Rattler AAR

Depart El Calafate as a Two-Ship with my wingmate callsign GORSON. Climbed fast and sleek up to F-15E rendezvous altitude.



The Viper is a fast and aerodynamically smooth snake with just a pair of 120C's on the wings. We proceed to our hold point, orbited, and watched as Pontiac downed those J-7's. After this CONDOR moved us south about 15nm. A single J-7 headed north and we pushed up to intercept. I fired first with the plan for Gorson to fire a second shot if needed as I broke. The J-7 attempted to dive but the 120C knocked him out. The 2nd J-7 turned tail and we moved back to the hold point. After about 10 more minutes we RTB'd.



We landed with 3X120C, tanks retained, no damage.

We'll be focusing this time on AO ARROW for a change. The Argentine 11th Mech BDE is under attack over there and we have to hurt the enemy a bit more on the east. And we definitely don't want them crossing the strait. They're in Tierra del Fuego to taste exactly that, fuego. Hit their supply units and infrastructure and their artillery as much as possible.

As a secondary objective, although AO BOLT is not the focus this time, attack the PLAGF 4th BDE as well. The enemy on the west's not supposed to have a break either.

Air Tasking Order: Repair Argentine Carrier

Suggested Aircraft: ATR 72 (freeware) / BAe 146 (payware)
Payload: 5,000 kg
Route: Puerto Belgrano, Argentina to Puerto Montt, Chile (SAZB > SCTE)
Distance: 950 km / 515 nmi

A medium cargo aircraft is required for the transport of equipment needed for the repair and resupply of the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo, as well as the associated Chilean Fleet. After extensive combat action, the battle group is returning to the vicinity of Puerto Montt, Chile for refit activity. In particular, a PLA cruise missile attack injured a number of sailors, including the executive officer, as well as damaging the navigational radar aboard the Mayo. While this is considered a non-critical subsystem (there are many different types of radar systems aboard aircraft carriers, not to mention the fleet as a whole), the lightweight antenna nonetheless merits immediate replacement. Notably, while most of the equipment needed by the naval fleet can be supplied by the Chilean regional depot at Puerto Montt Naval Base, the specialized sensor is not available as the Chilean Navy does not have a carrier. As a result, that radar will need to be flown in from Argentina.

The Puerto Belgrano Naval Base is the heart of the Argentine Naval Supply Command and stores the replacement A/N SPS-40B radar that is required. The charter pilot is needed to collect that subsystem as well as its associated electrical equipment and deliver it to Puerto Montt for subsequent installation. Loadmasters will be available to oversee the loading and unloading of this bulky and sensitive payload, which has been palletized for aerial delivery. The completion of this ATO will permit the rapid readiness of the ARA 25 de Mayo.

The current campaign situation appears fraught with danger for our forces. The naval campaign has been one of cat and mouse, with the overwhelming Chinese superiority on the surface being only barely held in check by our success in the air and below the waves. The Patagonian fjords have been excellent defensive terrain for our Argentine carrier squadrons, who have been generally successful at contesting control of the Magellan Strait, but the gradual attrition has worn down the handful of A-4E Skyhawks available and the carrier fleet has been forced to withdraw for repairs and resupply. It will be critical to secure additional aircraft as soon as possible - either from the mothballed stocks of our American friends, or elsewhere from around the world. It is believed that there are still dozens of A-4s housed at the AMARG Boneyard in Arizona, which may potentially be made available to us upon request. Alternatively, there are currently 11x Skyhawks being offered for sale by the Royal New Zealand Air Force, as well as 6x Skyhawks being offered by the German arms conglomerate BAE. An American company is attempting to purchase them and establish a dissimilar fighter training school called Drakken International. They are emulating the Top Aces Aggressor Squadron, a company which hires expert veteran A-4 pilots to train American combat aviators. If SCAD is able to prevail upon their respective governments on national security grounds, we may be able to outbid Drakken International and secure those airframes for our own usage. Your support in this effort would be invaluable.

In the long term, I am advising that the South American Combined Armada maintain a strategy of channelization - limiting the capacity of the PLA to maneuver their forces and ensuring that they must continue attacking into the coherent defenses offered by the combined ground and air forces. We have been able to hold the line, if barely, due to the favorable terrain and consolidated forces. This task would become much more difficult if the PLA were to expand the scope of their offensive. In pursuit of this strategy, the navy is continuing to interdict the Magdalena Channel, raid the edges of their formations, and contain their attack to a limited axis. Their current offensive in Punta Arenas involves multiple wet gaps leading all the way back to China itself. It is a herculean and unsustainable effort. If we can maintain this course, we can limit their opportunities and eventually exhaust their forces.

