If you’re in NYC, call 212-COVID-19 for pax delivery, and they can probably also direct you to a PCR location if you want. I got a big bag of sugar-free cough drops (but it could be any candy) and popped those to deal with paxlovid mouth — for me it wasn’t noticeable when I was eating something else, only when I wasn’t, so it was really good to be able to roll over at 4 am and grab a cough drop to erase the taste. I don’t know if it’s best practice or not, but I also took NyQuil as needed at night. I also threw in aspirin regularly because I figured why not casually thin the blood a little for the clotting disease.

quoting so the OP doesn't miss your sage advice

sleeping with pax mouth was the worst part. it would be relatively under control until I went to bed and then just simmering that taste for X hours in my mouth was atrocious.

i am also just on Grandpa Aspirin now, 81mg slow release

"State of California relaxes COVID-19 guidelines"

https://www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/news/ca-department-of-public-health-relaxes-covid-guidelines/ posted:

SACRAMENTO - COVID-19 guidelines have changed for the state of California.

These guidelines are not coming from the CDC directly, but rather from the California Department of Public Health. Statewide COVID guidelines are now the most relaxed they've been since the start of the pandemic.

Dr. Dean Blumberg of UC Davis Children's Hospital says, "What they've done is take the new COVID guidelines to reflect more immunity within our communities including children."

When a person tests positive, instead of isolating for at least 5 days, they can go to school or work as soon as they haven't had a fever for 24 hours.

"The new guidelines allow children to return sooner for asymptomatic children who are infected; they can return without restrictions," says Dr. Blumberg.

Kids who test positive for COVID and who aren't showing symptoms are able to head off to school; it's just recommended they wear a mask for 10 days indoors. The same goes for adults in the workplace.

Nick Manuselis, a parent, says, "If they don't have a temperature for 24 hours, I think it is reasonable for healthy kids to go to school." "What that reflects is that we really value children's education and we realize how much of an impact COVID has had on children's learning," says Dr. Blumberg.

"I do have school-age kids," says Manuselis, "they missed a lot and it affected them greatly, too." Of course, if parents are concerned, there are measures they can take to reduce the risk of infection.

"These include things like making sure their children are up to date on their vaccination," says Dr. Blumberg, "and some parents may choose to continue to have their children mask while at school."

The same goes for the workplace.

"I mean, if you're not feeling good then you can make your own decision. I think it's great everybody is getting back to normal. The only people who know our bodies are ourselves," says CJ Sims.

"To me it's just another sickness," says another man. "I think they should be allowed to go back to work."

"COVID is not quite there yet, but it's becoming like influenza and other winter respiratory viruses," says Dr. Blumberg.

The state's guidelines are relatively new, so it will take a while for schools to follow suit, but each school district has the option to have more strict guidelines if they wish.

Thanks, well noted, I shared a diagram that got posted here a while back about physical exertion post-covid with a friend who tested positive in the fall, and it sounded like he did pretty well following those guidelines. He's still not 100%, but we both think that the folks around here who came right back as soon as they were testing negative (or :airquote:testing negative:airquote:) and jumped right back in to pushing roadcases and lifting truss might have done some extra damage seeing as how some of them have a hard time climbing a single flight of stairs now...

Also thank you for reminding me of the advice on cough drops and whatnot. Was gonna go with nyquil tonight but my throat feels like dry crackly garbage now, so thinking about picking up theraflu instead...

Oh and as to the discussion a couple pages back about black auras, I think a big reason I haven't gotten any poo poo at my job for masking 100% of the time is because I wear all black iMask FFP2s, but that may be particular to being a stagehand. I would switch to black auras in a heartbeat if I could.

I've had good luck with the Honeywell Insight purifiers. I've got three sizes and there is some cross compatibility between the filters, which makes things a little easier to keep in stock. The little one is probably good for a small office.

these things are really hard to shop for since manufacturers will just print whatever they think looks good in marketing copy (square footage ratings are the worst since there is no standardization of how much filtration you're getting for that volume).

look for the highest cadr (clean air delivery rate, as measured in cubic feet per minute) you can get at your price point, foot print, and noise tolerance.

eg this one has a cadr of 65 cfm @ 79 buckaroos if you run it on the highest setting and it's noisy on that setting

this is 3x the cost but has both better airflow (92cfm cadr) and very low noise and it can run for over 12 hours on a powerbank: https://www.cleanairkits.com/products/exhalaron

for my money though this is probably still the best small/medium air purifier for the cost/noise/cadr: https://www.amazon.com/LEVOIT-Purifier-Home-Allergies-Pets/dp/B07VVK39F7/

141cfm cadr @ $99 and you can run it on a lower and quieter setting if you were, for example, forced to work in an open office space full of plague rats some of whom might complain about the noise

good luck and remember air filters arent a substitute for wearing an n95

tiny filter area/high air pressure/very small high speed fan setups tend to move a little air and make a ton of noise but theyre very cheap and small which is why thats theres so many on the market. most of them end up on the lowest setting (does literally nothing) or in a closet.

What's the most effective way to use one of these portable ones for something like a dentist appointment? Do you angle the purified exhaust directly at your face or slightly above so it creates more of an air wall effect?

Yeah Alice Wong is an S-tier disability rights activist. A few months back she got yelled at a bunch by a lot of the less disability aware zero-Covid twitter people for daring to post a picture of herself maskless at a museum, which is a very good example why voices like her's are important and need to be louder. It's a good piece, and depressing to read because I know that masking is never coming back en masse, a point which was emphasized to me today after getting being told to take off the "face diaper" for the second time in a month. You'd think this wouldn't happen walking down Bloor St. W. in the middle of the afternoon but .
