I used to listen to Pain of Salvation a good bit back when I was in high school. But now I think it's some of the most eye rolling prog metal. It feels like the band is just taking itself way too seriously all the time and none of the music has any fun in it. Maybe I just grew out of it.

Will Rahmer owns in the same way black metal dudes own bc theyre goofy af to the world but to them they are dead serious about their music/lifestyle/aesthetic. Ill take that over power metal wink-and-nod "isnt this silly?" stuff any day.

I remember really liking Remedy Lane way back in the day but I haven't listened to it recently. I know what you mean about the "taking itself too seriously" part though. I think their next album after Remedy Lane went in really hard on whatever concept they were going for, and then the one after that, "Scarsick" was apparently really embarassing even for the hardcore fans of the band, but I never really listened to either of those albums (or anything else from the band after them) so I can't comment on them.

Ryujin, formerly known as Gyze, just released a new full-length album. It kinda varies between "Japanese Ensiferum/CoB hybrid" and the cheesiest power metal poo poo you'll ever hear, and aside from a couple kinda filler-y tracks, it absolutely loving slaps.
