virinvictus posted:what's a good recommended first time build? too much freedom for stat picking stresses me out there isn't really one, though I'd say broadly if you want to play as a pretty straight detective start with 5 Intellect and then either Logic or Encyclopedia as your signature stats. starting with at least 2 morale and physique is good because it gives you a bit of a health buffer while you're learning the systems. i do agree with the advice from earlier that the game is generally best experienced as a specialized character rather than a generalist, regardless of what that specialization is.

It doesn't matter in what. Be weird. Go nuts.

sensitive also starts you with high volition and endurance so you are less likely to have a heart attack/colossal meltdown but I did thinker on my first run and fell in love with encyclopedia, my most precious child the central thesis is that you can't actually go wrong, but leaning into something is cooler

I would say a minimum of 3 in volition and endurance just prevents you from accidentally stumbling into a couple of early 'oh I guess I just die here' moments that are a shock if you don't know they're coming. For a first run I'm also sensitive cop. Most skills have their time to shine, but fundamentally this is a game about talking to people lot. The game is pretty generous though. You can keep a float of 1-2 points ready to pump into something crucial you really want to pass, and you'll acquire a large clothing collection to provide stat buffs.

Railing Kill posted:Indeed, *~Brattan~*. Indeed. Visual Calculus is my favorite skill by far and I dont remotely regret just dumping points into it my first run, with a secondary focus in encyclopedia. Its definitely my canonical Harry skills. My first Harry was Int/Motorics and it really makes you feel like a super competent badass cop who is also an absolute mess and fuckup of a person and I really loved it. My soul was tiny and my strength laughable, but goddamn if wasnt good at pulling off those magic moments figuring poo poo out. GlyphGryph fucked around with this message at 23:53 on Jan 21, 2024 |

2/2/2/6 As a motorics focused cop who uses clothes and drugs to do other things makes you worryingly COMPETENT. Not the same as fun. Or cool. But if you want to feel less of a loser, it's neat.

A great thing about this game are the endless great descriptors like 'worryingly competent' which one can use to describe their officer. I would say that mine ended up as a savant of intuition. Terrible at reading a crime scene, but utterly excellent at reading a room. the uh, body, was a bit of a problem but it led to more content in the end!

I think i played 2/4/3/3 and can't remember what I specialised in, something dumb like I think I guessed which skill lockpicking was because I thought this would be a more typical RPG. I had no idea what I was doing and had terrible stats but still had fun. Probably don't want any stat lower than 2, but basically you can't go wrong unless you give yourself a 1 or all 3 stats, and then just accept that whatever the dice rolls, goes. E: Don't skip hand/eye co-ordination. There's a check later on. It's important.

I just went down the line left to right and paired ideology with what seemed like the corresponding skills and went 1. Intellectual Communist 2. Sensitive Moralist 3. Physical Fascist I can see the case for doing a sensitive run first, but I appreciated having the world building firmly fixed in my head for the subsequent runs. And if you are going to do a fascist run I think it is best to do it last because at that point you firmly know what the game is about and I think that makes it easier to contextualize its commentary on the subject.

From playing the game Rhetoric seemed like the skill that was mostly associated with communism. Empathy seemed like it tied with moralism, but in like a kind of hollow way. In fact, I think those are the skills that guide you into those respective ideologies

the game does explicitly pair rhetoric (and therefore INT) with communism and empathy (and therefore PSY) with moralism. it does fit rhetoric being more interested in arguing than doing, 0.000% of communism being built in favor of precise models of this duplicitous world, etc oh as I hit post preview I see this point has been brought up. yeah, rhetoric introduces the communism thought, empathy introduces the moralism thought (and savoir faire does ultraliberalism, endurance does fascism). volition does have the extremely powerful "you should build communism precisely *because* it is impossible" line, but the crownhead is so important that it has its fingers in a lot of pies

That's weird because I associated rhetoric with debate bros and therefore libertarians.

Rhetoric is the big communism voice, but it puts a sarcastic spin on everything. Volition is the truest and most reliable voice, and if you force it to weigh in on politics, its appeal to communism is devastatingly sincere.

IIRC volition only weighs in if no one else does. I won't go so far as to say that he's apolitical, but I don't think class analysis is at the root of why he tells you to build it.

Volition says you should try to build communism precisely because it is impossible. Volition also tells Rhetoric to settle down and encourages you to gently caress off when Rhetoric tries telling you to say one of the fascist or communist things or gently caress off to Reene and Gaston.

the skills are simply ways that make sense for the detective as vessels for an ideological voice, but the categories themselves have nothing to do with it. Endurance simply espouses for fascism because for our lieutenant it does make unconscious sense that the aspect also responsible for the lower intestine (and thus literal poo poo) should be the one to talk about it

I would agree. There's nothing tonally or mechanically in the game preventing you from building your detective as a highly physical communist, or an intellectual fascist or w/e. But just for me, going through the game as three separate archetypes those were the ways it made sense for my own playthroughs to arrange them. The next post immediately disagreed with me, and tbh I think that's neat they saw that arrangement differently.
