NihilCredo posted:So, from the last time we saw Sunny up until the middle of this strip, Calder was able to use telepathy and cast spells but still physically immobilized by the stasis circle. But we know he wasn't mentally awake all this time (which would frankly make his revenge extremely sympathetic, locked-in syndrome is nightmare torture stuff even when surrounded by caretakers and loved ones), because he mentions that he is unaware of the amount of time that has passed. So I'm confused about how those circles work, and I don´t know if I'm supposed to be. (time for me to do tedious d&d grognarding for a comic that largely uses the rules as suggestions rather than as ironclad laws of the universe) My conjecture is that Calder actually was awake, for potentially decades, due to partially resisting the stasis trap or some other means, and that they could still cast. Red dragons can cast Suggestion 3 times a day if they are at least Old age or greater, and Suggestion has no somatic component. That being said, I'm not exactly sure how Calder managed to speak commands to Sunny from that distance. Maybe the Ventriloquism spell? They have the same range, Ventriloquism has no somatic component, and dragons can cast regular spells too like a sorcerer. I don't think that the Suggestion verbal component necessarily includes the command, so Calder could cast Suggestion, then Ventriloquism, and whisper one/many command(s) to Sunny specifically without the others overhearing. No telepathy required.

NihilCredo posted:Not sure if I missed something or if we're not supposed to know at this point, but how was Calder able to charm Sunny in the previous strip? At first I thought the lens had fallen off by accident (it's roughly in front of the position where Sunny was last strip), but then we have Calder specifically ask him to antimagic-eye the circle in this strip, and then the dragon gets to move. He may not have been completely physically immobilized, just trapped in the room. There's a bunch of burn marks and claw marks on the walls of his room, and I doubt he made those just now.

Maybe the remainder of the comic run is 100 strips of Roy trying to attrit the dragon down to 0 hp by throwing a sword at it

Forcing people to fight for you. Where have I heard it before. Y'know, just before this encounter, they had a talk about how Serini got her old crew to make the dungeon, except Soon? Now, dunno about what magic he could have helped her with, but as far as design flaws goes, he could spot two: One, that this thing's a solo operation, with no back up if (and when) Serini died - even after her troll-ization, it's still minions, rather than heirs. Two, if anyone's gonna say "even if they're evil, drafting unwilling monsters to do your bidding is wrong", it would be him (cause they still have rights, or cause she should smite 'em instead? Probably the former).

The thing is that Calder was using mind control to enthrall unwilling people to do his bidding until the Order of the Scribble stopped him

Eh, I've been around the internet long enough to know he probably had a bunch that were (very) willingly enthralled as well. People have odd kinks, but I won't shame.
