I used to have a moderate interest in things like Columbo and Bob Ross until there was a weird pop culture surge of interest in them. I guess I still have pogs, for now.

yeah I do this too. Sometimes popularity ruins things. But: when it seems like the wave has passed, sometimes that old stuff becomes enjoyable again.

I know, I'm somehow supposed to be this island that logically enjoys/dislikes things regardless of the outside world, but I have never been that way and I'm at peace with it.

I definitely feel that. I think like, at least for me, the issue comes form the whole cultural thing of remixing everything. It's never just about enjoying something, there's always this additional element of spinning it or remixing it into new Content™ and then that ends up overtaking whatever was appealing about the thing originally to begin with.

It's like, you mention Half Life anywhere you're almost instantly going to be met with either quotes from that WayneTV HL:VR thing or whatever lines have been used in memes.

Well I've watched a few minutes of that, enough to hate it. 7.2 million views, goodness I am out of touch. I think improv is kind of only good when the actors aren't struggling and giggling the entire time :\

I feel like music in itself needs some kind of integrity, some kind of artistic purpose beyond 'lols', but then I am wanker so who knows really

I don't 'hate' them by any means, but violent movies like Goodfellas, Casino and Scarface. I've seen them once, and I don't have a desire to see them again. I'm not at all a prude but movies like that really aren't my thing.

I was like that completely when I was younger. I wasn't so much grossed out by the gore/violence (some was pretty bad) but rather the visceral realness and backstabbing and "it's just business" kinda thing. They made me feel legitimately sick to my stomach.

As I've gotten older I've begun to like all of those movies. The sick feeling just kinda went away after a while.

Yeah, I mean....there are only so many ways you can see Pesci's character fly off the handle and murder someone before you've pretty much seen all that you want to see. It's funny because I've played all the GTA games up to V, but I don't particularly care for bloody gangland movies.

e: I do wonder what Joe Pesci is like in actual real life, since he's always played guys with murderous anger issues.

it's an extremely surface level move which plays some of the mob tropes semi-ironically, and then shows the inevitable downfall which is just standard villain = failure writing.

literally the only thing it has going for it is pesci going bananas. otherwise it's just a montage with an obvious ending.

it's his worst loving movie.

I once met the real life lawyer of the real life Goodfellas guy; he had just gotten out of prison for, I think, paying to have a witness murdered??

edit: it was Robert Simels, who I guess was a mob lawyer but not actually Henry Hill's lawyer :\

The restaurant entrance is a classic, and De Niro has excellent moments like when without words in the bar he decides to wipe out all the loose ends. It was also elevated Ray Liotta especially the stressed out driving sequence at the end.

Taxi Driver was also excellent, especially the ending. A buddy is friends with one of Paul Schrader’s kids, and he mentioned his dad being annoyed at how well Joker did at the Oscars when he considered it a ripoff.

Watched like 3 episodes and nope.

I can't speak for the show itself, I've never seen it. It has a good cast and interesting setting, but it's beloved by poo poo people. I know that a lot of good crime media tends to get completely misunderstood, but I don't want to go through that again.

Anyway, my friends brother has a moderately successful retro 50s/60s rock and roll band and they got booked to play a "Peaky Blinders Casino Night" which was just guys (and i mean guys, more sausages than the Oscar Meiyer factory) dressed normally but with flat-caps while the band played 50s rockabilly. They were as confused as we were why they got booked, other than doing a thing that's "old", but a paycheck is a paycheck.

people's taste in music has nothing to do with the music itself, they just want some taste maker to tell them what to like. if all their friends listened to it, it'd be the coolest thing since hot grease.