Naval Orders - 07 MAR 10

AO Dart (Chilean Sea)

The 25 de Mayo and the Chilean Fleet are to be congratulated on their performance thus far. The group is ordered to sail for Puerto Montt for repairs and resupplies. Hopefully by the time that refits have been complete, we will also have secured additional A-4E Skyhawks to equip the air wing. The Ecuadorian Fleet is welcomed to the fight, and ordered to occupy the defensive positions in the fjords previously held by the Chilean Fleet. We do not want to allow the PLA to gain a foothold in Patagonia. Be prepared for air and missile strikes. Also, notify the captain of the BAE Shyri to expect a package of Argentine commandos, due to arrive by helicopter once they have been transported into the region.

The CNS Aquiles AP-41 has delivered their cargo of Chaparral air defenses, and is currently being loaded with a group of refugees attempting to flee the zone. Rumors of PLAGF offensive successes in Punta Arenas have created a chaotic atmosphere and a flurry of evacuations. The twin highways have been clogged with vehicles making their way north, and the major ports and airports have become filled with tent cities of fearful civilians. Getting as many of them as possible out of the zone is a humanitarian requirement in addition to a military one. The CNS Aquiles will sail for the port of Antofagasta, Chile - a major naval depot, regional capital and international airport.

With the available PLAN submarine forces detected in the Argentine Sea, and their ASW escorts heavily depleted (both from previous attacks and diverting forces into the Magellan Strait), now is the time for our Chilean Combined Attack Group to strike at the 2nd PLAN Fleet. Their locations have been identified by our E-3 Sentries, and transmitted to the CNS O'Higgins and CNS Carrera. A number of frigates and a destroyer have been sighted. Seek them out and attack them.



AO Stone (Argentine Sea)

A number of radar and sonar contacts have been detected throughout the coastal region between Rio Gallegos and the Islas Malvinas. The 1st PLAN Fleet is believed to be making a push north, supported by submarine forces. This group needs to be confronted before they are supported by the incoming 4th PLAN Fleet and its carrier flagship. The ARA San Juan and the Tupi are engaging with incoming contacts and attempting to fend them off. The NAel Minas Gerais and the Brazilian Fleet can offer limited helicopter ASW support in the area - particularly to the Tupi. They are to maneuver closer to their support fleets at Puerto San Julian. The Argentine Fleet is finishing up their repairs at Puerto Santa Cruz, and will attempt to defend themselves and the port. Carrier and shore-based aviation squadrons are being activated to assist in this operation. Once the Brazilian Air Force P-3s are equipped with Harpoons, they will also be able to rejoin the defense of this AO.

Naval Aviation Orders - 08 MAR 10

Estacion Aeronaval Río Chico Established

The need for sustainable access by naval aviators to runways and supplies that are near their area of operations is increasing. While the carrier ARA Veinticinco de Mayo is withdrawing to repair and resupply, her remaining squadron of A-4E Skyhawks are still in the fight. Much like the Argentine Skyhawks of the Falklands War, who launched 149 sorties from San Julian Airbase against the British forces on the Islas Malvinas despite the great distance ensuring that they had only two minutes of fuel on station.

With that heritage in mind, Naval Supply Command has performed a survey of disused airfields throughout the region and has identified a number of good candidates for rehabilitation and military usage. The first naval air station to be established is EAN Río Chicos, Argentina (to be given the temporary identifier SARJ). Only a few kilometers from the Rio Gallegos Airbase, and still within the confines of the city, this airfield is ripe for expansion. It would provide additional parking and runway space for friendly forces, while staying within the air defense envelope being created by NASAMS batteries and the ARA Intrépida. The existing naval ground crews at EAN Rio Gallegos shall transport their needed supplies and equipment and establish a naval air station. The facility will be available to friendly forces and its 1,095 m / 3,593 ft asphalt runway can be put to good use by short-field jets such as A-4E Skyhawks or MiG-29S Fulcrums.



AO Arrow (Tierra del Fuego)

Leaving the fjords with our mission incomplete was tough, but once the ARA Veinticinco de Mayo and the Chilean Fleet was out in open water and steaming for Puerto Montt, the admiralty was comfortable with ordering the remaining squadron members of Ford 1 and 2 back into battle. After ferrying your fighters to EAN Rio Chico, still under refurbishment, they are to refuel and prepare for a new mission set. With the Ford 3 and 4 squadrons aboard the distant Minas Gerais dealing with multiple threats in the Argentine Sea, your job will be to keep fending off Chinese advances while we wait for the Mayo to return to the fight.

