Counting down to the day streaming services put more effort into boiling the oceans by re-encoding every show and movie with targeted ads for each user to get around adblock.

Streaming music services pay artists three tenths of sweet gently caress all, so I don't use them. I buy the music as directly as I can.

Video games makers gotta eat too. Especially indies, which is most of what I play. Unless a studio has been particularly terrible, I buy there, too.

But TV and movie studios can get in the loving bin, and so can streaming services.

Between ad-blocking and an ad/malware blocking DNS, I haven't had any issues with ads at all except I think with Pluto TV where it would occasionally think it was playing an ad so if it hosed up where I was it was a hassle to get back.

They won't need to re-encode, just change their streaming server so it effectively proxies the ad servers and there's no detectable difference to the client

The future is here, according to Ask A Manager.

> men are hitting on my scheduling bot because it has a woman’s name

quote:

> I have sort of a strange situation. I provide consulting services for (mostly) small business owners. This generally involves scheduling some meetings, and I have an email “Personal Assistant” bot that does this for me. It has a female name (which was the default), and does not announce that it is a bot (though I don’t think it’s hard to tell). It gives a standard salutation and signs off with “Thank you, <bot name>.” All it does is schedule meetings, and it’s not nearly to the level of an AI chat bot or anything. Any parts of an email that it receives that don’t seem related to scheduling just get ignored by the program. The emails show up in my inbox and I review them to make sure everything got added to my calendar correctly.
>
> However, this complete lack of personal-type interaction has not stopped several of the men (not usually the actual owners of the client businesses) it is scheduling appointments with from asking it out on dates. Sometimes this happens within the same emails that were used to schedule meetings, and once a man sent an after-hours email from his personal address (which is somehow both creepier and also better work/life boundaries? I don’t know!). So far I have just ignored these incidents and gone on with the professional relationship like nothing happened.
>
> Obviously, this would be inappropriate behavior if it was happening to an actual human assistant, and I would deal with it. However, since it’s happening to a bot, what am I supposed to do? Obviously the bot doesn’t have opinions about the issue, but if one of my employees was asking out women after a very basic scheduling email with absolutely no personal content, I’d probably want to know about it so I could address it, because it’s probably happening to real human assistants as well. What are your thoughts?

A bunch of people were rightfully pissed off when the latest MS Flight Sim released a few years ago. The Steam download was just their own downloader. So tons of people who downloaded the "game" went over the refund limit simply because it considered the MS downloader being the game running. And it took hours to download the game when it came out.

I think it's 2 hours or two weeks after purchase now. We purchased a co-op game in a sale and then didn't get around to playing it for a while, then when we finally got the group together to try it the game was dogshit so we quit just before the 2 hour mark and tried to refund it. Got denied because it had been too long since the purchase date. Which is kind of fair but also buying things and not playing them for years is the Steam meta, dammit.

I feel like it's becoming A Thing for developers to plan their tutorial missions to take just long enough that you can't refund, so that when you get into the game proper and realize there's nothing there it's too late to get your money back.

That's not what happened with Flight Simulator, but I suspect it's starting to happen more with some of the dodgy devs.

Was going to say that would just cause everyone to use a plugin like SponserBlock to crowd source skipping over the ads, but if they customize both location and duration for each individual then yeah we're hosed:

Nah, at that point you just rip and rehost. Plus, Sponsorblock is an answer to ads placed in the video by the creator, not ads injected by the service. It's not the same problem.

This has been the case for a long time. It's not really a problem for full-price games because there's not really any reason to buy it ahead of when you plan to play it anyway, but you can easily get caught out with sales where something seems worth trying at 50% off so you buy it but then don't have time to try it out until it's too late to get a refund.

I'm guessing that the "Bridge opening, do not proceed" siren was on so they did not proceed, or whatever the local equivalent is. I've seen similar videos where drivers stop in the middle of a rail crossing because the boom gates came down, and drivers who heard an ambulance coming so they stopped their car in a spot where it's blocking the ambulance rather than pull over and make room

So yeah, the answer is "they were just incredibly loving stupid"

If your game is mostly about shooting, or is an action-adventure game where you can buy things with your money, or is a city builder where you have to survive zombies/the heat death of the universe/dinosaurs, unfortunately this is not the event for that title.

Do you game-over if you run out of money? If the answer is yes, then your title is likely a good fit. If the answer is no, but the player can take out loans to try and extend that runway, then the answer is almost definitely yes. If you can game-over while you have money, then it's it's probably not a good fit for this event.

Games that are mostly about trading or bartering are not eligible for this event. Sorry, this is an event for Capitalist titles only!"
