quote:

The University of Toledo Medical Center began running on generators early Wednesday morning after an electrical incident set off sprinklers that flooded several floors of the hospital.

Toledo Fire & Rescue crews at the scene told WTOL two electricians were doing maintenance work on the 8th floor around 1 a.m. when they crossed some wires that set off the indoor sprinkler system.

The 8th floor as well as others below it were flooded with water as a result.

I'm no electrical engineer but I don't think that's how that works

I don't see why not. Some systems have electrical triggers.

yospos
IIRC the ones that are electrical will also usually trigger in case of short or other loss of continuity because that is a symptom of wires on fire.

They are also usually in the Good Conduit and the Fancy Terminal boxes away from plebeian data and power wiring so it tends not to be an issue.

Also a system without electrical triggers that *does* have a booster pump can be set off by firing the booster pump. It's not how it's supposed to work, but one of the crews at my old job set a booster to Override On rather than Override Off and...

Resetting and recertifying an entire parking garage of sprinklers is expensive, y'all.

I've read electrical fire incident reports and I can promise that connecting the wrong things is actually a pretty fantastic way of triggering fire suppression systems.

There's an updated article with more details: https://icelandmonitor.mbl.is/news/news/2024/01/10/we_ll_be_here_searching_until_we_find_him/

They still haven't found any further evidence that he fell in, but they confirm his tools were in the fissure. People went down but they haven't even found the bottom.

When you can find it. There are a couple restaurants near me that serve aged beef; the waitstaff always make a point of explaining that the flavor will be strong; apparently, customers order it & don't realize what it is.

The flavor is amazing.
