That is awesome. I suppose everything is bespoke and not stock on something like this? I can't imagine a stock block can take this much boost without huge reinforcements or the block has been CNC milled out of some harder alloyed iron.

This makes me wonder, if you were trying to get the absolute maximum horsepower out of the minimum possible displacement, would there be benefits to using high toughness steel tooling alloys like CPM-10V? I assume it's probably too brittle, but you mostly see performance engines made from aluminum rather than steel and I'm just curious if budget was no concern whether you could run higher boost with a steel super alloy.

I think you're getting into cooling concerns more rapidly than strength concerns. Not entirely sure how comparable everything is, but a Space Shuttle engine combustion chamber is made out of a copper alloy. It's running a chamber pressure of 3600psi, which I believe is well above any cylinder pressure for anything ICE.
Even 3600psi is paltry in comparison to the yield strength of structural metals.

A dyno or quarter mile run is a lot shorter than leaving our atmosphere. Lots of quarter mile cars fill in the block water passages to add strength to the block.

You are battling heat dissipation vs detonation vs ductile strength of the block and reciprocating mass that you alluded to. As well as machinability to tight tolerances along with expansion rates of dissimilar metals.

Al is a nice compromise. Older (not real old) F1 type stuff where they started getting into nutso type alloys and that rabbit hole if you are curious are always a good read.

As for your heavy boost question, BMW back in the 4 cyl turbo days would crank out 1,500HP or so out of 1.5L. And the blocks weren't really anything special (they were "seasoned" from an E30 M3). Wasn't pump gas and wouldn't last 60K miles if you know what I mean.

The limitations to running stupid boost isnt the block once you get into billet

If you look at Steve Morris engines - sure they arent small capacity but if you are looking at the engines that are pushing mind loving huge power semi reliably with 80+psi boost - the block and heads arent the weak point. Failure point is usually head gaskets or valve train, followed by broken piston ring heading to carnage. Even with pistons being destroyed it's quite normal for a SMX to have the black and heads reused.

For a Top Fueller, the failure point is again, not actually the block or heads - it's usually hydrolocking when the air/fuel mixture fails to ignite properly or a supercharger failure. Even with some of the really big blowups, the block and heads are perfectly fine.

Yeah, hard to wrap your head around a top fuel engine.

Basically one cylinder from idle to full out...approaches hydrolocking.

Edit: The real mind f*ck is how few RPMs that engine does to take it down 1000 ft.

Think about the services that tow trucks provide and you'll be able to accurately predict their politics.

Roadside recovery, showing up to someone who has one of their most important possessions out of order that they need to get to work or home.

Removing vehicles from private property due to parking violations, serving landlords.

Removing vehicles from public property after arrest or parking violations and then providing storage until their picked up.

Moving vehicles after they're in a bad accident and getting paid through insurance.

Reposessing vehicles for a bank or dealership.

Basically the only things they do that doesn't have a potential for abuse or serves capital is moving your vehicle or toolbox when you're not in a stressful situation.

I've had good luck with heavy recovery tow truckers. Mostly because I called them a lot, because piece of poo poo bread trucks, and also because my tows were all in town. $125-225 for a 10 to 30 minute job? poo poo, they were all over it.

Good little conversations on the ride back, too. Just one working driver to another. Work sucks, this truck is always broken, this heat is killing me, but it puts food on the table. Where do you live? gently caress it, I'll drop you off on the way.

Always kinda neat to ride shotgun in a big truck anyways. Even better when you don't have to foot the bill yourself!

Unfortunately I was in my truck that doesn't have a dash cam but I saw the most wonderful thing the other day.

A very tricked out Mustang was sitting at a red light next to a bro truck and started revving his engine and generally being an rear end in a top hat trying to bait the truck into ?Drag racing to the next light 100 feet up maybe?. The light turned green and the bro truck proceeded to roll coal from the side exhausts directly into the mustang's open driver window. It's the only time in my life I ever thought that rolling coal wasn't stupid.
