put on Twin Cinema the other day and Kurt Dahle is such a monster on that album. Stacked Crooked, Use It and The Bleeding Heart Show all make me pause to appreciate the drumming. Still my favourite New Pornographers album.

I don't think it's so much just Janet leaving, but that the post janet albums have been kind of mid, and even live, they just aren't as good. Still have the new one pre-ordered, and I hope its better than the last two, but their streak with Janet is unparalleled. If all the new stuff without Janet was great, I don't think people would care, but change is only good if it works.

TCWH's songs worked better for me when I saw them during the TCWH tour. It helped that their touring drummer, Angie Boylan, was also really good. Was hoping for a similar thing to happen with Path of Wellness but I watched their livestream at Red Rocks and it was dire.

It influenced countless electronic indie albums and sounds, even today you can hear the influence it brought. My Girls is probably the main reason it got popular. That was a massive single.

Top Class!
I wonder if the perceived injury about S-K comes from a mix of nostalgia from their arguable first peak (Dig Me Out through to The Woods) and a real return to form with a great rock record in No Cities to Love.

I'm not really a fan of St. Vincent, there's a bit too much archness and artifice to her work that's not to my taste, so I can kind of get going "Team Janet" if you just wanted more rock records.

I mean, whatever, they're not my favourite band, but they have more banging albums than a lot of bands and were consistent for a long time, so I understand even if I don't quite agree or feel that invested. It feels like "No Cities..." was a bonus rather than a new status quo when you consider what bands output is normally like after a hiatus or reformation.

They are putting out absolutely banging baroque pop right now.

They're getting the predictable industry plants stuff thrown at them. Which only ever seems to happen to female fronted bands.... Guess we'll never know why.

Like a band that's been put together by 'the industry' and then unduly promoted having not 'served their time'. I think Wet Leg is another band that gets it. Panic Shack got some flak for being plants because they became popular on tik tock.

I saw someone saying that boygenius were propped up by the industry and aren't even indie because they're on a major label.

Like I say for some reason we'll simply never know it's usually just female bands.

At that point, who even gives a poo poo? It's entertainment, so surprise, there's a lot of nepo-babies.

Is the music good? The end product doesn't lie and you generally can't get away with publishing bad music and still find success no matter who your dad is.
