This game has a strange amount of hype and buzz. It looks like an ARK clone with legally distinct not-Pokemon lmao. But it's on Gamepass so lots of people are going to be trying it.

Ark was an incredibly cool concept for a game that should've been impossible to gently caress up and yet somehow they hosed it up and made a game that made rust look casual.

IMO there's been a huge niche just waiting for someone to come along and make ark that is actually good and approachable and what people actually want to play.

Game surprisingly good. I'm not a fan of the edgy tone, and the idea of pokemon with guns is really boring to me, but gently caress it, I have a bunch of cute monsters gathering resources for me as I explore the world. This is the good stuff.

ShadowMar posted:

steam version is definitely way more stable, i played for like 8 hours earlier without a single crash

also has anyone gotten pals to transport stuff from the resource buildings to storage containers like the quarry and logging building? they'll move stone and logs from naturally spawning rocks and trees they break but they seem to just let them pile up inside the buildings.
I found a guy who can only transport and craft and he's extracting things from those buildings at least. It seems like building extraction is the lowest priority job there is so if your carry guys have literally anything else to do they'll never extract from a building.

It seems like you're going to want specialists eventually because default priorities are going to get pretty wonky pretty fast. But to start it's amazing how much stuff just works.

I did learn that it's important to leave a lot of room around stuff, and even then there have been pathing issues.

I'm struggling a bit with job priorities, like it seems I need to deploy at least one pal who can only do crafting otherwise none of them will ever come make my stack of 100 arrows, even though half of them are able to craft. If I make a construction task though they all come hauling rear end immediately.

I had hoped that the labor pedestal or whatever would let you assign job priorities but it's just a toggle for forcing everyone to do overtime labor.

I've got a couple penguins that do watering, crafting, and hauling. Watering is needed rarely enough that they end up doing a lot of crafting, and hauling means they aren't ever really idle. This fact means they're poo poo at their fourth job of chilling. I've never seen them do it. Gonna need a dedicated chiller pal if I ever actually need that job done- sorting inventory to refresh freshness is working for now.

Priorities are weird. Definitely something that needs to be played around.

It kinda baffled me when I read the FAQ that said there's no crossplay but we'll have dedicated server software available. Made no sense. Now finding out that the gamepass version is a much earlier version makes it clear why there isn't crossplay.

Played a bunch today and I'm probably going to switch to Steam. Game played fined for a while but I had a bunch of crashes happen by the end. No progress lost since the game is constantly saving, but still very annoying. The game is cheap enough and good enough that I don't mind paying for it.

After the posts that clarified that yes, the developers of this meme game have interests in AI and NFTs and all these stupid crypto fads. And their development workflow uses Unreal Engine and lots of store-bought assets.

But at the same time, there is real creative passion in this work. It's not wholely original, but it does bring together disparate elements towards an actual creative decision.

Which sets it far above every other AI NFT crypto asset-flipped work on the market. That's the magic ingredient, having passion to make the silliest loving meme game you can conceive of, and the technical know-how to follow through.

If you pick up a pal working in your base (face it and press f), you can carry it around and throw it at whatever task needs doing, it should stay assigned to the task.

Mr Scumbag posted:

There are Pals whose trait is boosting your carry weight, but there's no pack animal Pal per se.

Three things to keep in mind:

You are an actual dude in these fights, not an abstract and godlike trainer. If you get bodied, the fight is over. Levels are super important for everything, because they dictate the gear you can use and the maximum level your Pals can get up to. So like....get levels. Which you do by

Capture everything ten times, gently caress it if it takes a little bit. Capturing is by far your biggest source of XP, so always grab new things and always get the most of all things. If it seems like a waste know that eventually you get the ability to spend copies of a Pal to improve the intrinsic trait of a Pal. Anything that makes them stronger is good because

The most annoying loving thing about this game is that it's Ark mixed with Pokemon, so your base is a thing that will get attacked. Here you are, trying to figure out type coverage and what to focus your building on next and then 10 religious zealots with guns will be rushing your poo poo. It's annoying. Try to build your base to be protected as early as you can and most importantly level your worker Pals. They don't need to be higher than level 1 to do their business, but they'll get loving obliterated in attacks if they aren't. Just spend a few minute throwing some levels on them so they don't instantly die. It pays off in the long run, when it stops mattering less.

Other than that it's a neat gently caress around game, nice to throw a little mouse dude with a machine gun on your head and just go off on folks.

e: Oh and make more farms than you think you need, all it takes is one cool giant Pal that is hungry to just demolish your food reserves.

There seems to be different starting locations on the smaller islands around the world, but the only way to pick them seems to be to die once, then picking one of them to respawn on.

Might be worth considering if you want a change in scenery.

Is there some procedural generation to things after progressing a bit? So far the area I’ve seen is identical to the world I made.

I made a daedream team with four of those and I can't see poo poo half the time in a fight plus they keep getting in the way during base building. Probably not worth the effort, but it's funny knocking things out instantly with a fat alpha strike.

You can control them using the normal pal aggression settings by the way (press 4 on the keyboard).

It seems to be that you just toss in one pal you want to boost, then 4 more of the same species, then it consumes those 4 to boost the stats of the main one. It also seems you can do this 4 times.

Also, be careful around shiny pals. They can mess you up with the special attack they spawn with.
I had a shiny cat in a dungeon basically one-shot me by tossing some sort of electric orb at me that hit repeatedly until I died.

you need pals that have the ability to carry things around. the sheep, for instance, are one such type. not all pals can carry things!

also sometimes the pals will just bug out and not be able to reach the area to grab the items from the station, or lose their path to the box. pals will also move any berry farm stuff to the food pit and not to a chest
might be worth building such things close to the stations to make it easier for the loot to get moved

Really disheartened that the Game Pass version still isn't updated. The statue of power is locked behind an ancient tech point but in the Steam version it's just a standard Tier 6 unlock. That and a bunch of other missing quality of life features are really putting me off, apparently Steam version even gets more arrows per craft? No wonder I'm always running out.

When's a good time to tackle the first tower? I'm level 10 and thought I was ready but while I survived for a bit my pals and I were doing almost no damage to the boss. Do I just need to grind captures and level myself up? Should I go exploring around the other "starter" islands and come back later? I guess I should upgrade to the tripleshot bow but I feel like that's going to make weakening enemies without killing them even harder, and a lot of pals are already feeling pretty resistant to my early pal spheres.

ground type attacks do extra damage to the boss, so having a few of those pals in your party will help. don't bring a water type, obviously.
the rider is the "crit" zone for ranged attacks, so aim your bow there. don't fight in melee or you'll get killed quickly
as a pal gets weak, swap them out for a fresh pal. your pals heal over time when they're out of combat, so if you slowly cycle between your pals you should be fine
if you haven't already, build a shield, and be sure to use the pillars in the boss arena to block the boss's laser, if it targets you
I had a lot of success burning the boss with the flamethrower upgrade to one fire fox pal, I imagine poison arrows might work too?