Like the F-5E Tiger IIs of Uzi Squadron, the A-4E Skyhawks are excellent strike fighters on both sea and land. In a deviation from past missions, this operation will be focused on ground targets on Tierra del Fuego. PLAGF troops are swarming the peninsula of Puerto Progreso, and may be massing for an amphibious invasion. Multiple attacks on the area have slowed Chinese progress on this front, and Ford's role will be to continue that pummeling. The entire area to the north of Franco Bianco Airbase (SCSB) is to be considered a killbox, but be aware that there have been reports of HQ-7s, ZSU-23s, KS-19s, and Strelas, as well as a formidable backstop of an SA-11 deployed to the south. PLAF J-7 fighters have been spotted in the area before, and disrupted previous F-5 strike missions. Colt Squadron has been tasked with providing that AO with CAP, and will be hunting for those J-7s.

While I would suggest attacking the most exposed targets to the northeast of the peninsula, ultimate target priority will be left to the squadron leader, who is advised to consult the strategic map and plan with flexibility. Mitigating Chinese air defenses will likely be a concern as soon as you cross the Magellan Strait. Identify a target, drop your ordnance, and then return to Rio Chico. Consider the advice of Uzi squadron leader "Muhlump": "Biggest challenge down there (so far) hasn't been the enemy's weapons, it's that there's really zero terrain to mask you, so we just go in above MANPADS, dive once, climb the gently caress out. A-4 might struggle more with the 'climb the gently caress out' part of that."

As noted in the memo to our defense ministers, we will have the AT weapons dispersed amongst the infantry Regiments of the Chilean 5th BG. This should help slow the PLA armor if they decide to push hard in this direction. We are also going to withhold the use of the MQM drones until the Air Force or Navy requests their use. The Attrited NASAMS battery will also have arrived in Rio Turbio while the fresh one takes it's place in Rio Gallegos, so we will have that in place to the south to screen PLA cruise missiles and aircraft. The Chaparrals and their trucks are to utilize the highway route to Rio Turbio to travel at full civilian highway speeds, utilizing civilian heavy haul trailers for the Chaparrals themselves. It's an 18 hour drive, so we Anticipate the unit to arrive in Rio Turbio on the 8th after two days travel, and to be ready for deployment at 5th Div, 5th Log. Base "Magallanes" North of AO Bolt by the morning of the 9th.

Movement Orders, Mar 6-8
AO Bolt

We are shifting to a flexible defense on this front. The unit of EC 5th BG that were tasked on the East side of the Lake are ordered north to the Supply base, to be prepared to respond to the side that receives the most pressure from the PLA. The units in contact near Tres Chorillos are to shift as shown and continue to keep the PLA 4th honest by maintaining an arms-length engagement with them. The AT detachment shall be integrated with the Infantry Battalions in this area. The Argentinian elements are going to stretch out to fill the gap, and draw the PLA East by staying firm on the North flank, and slowly withdrawing North/NorthEast if the PLA put pressure here. Our intent is to goad the PLA into pushing down HWY 255 to the East rather than make a run for us to the North.
AO Arrow

The EA 11th BDE is starting to receive heavy IDF in this sector, which makes us worry that they are trying to soften us up before they go for a crossing. The Brigade is ordered to take up more sheltered positions in the ridgeline to the North, and the recon element is to conceal their vics and take up concealed observation positions near Punta Delgada. The Military Intelligence and signals company are ordered to the SE tip of the mainland at Faro Punta Dungeness, and set up ELINT equipment to try and collect SIGINT from PLA naval/ground units. Their comms are mostly encrypted but the volume, frequencies, and direction is still useful data for our intelligence analysts. Perhaps they can identify some patterns after a week of collecting and collating this data.

Astros/Land based Exocets, AShM refit
The Astros battery is ordered to move with all haste up HWY 255 to SB 'Bolsa de Tenancia', and refit to their X-300 AShM cruise missile magazines. If there are any of the Falklands war-era MacGyver'd land based exocet launchers still in the depot at the 25th Regiment's base in Rio Gallagos, they are to be brought up to the SB and integrated to make an impromptu AShM shore battery. There are an extremely limited amount of missiles available for this task, and we are likely to only get a single volley of missiles out of this gambit. Let's get them prepared, and attempt to coordinate their deployment with the Navy's efforts.

