Like, I understand most of these they'll affect different people differently child abuse, animal abuse, emotional abuse, adandonment, racial slurs, whatever can really trigger stuff in some people while others probably aren't a fan of seeing it ,it won't cause a severe emotional reaction, but "Does a person leave a conversation without saying goodbye?"

When you filter it to be just that, it seems that people are interpreting this as "someone is expected to come back but doesn't (usually because dead)"

I had a truck driver who worked for me who moved over from Africa and had only driven in the southern US before coming to work for us in New England who just assumed you could drive through snowbanks and they would scatter like dust. Turns out this is not how snowbanks work.

I knew a guy who drove a plow and would treat snowbanks that way. One time the snowbank was actually a parked Volkswagen covered in snow.

Ashcans posted:As someone who didn't see snow until their 20s, it comes in a surprising variety. It can behave very differently depending on how clumpy or wet it is. The ideal skiing snow is powdery, which means that it is fresh fallen and cold enough that it isn't sticking together wetly. It's fine to fall in, and if it's deep you can basically vanish into a big puff of it and come out fine. But, as snow sits it will settle and compact, and even if it stays cold it will melt in sunlight and then refreeze. If there is any warmth or rain this accelerates, and you can end up with very heavy slushy snow that is a lot less fun. You can also get areas that have melted a little and then frozen into patches or even a sheet of ice, which is very hard and unwelcoming. Most skiing locations will try to 'groom' the slopes, in that clip you can see the lines of the slope where they've basically done some landscaping to improve it. But on big mountains they might not have done this everywhere, and the edges of the run don't get the same treatment, so if you are a bad skier you can barrel off the side of the groomed area and fall into ice. I love the snow and snowy climates, but reading about avalanches and what you're supposed to do if you get caught in one has made me really comfortable with just enjoying the snow in nice, safe, city environments (The advice is to try to treat the flow like water and stay floating as long as you can. Apparently you can kind of swim in it when it's moving like that. If you've been pulled under by the time it stops you should try to scoop some snow out from in front of your face before it fully settles which will buy you maybe thirty minutes of oxygen if you're lucky so hopefully someone can find you before you suffocate to death. Once the snow settles it's pretty much as rigid as concrete so you're absolutely hosed unless someone else digs you out)

It looks to me like maybe an ambulance or something came down, everyone pulled over to the shoulder, but maybe the traffic hasn't allowed them space to get back on? I don't believe these turkeys are being fooled by a broken down semi on the shoulder. Over here in Europe it's standard praxis to sit on the shoulder if the exit off the highway is clogged and doesn't move. That way you aren't clogging a line of the highway causing even more traffic jams. If you don't actually see the front of the Jam and this place regularly clogs up it may just be something they expect to happen and lined up nicely.

I haven't been in one myself but I hear that one major impediment to digging yourself out of an avalanche is that you probably have no idea which way is out while you're in it.

It's not that soft anymore then. Also just had a thaw after lots of snow and cold and the packed ice layer in my driveway turned to slush. I tried removing most of it but it was impossible. Now it froze over again and it's horribly uneven and difficult to walk across. His Divine Shadow has a new favorite as of 10:26 on Jan 25, 2024 |

Good luck if you’re taking any form of public transit! Why yes a country well known for snowing all the goddamn time is terrible at handling it on multiple fronts.
