I strongly feel posters of old strips should continue to just spoiler the strips where racial caricatures feature. It'd be hard to follow along if strips didn't get posted because a railway porter was in a panel's foreground.mycatscrimes posted:Gunk was a wacky foreigner but he's also a little white blond kid without any racially othering features. You seem to have forgotten Gunk's main feature, which is that his eyes were stacked horizontally in the middle of his face. Which thankfully doesn't line up with any hurtful stereotypes, but he wasn't just some generic white kid.

Medenmath posted:American football does kind of make more sense for an action hero, since it's practically simulated combat already. Or maybe he should have been a fencer, given that he fights with a sword a bunch. This comic from back in October or last year did mention Flash's fencing skills: Another thing I've been wonder is if Schkade is going to change Flash's time of origin. That is, did Flash & Co. arrive on Mongo during the 1930's or are they from the 21st century? I suppose it doesn't really matter though if the story stays on Mongo.

Saoshyant posted:I'm going with "yelling so lustily" having a rather different meaning in the previous century. Even in the 40s and 50s it would have come across with more of the modern sense. Foster uses a few different phrases (Gawain's frequent "love making" is another standout) that would have been giggle-worthy even when the strips were published but are perfectly correct albeit somewhat archaic in the usage he puts them to.

Forum accident posted:Ziggy It's weird, but I'm really liking the original '71 Ziggy strips. They have a certain flat-stare charm to them that the strip lost pretty quickly. Also, speaking as someone who actually worked on a high-school production of Peter Pan, ha ha ha, what are you going to do about hiring Flying By Foy to make the actors fly onstage? You're gonna say "Whoops, we can't afford that, something else it is!"

You're gonna say "Whoops, we can't afford that, something else it is!" There's more flying in Pan than in Fiddler, but we made Fruma Sarah fly in high school. Granted, once they got that working the shrieking laughter in her lines was much more shriek-y.