As part of a survey of minor airfields in the region that can be refurbished and contribute to the war effort, Naval Supply Command has identified a small airport near the riverside community of Bella Vista, Argentina (51°51'47"S 70°37'15"W) as being a potential site for a Forward Arming and Refueling Point, or FARP. These dispersed facilities primarily exist to service helicopters or as temporary layover points for transport aircraft, but military authorities around the world - and particularly those in Eastern Europe - have become interested in also using them for fixed-wing / STOL aircraft as well.

In addition to an existing dirt airstrip used for civilian flights, Bella Vista is located along Ruta 40, which may provide a firm runway for combat aircraft capable of operating in an austere environment. Equidistant between Puerto Natales and Rio Gallegos, it would provide a welcome respite for fuel-hungry jets transiting to and from their areas of operation. Plus Bella Vista is far enough from the Punta Arenas frontline to host an aviation squadron with some degree of safety. The town is also sited along the Rio Turbio Railway, which will simplify logistical transport concerns. Local civic authorities assure our officers that temporary accommodations in the town can be made available for crew housing and other needs, while additional base facilities are constructed.

However, it remains to be demonstrated that the highway near Bella Vista can actually be used by military aircraft. We need to send out a surveyor to locate the site and perform the first landing. If the road is not sufficiently straight, wide, or firm enough, we may be forced to look for another FARP location in this region. An OV-10 Bronco reconnaissance aircraft might be well-suited for this task. A straightforward alternative would be an A-4E Skyhawk or AV-8B Harrier, whose pilots will likely be soon operating on this airfield or one like it.

Briefing
Rattler 1 will take off from SAWC and proceed via SPOON to PLATE and hold position there until OLE is called. The objective is to strike at two CSS battalions in target area ARROW to deny enemy frontline units with the necessary logistical support to sustain their offensive. Primary objective will be bunkers used as equipment stockpiles which command guarantees can be destroyed with a single GBU-31; as such the second bomb each jet carries can be used on any available target of opportunity with command and control vehicles and concentrations of logistic vehicles being the ideal secondary targets.
Flight and Element Lead will be equipped with TGP and will provide coordinates for their wingman
Once weapons have been delivered, Rattler is to egress to PLATE and RTB at SAWC.
BOCA is provided as a reference IP located just North of the FLOT. Due to the presence of SA-11s in the AO, it is recommended to approach the targets from the water. Command recommends using the following ingress and egress routes


Additional Remarks
While we will be supported by SEAD, due to the lethality of the SA-11, if one such system is detected by the RWR it is imperative that pilots go evasive immediately and reset back to the holding point while calling ALPACA on the radio so that supporting SEAD can try and suppress the site/s. Due to limited combat-ready airframes and limited stores of US-made ammunition, survival of the airframes is paramount.
The SA-11 has a maximum range of approximately 18 nautical miles

Contingencies
If SA-11 is active in ARROW, Rattler will abort attack and egress back to holding point
Rio Gallegos is available as a divert field in case of combat damage or hot-pit refueling. Due to the regular rocket attacks, it is not to be used as a recovery airfield
Puerto Natales is available as a divert field to refuel from. Due to the limited space available it is not to be used as a recovery airfield
If Shell is airborne, it can be used for air-to-air refuelling

It does not have to be in official memo format (though that'd be neat with the letterhead and all), it can be a neatly laid out forums post.
Why are we writing memos in the middle of the war? Because war is hell.

Ministers,

It is the recommendation of Combined Air Combat Command that there be a shift in focus in the coming week to SEAD/DEAD heavy mission planning. The tactical purpose of this shift is three fold:
  1. Secure air superiority to enable lower risk attack missions against enemy logistics
  2. Enable helicopter forces to operate in the battlespace
  3. Force the enemy to reposition air defenses away from strategic locations (e.g. Punta Arenas)

To support our operations in the long term, CACC formally requests that all efforts be made to lobby the United States State Department to export additional supplies of AGM-88 HARM missiles as well as AN/ASQ-213 HARM Targeting System (HTS) sensor pods. A single HTS sensor pod allows an F16 to observe the entire battlespace and enable other HARM capable F16s to launch the missiles in their loft attack mode. This attack mode has vastly superior range and kill probability against enemy air defense RADARs and does not require the aircraft to point directly at the threat in order to launch. Two HTS pods enables a flight of F16s to reduce response time when attacking enemy RADARs from minutes to seconds by sharing information between aircraft via datalink.

