Other writers do whatever, as is typical.

I sorta feel like the reputational hit from having a Romani villain would be worth it just to remind Americans that they were victims in the holocaust, too.

Most Americans think Romani are fairytale creatures like Hobbits or Elves. This despite there probably being more people with Romani ancestry in the US than in most European countries.

Yeah but we have a lot more space for travelers, a Romani group could easily lose themselves in various wilderness areas or only interact with a few landholders in something like Montana or North Dakota. Hell our urban areas could swallow up Romani and nobody would notice. A few dozen, even a few thousand individuals are a blip in the statistics for a city like New York.

Man this is making me remember my favorite X-Men arc, where they descend into hell but it's literally Dante's hell and Colossus opens the gates of hell and Dr Strange is like "hold on now I'm just a sorcerer of very little brain but he shouldn't be able to do that even though he's cool(because he's a commie) so this must be a fake Dante hell and not the real one." And it is! Made by I wanna say nightcrawlers mom or something? poo poo I can't remember the end I'm too high Oh and storms a thief so she gets taken to the ring for theft and gets turned into a snake so wolverine has to smell her out

I haven't read much of the classic X-men but a friend who has read literally everything X-[something] related tells me that the Soviet Union being much better about mutant rights and acceptance is a plot point. Like Collosus goes home and everyone treats him having iron skin at will about as casually as if he was just a really good mason or talented gymnast. It's just something he does and since it's beneficial it's good.

I do find it interesting that a ethnic group originally from India coincidentally has a very similar name as the Romans despite being entirely unrelated. I wonder if the fact that there's a lot of Romani living in Romania is a bit like Jamaica New York having a lot of people from Jamaica (the country) despite the two Jamaicas being entirely unrelated etymologically. Which is presumably people going "hey that's like where we're from Let's check it out." Despite there being no actual connection other than the names sounding similar.

It varies; I recall one story where the X-Men visit the USSR and are informed that the official government line is that there are no mutants in the Communist world, that they're purely a 'western problem' - which feels to me like a bit of a reference to the Soviet Union dismissing homosexuality as 'bourgeois decadence'.

That's the regular Roman empire if they lived around Constantinople. A.k.a. the Eastern Roman Empire or Byzantium after they lost control over Rome. The Holy Roman Empire was centered around Germany. Yeah, medieval Europe han two different Roman empires and neither of them controlled Rome.

Alhazred posted:All minorities have the ability to kill people, that doesn't make it okay to discriminate against them. If a gay guy loses his poo poo, he has no more or less ability to cause harm than a heterosexual dude. If a black man goes on a rampage, his ability to inflict damage is likewise no more or less than that of a white man of similar means and build. If Magneto goes on a rampage, he is fully capable of ending all life on the planet. I'm not saying that anti-mutant bigotry is justified, but like it absolutely changes the dynamics of the issues. There is no reason outside of bigotry to justify keeping a registry of, say, all homosexual people or whatever. There is a legitimate national/global security argument to be made about keeping a list of mutants. Like oppression and racism/-isms are generally based on the fact you have a group of people who are, at the end of the day, not meaningfully different from whatever the societal mainstream is who are being stripped of power and agency. Mutants are meaningfully different from baseline humans. The X-Men have had their ups and downs like any medium, and I definitely know people from racial or sexual or religious minorities who found the stories empowering. And I don't think they were trying to create a cryptoracist justification for bigotry or whatever. Just, yeah, if you really want to engage with the X-Men as speculative fiction, then the uncomfortable truth is that mutants are in fact different in a meaningful way from every single IRL minority that has ever been persecuted or oppressed. Not to mention that oppression needs a power differential to work. If African folks could shoot lasers from their eyes, teleport, or control magnetism, I'm pretty sure the trans-atlantic slave trade and scramble fr Africa would have played out in a very different fashion.

Didn't want to just refer to them as Byzantium since they were called that until about 100 years after Constantinople was sacked when the point was that they spent a decent amount of time living an area where they be calling themselves Romans.