  • Without sufficient HARMs, the enemy will have an opportunity to diminish air superiority by deploying additional SA-11 batteries closer to the front lines.
  • Without HTS, the air forces must continue to place HARM capable F16s at significant risk during every mission.
  • Without HARM capable F16s, we risk our air superiority on this front.
  • Without air superiority, the front will become unsustainable.
  • With sufficient HARMs and HTS, we can secure air dominance by destroying enemy theatre wide SAM systems (i.e. S-300)

We need these items as soon as possible.

Honestly: I haven't the faintest idea, and I've flown a few missions :shobon:

All I know from my corner of the war is that we've put some warheads on foreheads, and hopefully it's made a difference.

The need for sustainable access by naval aviators to runways and supplies that are near their area of operations is increasing. While the carrier ARA Veinticinco de Mayo is withdrawing to repair and resupply, her remaining squadron of A-4E Skyhawks are still in the fight. Much like the Argentine Skyhawks of the Falklands War, who launched 149 sorties from San Julian Airbase against the British forces on the Islas Malvinas despite the great distance ensuring that they had only two minutes of fuel on station.

With that heritage in mind, Naval Supply Command has performed a survey of disused airfields throughout the region and has identified a number of good candidates for rehabilitation and military usage. The first naval air station to be established is EAN Río Chicos, Argentina (to be given the temporary identifier SARJ). Only a few kilometers from the Rio Gallegos Airbase, and still within the confines of the city, this airfield is ripe for expansion. It would provide additional parking and runway space for friendly forces, while staying within the air defense envelope being created by NASAMS batteries and the ARA Intrépida. The existing naval ground crews at EAN Rio Gallegos shall transport their needed supplies and equipment and establish a naval air station. The facility will be available to friendly forces and its 1,095 m / 3,593 ft asphalt runway can be put to good use by short-field jets such as A-4E Skyhawks or MiG-29S Fulcrums.

As noted in the memo to our defense ministers, we will have the AT weapons dispersed amongst the infantry Regiments of the Chilean 5th BG. This should help slow the PLA armor if they decide to push hard in this direction. We are also going to withhold the use of the MQM drones until the Air Force or Navy requests their use. The Attrited NASAMS battery will also have arrived in Rio Turbio while the fresh one takes it's place in Rio Gallegos, so we will have that in place to the south to screen PLA cruise missiles and aircraft. The Chaparrals and their trucks are to utilize the highway route to Rio Turbio to travel at full civilian highway speeds, utilizing civilian heavy haul trailers for the Chaparrals themselves. It's an 18 hour drive, so we Anticipate the unit to arrive in Rio Turbio on the 8th after two days travel, and to be ready for deployment at 5th Div, 5th Log. Base "Magallanes" North of AO Bolt by the morning of the 9th.

Where the f*ck are we!?

When command said they had a mission for short field specialists I was expecting something... wetter. Rio Chico is going to be our home this sortie and its a tight fit. Our mission is to support a major attack on the isthmus. Our target is the 27th ARTY BN located roughly in the center of the isthmus approximately a mile south west of a warehousing facility and town surrounded by featureless desert.

We'll be attempting to attack through a thinner part of the enemy lines west of the target. After rendezvousing at HOLD, we'll wait for code words MATADOR and OLE signaling CAP and SEAD are on station and strikes may commence. We'll then head to IP where the first element will attempt to attack the target while the second element remains near IP providing cover for the attacking element and calling out SAM launches. Once the lead element has completely its strike it will return to IP and elements will switch rolls.

The terrain is very flat with no cover. Do not linger over the target. Attack whatever you can as quickly as you can and return to IP. Drop flares liberally. If time permits we will rearm at SWAC and come back for a second round, there is no need to conserve ammo and counter measures.

Avoid flying south from the target; the PLA still has significant SAM defenses in that area.

The frank truth is that we are in a pretty challenging position, given our technological limitations due to the equipment, aircraft, and such that these nations would have had available at the time, in comparison to what the Chinese military expeditionary force has available. Their air defense network in particular is insanely well equipped compared to ours.

Their Navy is also significantly more capable than ours, their anti-ship missiles can hit us from farther than we can hit them with ours, and they have a full carrier strike group heading our way with modern fighters versus our World War II vintage carriers that use Korean War vintage ground attack jets. The anti-air missile capabilities that their Navy has is also extremely dangerous, just as dangerous if not worse than their air defense network on the ground.

They also have at least 50% more troops available than we do, at least from what we've seen so far, and they also have long-range missile systems that we don't even have at all. And with the exception of a handful of F-16s and mirage 2000 fighter jets, the rest of our aircraft are mid to early Cold War era jets with all of the limited capabilities that come with that.

All of that being said, we have been able to utilize combined arms coordination between our Air Force, Army, and Navy much more effectively than the Chinese have, which has meant that our
forces have been able to punch above their weight. An army marches on its stomach (and available fuel/ammunition), so hitting lots of bridges and supply areas over the last month of in-world fighting has limited their ability to steamroll us.

We need more troops to get ready to deploy, and need more advanced equipment from our allies to have any change for the better. Until that happens, we've just got to keep up a slow grinding retreat and try to take advantage of any mistakes the Chinese forces make.

The logistical requirements of this war have been significant, particularly because several of the largest airports in the region were quickly conquered and occupied by Chinese forces early in the war. As a result, we have mostly been relying on five airbases: Puerto Natales, Rio Turbio, and El Calafate in the west, and Rio Gallegos and Santa Cruz in the east. However, the crowded nature of this situation has caused a variety of issues. At the smaller air bases there have been significant delays and congestion as too many aircraft vie for parking and runway space. In one notable event, an exhausted fuel handler collided with a parked F-16 and caused extensive damage, while another seven aircraft were coated in foam from the subsequent fire suppression.

At the same time, the larger airports like Rio Gallegos have become preferred targets for PLA cruise missile attacks - such as the one that killed Air Force commander Gen. Scholz. Pilots report erratic landings and takeoffs by squadrons competing for ramp space. Fighter craft have been damaged and crews have been lost due to this unsustainable state of affairs. With military intel indicating that PLA rocket forces on Tierra del Fuego are massing for additional assaults on our facilities, the importance of dispersing and protecting our forces is becoming paramount.

With the success of EAN Río Chico in mind, Naval Supply Command is now turning their attention to the north. Since our military transport aircraft are already over-utilized, a small passenger aircraft shall be chartered to relocate the evacuated ground crew of BAN Almirante Quijada (the now-occupied Naval Air Base at the Río Grande Airport in Tierra del Fuego), currently stationed at the largely empty Villa O'Higgins Airbase, to Cmte. Luis Piedrabuena near the airport of Santa Cruz, Argentina. The sailors shall establish a naval air station there that will offer our forces additional flexibility and reduce the risk of PLAN attacks by spacing out our assets.

Honestly, I could really use a good recap/catch-up of The Story So Far. I was following along closely at the beginning but as time goes on I've been checking in more and more sporadically, and at this point I couldn't say I'm really aware of the overall state of the war.

So that'd be my request here: please briefly recap the overall war and summarize how things stand now. (Or if there already is such a post, please link it and leave me to my un-observant shame.)

Prepare for my priapic projectile's exalted penetration

Hell yeah. CCIP's rendered rough at best, and a few days approaching or exceeding maximum windspeed to be able to even launch rocket artillery safely, much less hit something. Gonna have to exercise extra caution on launch and recovery of aircraft, including making sure you use your chocks so you don't get blown around after you park. Solidly in the zone where LGBs will struggle to stay on target (still fine for area targets, but less reliable vs a point vehicle)

Unfortunately without systems such as C-RAM and more advanced air defense systems like Patriot, there's really not much we can do about it. The 1.5 NASAMS we have can catch some but we'd need way more.

Vähä always fucks with windspeed, so you practice with 23kts ground (which DCS forces a 90kt wind at 1200ft) and then find the mission wind to be 7kts.

How big is the distance between the theoretical range of the CSS-7 and the distance from the front line to El Calafate and Rio Gallegos? If it isn't too much some planes could theoretically fly recon to try and locate the launchers, if other planes suppress the AA systems.

Yeah, that is the standard way it goes. We need to fire our meteorologist because I plan loadouts assuming the weather report is accurate and it isn’t at all.

But the second I go to dive bomb we will have 29 mph winds and it will miss even more horribly than usual.

My theory is the wind mysteriously dies to make takeoff and landing easier for the aircraft with dainty landing gear….

Unfortunately that system could likely hit El Calafete from Ushuaia which is deep behind a SAM network of many SA-11's, two or more S-300's, and several ships with navalized versions of those systems.
